I took 115 of my Cubbies to the Yorktown for $115 a head. Buses from ATL, all food, two nights bunking on the boat. EVERYBODY will remember that trip. (Especially the Cub who broke his collarbone rolling out his 3rd level bunk woke up all the women in the officers quarters one deck below.) There are activities and scavenger hunts that can be used for patrol competitions.

Photobucket 'upgraded' their system to make it more friendly to social media. I hate the upgrade. I will not be renewing my Photobucket Pro account when it expires.

Can't start a topic, so would someone please move this out? Title: Survival EQ in a Hiking Staff Gonna build a staff with some hidden extras. Basic Concept: Permanently store small items that could aid in a survival situation Most items will be against the shaft wrapped under 12 to 16 inches of paracord. My list: Fish hooks, fishing line, snare wire survival blanket fire striker survival whistle (the thin flat kind) exacto blade I'm thinking of wrapping this stuff tight under the handle and forgetting about it. (I'm old. It's gonna be forgotten anyway...) I may need to carve some relief into the handle to accommodate some items and to keep the handle wrap smooth. The metal items will need to be rust proof (Stainless fish hooks, copper wire) and I'm thinking of painting the blade with a few coats of urethane. Will that keep it from rusting until it's needed? Or will painting it totally ruin the edge? Can you recommend a stainless blade that is thin enough to wrap under a grip, and cheap? Might recess a compass into the wood, but I don't want to weaken the staff. What else should I consider putting under the grip wrap? If this turns out well, the boys can make one for themselves. Should I allow them to make survival tomahawks instead of staves? http://www.hatchetsandaxes.com/bsa_scout_camp_tomahawks

Speed reading can be dangerous: what kind of scouting presentation (other than Astronomy MB) includes a metal asteroid? Really I'm just checking back into the forum to see if traffic has resumed. I would say that I've missed y'all; but Basement would hold it against me in the future.

Debugging and Suggestions for new SCOUTER.com
JoeBob replied to SCOUTER-Terry's topic in Forum Support & Announcements
Just discovered the individual page number buttons on the bottom of each page of the 'Not Quite Right in the Head' topic. They work really well for moving up and back through eight pages! Thanks! -
Go to the home page for a particular forum. ie - 'Issues and Politics'. On the top of main page there's a button : '+ New Topic' You take it from there. ;^)

" i mean, after all we are in BSA not each pack/troop looking after each pack/troops interests. " I learned long ago that it's foolish to argue with a bullet, so please allow me to respectfully disagree. Many of us are specifically looking after our troops/packs IN SPITE of national BSA. If you are really placing your unit's interests (and your boy's interests) behind national's interests, there is a job for you at the district or council level...

Not Quite Right in the Head - Our Responsibilities?
JoeBob replied to JoeBob's topic in Working with Kids
Sorry, Krampus. I barely have enough time to meet with the PLC, coach my SPL through planning troop meetings, report to the committee, assign duties to my ASMs (and follow up to be sure they're okay), hold SMCs for every scout when requested, keep all my BSA required training current, occasionally visit roundtable, go on a weekend long trip once a month and a week long Summer camp every year, teach a subject every now and then, check on my boy, take care of my personal gear and uniform, and bathe. Did I mention that I have a wife who still tolerates my presence and other family members? And a full time job? I have to prioritize my time. Seeking out specialized training to deal with one bad apple is not even on the bottom of the list. If 'Surly Scout' (not diagnosed with anything that we're informed of) continues to add unwanted drama to troop activities it is my responsibility to: 1- Inform Surly Scout and parent that continued defiant behavior will result in his removal. 2- Be specific about what constitutes defiant behavior. ( Not participating in any group activities, refusal to follow reasonable instructions, aggression, etc.) 3- Remove Surly Scout from the troop for the good of the rest of the group. Wearing the uniform means that sometimes you have to make tough decisions. -

