  1. Steve, thanks for posting that link and for doing the reading. I just clicked on it and took time to listen on my way out to Christmas dinner. Sort of made my Christmas.
  2. Actually, it's: NO one expects the Spanish Inquisition!
  3. Would you care for a lovely breakfast? Fine, as long as we leave the Spanish Inquisition out of it.
  4. I believe this discussion has reached the point where, in an old Monty Python sketch, the British colonel would break it up, saying, "This is getting silly." John Cleese would then say, "And now for something completely different."
  5. Oh well, my doctor wants me to lose 30 pounds anyway. Actually, surprisingly, I'm within the guidelines, but he still wants me to lose the 30.
  6. I believe it would be 1948 or 1949. The 1948 Handbook was the first to state the 11 year old requirement. I don't have the first printing, so it may have said 12, which is why I'm not sure about the date.
  7. Sarge: What I hear you saying is that you don't believe in the Judeo-Christian God, dispensing justice, mercy and punishment. If it's any help to you, Buddhists believe that the Universe is all one thing: people, dogs, flowers, water, planets. We don't necessarily believe that there is a universal intelligence sort of guiding everything, but many of us do and it isn't separate from us. I'm not proselytizing for Buddhism here, but just suggesting that there are other ways of conceiving of a supreme being/higher power. I won't get into karma, except to say it takes the concept of mercy pretty much out of it by teaching that what goes around comes around. A lot of Unitarian Universalists believe something like that as well.
  8. See the discussion thread at: http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=220051 Site was hacked.
  9. Haven't read it, but I just put it on my library hold list.
  10. If God had intended people to go outside when the temperature is below 70*, He would never have given us thermometers and weatherpersons. Just a personal view. That said, I have two dogs that have to go out, weather notwithstanding. When it's cold (as defined above), I break out my old military fieldgear. The lower the temp, the shorter the walk.
  11. several people have reported that they have received the staff patch, but have NOT yet been selected. Yeah, but what I was saying is, I think they will be selected. I guess National could be on autopilot, but I'd rather think not.
  12. SMT224: This is just my take, but it seems unlikely they would be sending patches to people who will not be selected. Of course, some will drop out due to health, job, economic or other circumstances and should not wear their patch after that. I would think the "selectors" are just delaying formal appointment pending their decisions about assignment. Again, just a hunch. I would wear the patch (if I could, LOL) until somebody tells me I've be non-selected. It does seem like kind of an odd situation.
  13. Yeah, I could wear Venturing uniform, but I don't own one of those, either. I suppose I could get those for the Jambo, but, if I can't wear Sea Scout stuff, I'd just as soon wear Boy Scout. Kind of interesting, I'm not registered in Sea Scouting at all. I'm a commissioner and member of the District Committee. There is no registered position in this council for Sea Scout Vice Commodore, or any other SS position not directly unit related. This is true of other commodores in councils I know of.
  14. I thought my closet had magical properties. Apparently not. I've had them in several closets and the same thing happened.
  15. Right on Beavah. And don't forget the common sense side of things.
  16. My patch arrived today. It's the Staff variety. Of course, I can't wear it on my Sea Scout uniform, and don't plan to buy any new BSA uniforms (old ones apparently shrunk in storage) until it's entirely clear what they will want us to wear at the Jambo.
  17. Yeah, but it's all going to fall into the sea anyway.
  18. Got a Letter of Appointment, assigned to a position, paid my hundred bucks, but haven't got a patch yet.
  19. How many Councils did you research? At this point, probably 12-15. I'd have to count books to be sure. I'm still working on them as I can find their books. (and afford them)
  20. emb: Thanks for your review. I had already decided I wasn't gonna spend that kind of money (I could buy 4-5 council histories for that ) until I'd seen one or heard from someone about it.
  21. That's a great article. Thanks for posting.
  22. My recent research of council histories has not turned up any examples of Scout-built troop cabins still in use after that long. I have a feeling that some Scout camps may have buildings on them that were built by Scout labor that are still in use. Camp Meriwether in Columbia Pacific Council would be one such suspect. In the twenties and thirties, a lot of councils hired Scouts to work in construction building their camps. I wouldn't be surprised to find some still around, but can't point to any specifically.
