  1. And how many people on this forum advocating that change are really Scout leaders? This forum is a great soapbox for those advocating change and having it look like it's coming from within Scouting. I personally doubt if the clamor for change approaches anywhere near the percentage, in the general Scouting community, that the casual reader of this forum is led to believe.
  2. Stosh, welcome to yesteryear! Rewarding them for actually doing something used to be what it was all about, not this current silliness! Knowing your boys, the effort that they put forth, and recognizing them for it is Job One for a Scoutmaster. And furthermore, what rule would you not be following? Good job!!!
  3. Very true that the buck has to stop somewhere but that wasn't the point. The point was the way that some posters to this forum immediately jump on the bandwagon condemning the Scoutmaster's actions, based strictly on what some aggrieved party puts forth as the situation. The consensus seems to be that the Scoutmasters sole purpose for being is to place roadblocks in little Johnny's path. Do we really believe that to be the case? I don't think so, but often times Beavah is the only one who comes forward and says, "Whoa, let's slow down here, let's use a little common sense and try to put the si
  4. Ed, don't be sorry. I guess I was too subtle but I was agreeing with you wholeheartedly!
  5. I personally see nothing wrong in a troop committee setting guidelines for Scouts holding a POR. It should be done by the troop committee, not the Scoutmaster, who could and should provide input in the establishment of the guidelines. Why not just the Scoutmaster just coming up with some rules? The guidelines established are setting the standards that all Scouts, current and future, should be judged byand involving the committee provides additional perspective. A change in Scoutmasters shouldn't necessarily change the long-held values of the Troop. A new Scoutmaster would know the expectations
  6. Well said, Eamonn! In most of us, our early life has shaped the individual values that we hold dear. Whether that be from religion, education, our parents and family life, or Scouting, a whole range of ideas have come together to form our core value system. I have reckoned the Scout Oath and Law, similar to the Golden Rule taught in my early life, to provide important guidance in a value system that really isn't that complex. If you do the right thing, which may not always be the popular thing, you'll be at peace with yourself! Now, if we could just stop worrying about how others think of
  7. Ed, you really want to live in yesteryear! In today's watered down BSA requirement world, merely breathing for a specific period of time in a POR seems to complete the requirement. Otherwise, why would unsatisfactory performance periods still count towards the goal. Remember, if they're not in jail or you haven't found sufficient cause to throw them out of your unit, you owe them the right to advance! Isn't it a shame that the Scout program has come to the point of being the embodiment of the Peter Principle in real life!! That is what we are continually told by frequent contributors to this f
  8. I think that WCS is on the right track. As a District Commissioner and a District Chairman, I signed off on cards for people working in different parts of the program (Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, District or Council) at the same time. There is nothing wrong with having multiple clocks running in different programs, just not two in the same program. They're doing the job, serving the time in a particular position and deserve the appropriate recognition. To me, "Dates of service used to earn this award cannot be used to earn another key or award." applies to someone trying to use the same ten
  9. Sorry that my perspective didn't come across the way I intended. If you look around, you will see many adult leaders in the programs long after their sons have bridged over or aged out. I know that I did it as both a Cubmaster and a Scoutmaster for at least two years after my sons were out of the pack and troop and have served in a variety of positions for another twenty years. I know many others who have done the same. That is what I meant by talking about being in it for all the boys, not just your child. With that perspective in mind, I don't think that it is unreasonable to think that the
  10. Perhaps the simplest way to correct the problem is to have the Webelos II den leaders understand that if all of the boys haven't bridged, their job isn't complete. If they buy in to this at the beginning of the year, the problem disappears. And yes, I understand that most of them are W2DL because their son is in the den. But if we say that we are in it for the boys, that removes that argument.
  11. Ditto to what nrp1488 said!! The "tomahawk toss" is a very popular activity. They also do it at Philmont.
  12. Look for the locator bar displayed below the Scouter Network logo, put your cursor on Forums and click. Locator > SCOUTER : Forums : New to the Forum? : Discuss This will take you to the listing for all of the available topics, pick the one that interests you, put your cursor on it, click and enjoy!!(This message has been edited by NE-IV-88-Beaver)
  13. Don't forget the rain cover!! You are planning on wearing it to Scouting events, aren't you!!
  14. My district has historically assigned Unit Commissioners to individual chartered organizations rather than by program. This has some benefits when there appears to be transitional problems between units. The UC should be knowledgeable about program differences and be able to help in resolving those problems, making for a happy chartered organization.
  15. If their intent was to clarify the requirement by changing the wording, I think that they missed the boat. Scout spirit requirements for Tenderfoot through First Class are now quite specific, with Eagle I'm not so sure. What was the intent behind deleting the term Scout Spirit when it is used on Tenderfoot through Life requirements? Wouldn't it make more sense to separate the requirements into subsets, separating the "Scout Spirit" and the letters? The Scoutmaster signs off on "Scout Spirit" based on his dealings with and observations of the Scout. He doesn't really have any idea wh
  16. Many are going ahead based on the requirements originally posted on January 12th.
  17. Hopefully the questions will focus on the positive impact of Scouting and not the 3 Gs!
  18. Yeah!! Welcome back! We've missed our forum fix for the last three days!
  19. BDPT00 has the right answer. Acknowledge the sign of respect given by the Scout by standing up and returning the salute! BSA has not adopted military protocol, to the best of my knowledge, so it doesn't come into play.
  20. From page 20 of the new Boy Scout Handbook: "The Scout Salute is a form of greeting that also shows respect. Use it to salute the flag of the United States of America. You may also salute other Scouts and Scout leaders." Sounds like the young man knew exactly what he was talking about!
  21. According to the Advancement Committee Policies and Procedures: "The candidate's unit leader introduces him to the members of the board of review. The unit leader may remain in the room, but does not participate in the board of review. The unit leader may be called on to clarify a point in question. In no case should a relative or guardian of the candidate attend the review, even as a unit leader." ....."After the review, the candidate and his unit leader leave the room while the board members discuss the acceptability of the candidate as an Eagle Scout." That clearly outlines the re
  22. But getting back to OGE's original question, yes the coverage is over the top! Over sixteen solid hours of local storm coverage on all four major networks suspending all network programming yesterday is way over the top! After you tell everyone to stay in, don't drive, pace yourself if shoveling, and what's closed, why do you have to repeat it ad nauseum? Two minute news spots during the day with important updates on the screen crawler should give us all the news that we really need. Wouldn't it make more sense to have some upbeat programming interspersed during the day to lift people's s
