I agree with alot of what Eagle92 has posted. As to Beavah's original post I have personally thought the Boy Scout program has been too Cubbish for too long. As a Scout, we did things that I thought were for adults (building and climbing up a 20 foot tower, for example). Today I see kids who think lashing is too hard. I have noticed that summer camp programs have been watered down. Even todays Scouting songs to me are aimed at 10 year olds and under. Give the older boys a program designed for their age and they will stay.

E, try some black Thor-Lo walking socks. I used them when I needed black socks for work and the wife uses them now. They last for years before they wear out.

Ditto what le Voy said. The Katahdin Area Council operates the former Maine National High Adventure Base. I would'nt recommend WWR on many of Maines rivers without a guide and in some cases the State of Maine requires licensed guides and river permits. Now matter how experienced they are, some hammerheads get killed every year on Maine waters.

A SCOUT IS THRIFTY: A Scout works to pay his own way and to help others. He saves for unseen needs. He protects and conserves natural resources. He carefully uses time and property.

Liz, why should you fork over the cash when your Scout should earn the money himself, purchase the uniform himself, and do his own sewing? The first two could go hand-in-hand with the earning of the Eagle required Personal Management merit badge. We don't teach our children when we do for them all the time.

Try looking on MacScouter. Lots of resources there for the Scouting program. Personally, I like the old songs.

Don't forget closed-cell foam sleeping pads or other quality pad to insulate you from the cold ground. In addition to the foam pad I like to use folded up wool blankets (Army surplus) between me and the foam pad. A little extra cushioning and a whole lotta warmth. Avoid cotton clothing, especially socks.

Dear 2X4: Not bad but your Article 2 would inhibit my right to choose who my elected officials are. Term Limits were proposed a few years back and were defeated. That is too much Governmental control. Article 10 sounds good except foreign students have more money than American students to attend U.S. institutions of higher learning. The loss of foreign $ would mean a doubling of tuition for your children. As for Article 3, I am vehemently opposed to any kind of tax. Although a necessary evil, New Hampshire, the "Live Free or Die" state, enjoys NO sales or state income tax.

I know of two camps in the mountains of NC, Bob Hardin in Saluda and Daniel Boone in Waynesville. I have never been to either but lived there for two years and the temp in the mountains is much better than in the Piedmont or other lower areas.

Thanks for bumping this John. When I was an SPL, our SM was a Lt. Colonel, I think, and we camped at the ANGB bivouac site. At night we played capture the flag, and found some great holes to hide in. The SM pointed out the next day those "holes" were actually the latrine pits!

I think the Eureka Timberline tent is perfect for Scouting. Fairly tough, and priced well. I have a 19 year old Eureka tent. The Timberline may be a little cramped, but two is a great number for Scouts per tent. Bigger crowd=less sleep. As for a tarp, whatever happened to the old lightweight Nylon fly? Campmor has one (10x10) for $39.99 that weighs 2#, but that seems too small for a patrol fly.

The troop of my youth (TOMY) merged with the other troop in town in the mid-90's. A town of 9,000 people could no longer support two units. They combined the numerals so Troops 25 and 26 became 256. The charter from the TOMY, the oldest continously registered troop in the council (1912) was used for recharter with the new number. But do what your guys want and have fun. The most important thing is the boys have a troop to call their own.

I'm with BW. I keep my uniform as spartan as possible. The UG says "Members should make every effort to keep their uniforms neat and uncluttered."
