  1. 14 pages and nobody has said it yet. Why do I always have to be the one to put green bamboo sections in the fire? They're turning up the heat slowly: 2018: (Effective October 1, 2018) Two registered adult leaders 21 years of age or over are required at all Scouting activities, including meetings. 2020, after going co-ed: (Effective October 1, 2020) Two registered adult chaperones 21 years of age or over are required at all Scouting activities, including meetings.
  2. I did skip a few rocks to cross that creek. Here's why I think that National chose to go co-ed instead of Girl Guides: Irving would definitely like to have more paying volunteers, and youth memberships. But I don't think that a parallel organization would accomplish that. 1- Many existing female BSA volunteers would be siphoned off into the new program. A good number of women that wanted to work with BSA are already members. 2- Many new girl organizations may fail to reach the critical mass for their continued existence, and fold. How embarrassing! Safer to augment existin
  3. When you have patrol equality (not the same winners all the time) it's great. When one patrol started winning more often than not, I was gratified to see them slipping some cookies to the losers who competed well. Then we changed the competitions to something the matched the losing patrol's skill set.
  4. Neckerchiefs were good utilitarian accessories in my day. Once you learned to be aware of slide slippage, the wad of cloth was always useful. But I really didn't appreciate the necker concept until I was in the military. We wore OD green triangular bandages as 'drive on rags'. Worn backwards, bandit style, a drive on rag was critical to protect your face from back-blasted sand when firing large weapons. Tying back a branch from an ambush sight-line, cleaning optics, smoke mask, earmuffs, blindfold, bandage and occasional snot-rag... I became so accustomed to having a drive on rag in
  5. I would hypothesize that National's goal was financial; how do we maximize our existing base of free volunteer labor in order to protect our salaries? Starting another program with a new volunteer base would not have yielded the same return. Although one would think that Girl Guides would have served the girls better and protected several key features of 'boy only' development.
  6. Matt, I'm sorry to disappoint, but I was a good quiet kid. When I was young (Eagled in '67) corporal punishment was expected and encouraged. My dad's woven Army belt would plow out strips of flesh. The worst I ever remember was being given a pocketknife to go out back and cut a switch. Too small, and I'd be sent back for another switch after the first one wore out. Too large? Just damn! Although I was part of a crew that floated our DE's VW Beetle on Thunder Lake atop two war canoes (Flint River Council), I never got caught. In college I was a master prankster. (Launching firew
  7. Boys respond to instant gratification. Delayed reward that comes as the result of planning and working towards a goal, well, that's work. A JTE patch with multiple years on your shoulder is rewarding, but it's not really fun. A large package of Oreo cookies won in a patrol competition? Now that's fun!!
  8. In our troop we nickname them 'Will' and send them down range for archery and rifle. "Ready on the firing line? Fire at Will!"
  9. TT: It is sad to see another reasonable voice tire of fighting the distortions. God speed, good scouting (if you so choose), and good fishing! Your avatar modification is priceless. Thanks for all your time. JoeBob
  10. Topic: Putting the pieces together, page 4: Bearess said: "Well, my son’s Troop (in a rural but very liberal state) already has mixed patrols. They currently have six girls, out of a troop of thirty. " Did you forget?
  11. A clarification brought about after the fact by bad publicity. However alcohol was allowed (for leaders?) in prior WSJs on foreign soil. Not a falsehood on the part of Trail Life.
  12. Taurus Excretus. What falsehoods? Be specific. Shades of meaning and innuendo (like in the Snopes article) don't count. Trail Life did not write the WOSM rules for WSJ. Exposing those rules to light is not telling a lie. Look at how many active scouters on this board had no idea that condoms were to be distributed and advertised: "Heads of contingent must be informed in advance and made aware of their responsibility in communicating this policy to their participants, unit leaders, and IST in an appropriate way." For a well written conservative point of view: https://www
  13. What law? I don't think such a law exists. https://www.ageofconsent.net/states/west-virginia
  14. Who is going to start the GoFundMe account for bailing out WOSM personnel who violate West Virginia law by giving condoms to underage children?
  15. I'm still wondering what landmine we triggered in the other topic.
  16. I want clearance, Clarence! Or at least clarity. West Virginia age of consent is 16. Minimum age for WSJ attendance is 14. Giving condoms to 14 & 15 year old kids should be a concern. What are the reporting requirements? "Hey Scout Mom; you should be proud! Your son asked for 12 condoms over 7 days, and I'm pretty sure that there wasn't a water balloon fight."
  17. http://www.wnd.com/2018/05/condoms-required-at-scouts-24th-world-jamboree/ It's been a long conversation with the moderators.
  18. FormerProfessional: Welcome to the forum?
  19. This old fart is just getting used to the new features. But I really like the feedback options and the 'recent posts' area. I'm able to stay current with much less hunting around. (Fewer CPU cycles on your end.) Now if I can figure out how to quote multiple selections from different pages, I'll become a verbal warrior from Hades. Thank you. JoeBob
  20. @Mashmaster, I feel your pain. I had to stop going to troop meetings. Although having boys tell me that they missed me and would I come back was gratifying, I knew that it was undermining their respect for the new SM. A bit of MBC work is my only involvement now. If I thought for a minute that district would actually use me for outdoor work and woods-skills teaching, I might violate my maxim about 'Unit level Scouting'. I obviously miss it, or I wouldn't drop by this forum to stir up trouble.
  21. Methinks you insult trees.
  22. I'm wondering how large the National budget was in 1970. Not just the highest paid execs, but the whole bloody thing. Take the dollars spent by national, adjust for inflation, and divide by the membership for that year. How would that compare to today?
