Hi Bob, I think an infusion of the Timeless Values of Scouting into some neighborhoods could be a big, no huge, instrument of change for the better. Does your Council include any cities over 100,000 with a predominately minority part of town? Does your District have a troop or troops in that area of town? Is your Council trying? What are they doing? If getting good grades is looked down upon, how are you going to sell the neckerchief and knee socks? P

WWI was the first modern war and the last of the ancient wars. Hundreds if not thousands of miles of trenches and bunkers, troops all hunkered down with no where to go. Machine guns were used for the first time in large numbers. Tanks made their debut. Poison Gas. The huge loss of life was caused by officers using tactics from previous wars to fight the current one. So, we had horse cavalry charging machine guns. Infantry frontal assaults against machine guns, earthworks, and barbed wire. British officers must have studied Pickett's charge at Gettysburg and thought it was the way carry the German lines. But what about those machine guns? Mowed down like grass. At Passchendaele, the British just kept sending wave after wave after wave right into the guns. Hurray for the ANZACs!!! None Braver!

Neil, Never claimed to be the smartest guy around (I re-enlisted twice), but the manner in which you described your attorney friends actions, left me to believe he was to pay only for people of color to attend Wood Badge. Take a look again at how you worded that sentence. Anyway, I'm not really all that bothered by any of that. I absolutely believe that Scouting in the black community could be, would be, should be a Godsend and more power to this guy. But if this was worded the opposite way, if the shoe was on the other foot, there would be a hue and cry so loud across the internet that bandwidth would snap and fiber optics would shake. c'mon Uncle, This ain't about advancing scouting for southpaws. It's about picking recipients of scholarship dough based on nothing but Race. Are there no poor whites in Boston who could benfit the community and scouting by attending Wood Badge? Did this attorney never have a poor white Bostonian as a SM, ASM, Camp Staffer, or Merit Badge Counselor? To go public with an announcement that he will pay only for people of color is racist and is wrong. The scholarship should go to any needy Scouter let say serving in the District covering the D Street area.

I disagree with racism. This is racism. When he lays on a race requirement for Wood Badge Scholarship it is wrong. To make scholarships available to his council, fine. To his district, fine. To Scoutreach, fine. To make it available only to blacks, that's wrong wrong wrong. C'mon, you know this ain't right.

This summer, I am paying for other people's kids to go to: 2 NRA Rifle Shooting Camps, 1 kid to Council JLT, and 1 Summer Camp. I never thought to lay on a requirement that these kids be White, Protestant kids of Celtic, Pict, and Saxon descent. Why wouldn't this rich lawyer lend a hand to all the poor kids who need a hand? Sniff, Sniff, oooooohh fails the smell test.

Hi, The uniform flexibility is for Venturing Crews designing a Crew uniform without using the Spruce Green Shirt. In a Ship there is no flexibility. The uniform is what it is. Whites, Blues, and work. The only flexibility is whether you add a distinctive ship's patch. The Sea Scout uniform is what it is.

I am amazed by the amount of ink wasted by people who are highly hacked off by people flying little flags off of their SUVs. VFW allows atheists. Merlyn can join my VFW Post anytime. He would just have to have served with Uncle in a combat zone. But come to think of it, Chaplain Charlie was a pretty popular fellow, back when it was raining SCUDS, and I never met an atheist in any foxhole I happened to dive into. The first game at Soldier Field after 9/11 they had a flag that covered most of the field held by dozens of boots from Great Lakes. It had to be held horizontally. I'm sure all those squid officers were aware of the flag code and interpretted it for a respectful display. Not a dry eye in the place.