Debugging and Suggestions for new SCOUTER.com
JoeBob replied to SCOUTER-Terry's topic in Forum Support & Announcements
1- Thank you, thank you for volunteering time to help us unappreciative old fogies enjoy this forum. 2- When moving to the next page on a Droid, a- There were 'Next Page' and page numbers to click on on the bottoms of each screen after the 15th post. I'm not seeing them on Chrome. b- If I used the 'Next Page' buttons, I always came up at the bottoms of the next page, and had to scroll to the top (Sometimes that was a lot of finger swiping) to read on. I really liked the way the old forum moved form the bottom of one page to the top of the next. NOT COMPLAINING! Just feedback. 3- Thanks to my other forum buddies for adjustment tips. Especially the '40 topics' per page tip. 4- Instead of being offered "Activity in the last 24 hours"? Could we make it "Activity in the last Week"? -
Connecting the Dots: Guns, Gays and Obamacare
JoeBob replied to DigitalScout's topic in Issues & Politics
I think the downfall of the country will be / has been electronic media. Talk about something the founders never foresaw! When the prevalent information providers take one side consistently, truth has a hard time. And you can't vote commentators out of office! -
Connecting the Dots: Guns, Gays and Obamacare
JoeBob replied to DigitalScout's topic in Issues & Politics
Shucks; the thread title made me think it was going to be a marksmanship challenge. I see where you're coming from, DigitalScout. Lemme add a few peculiarities: The number of unemployed is at a record high. So the Prez disbands his 'Jobs Panel'. Nobody got fired for Benghazi. GDP is negative, but the market is flirting with a record high. - (Or is the market just pre-adjusting for inflation, since the Fed is still pumping?) The Republican Party can't decide whether to go Right or Center. (Usually a good way pile-up in the median...) There is just too much 'stuff' happening to stay excited about any one or two issues. -
Sorry men; never been to a Gun Show. Don't like crowds. A CCW serves in place of a BGC in my state. I just knew that that the "40% of sales without a BGC" was based on phone interviews of purchases that took place before BGCs were a legal requirement of legitimate retailers. Extreme cherry picking of data.
-
Beavah, I appreciate your open-mindedness. But you sorta answered your own question, didn't you? What would be really interesting to know is the percentage of criminals who buy their guns from legitimate sources. Another way to look at it: how many crimes (other than cases of self-defense gone wrong) are committed with a gun purchased legally by the person who originally bought that gun and submitted to a BGC? Dynamics to consider: 1- Only the most stupid crooks would consider potentially turning themselves in by submitting to a BGC. 2- Stolen TVs are cheaper than legitimate retail. How does that apply to the cost of street guns versus retail prices? If you're a crook, is it not cheaper to buy a stolen (no BGC) gun? So, would universal BGCs reduce crime? Nope. It would only generate more paperwork for people who are already planning to obey the law. BTW: There was never a ban on research, just a ban on federally funded research, specifically health related organizations that have little business researching policy issues. If there was any potential for a vaccine against high speed lead, maybe CDC research would be relevant.
-
Beavah, that 40% number is misleading and incorrect. "Results of a nationally representative telephone survey (1994) on private ownership and use of firearms by American adults. The survey provides the most complete data available on the private stock of firearms in the United States." Can you get us a reference for 40% gun sales w/o BG check since background checks became the law? ie: post Brady Bill? (Feb 28, 1994.) It's actually sorta interesting that 60% of gun purchases did have a background check before...

He was denied an SMC. (Any written rule rule about?) Perhaps the SM was trying to get him in shape for his BOR? Much better to be quietly turned back early, and have a chance o correct a problem than to suffer the embarrassment of a BOR rejection. It's actually good that your SM is taking pride in the scouts he sends up. That said, I once harassed a scout who got his BOR for 2nd Class and 1st Class on the same night. I had him convinced that he wasn't going to get 1st Class because he didn't have his 2nd Class badge sewn on for his First Class BOR that was ten minutes later. I never said I was a nice person.
-
Dean, I'm with you as far as you go. I'd like to add discussion about the media self-regulating to NOT publish the names and pictures of shooters who think that they will be made famous if they kill enough people in their suicidal blaze of glory. Is there enough evidence to convince news outlets that self-glorification was at least partially to blame for heinous acts?
-
Beavah for Chief Scout Exec! In case I was too subtle, I endorse all three suggestions above. The shorter the chain of command, the better information flow up and down.
-
I'm of two minds. Regarding the classroom merit badges, I'm all for once and done. Get it checked off and forget it. "You'll never use that stuff in real life anyway." But I understand the National BSA thought in requiring exposure to those concepts, once. But the physical skills that make a Boy Scout a Boy Scout, I am going to retest, re-teach, and reinforce. If national thinks that is bad, I look forward to being fired! Re-testing does not hurt the boys. Ignorance and over-confidence hurts the boys.(This message has been edited by JoeBob)
-
TwoCub, Excellent post! I guess Iv'e been too accepting of the National influence. I want my boys to know this stuff. National wants to keep numbers up, and believes that churning out Eagles is the key for future numbers. I think they're just diluting Eagle to the point of killing Scouting.
-
Follow the money: Jambo is having trouble convincing volunteers to pay for the chance to work for them? I wonder why? Session One for over 26 costs $850. And I may be required to come a week early for training. Never been. Never going. (I'm not the fool my Mama raised...)

Hey Tampa, I'm fairly certain that the NRA would be all for an intelligence test being a prerequisite for owning firearms. But I'm equally certain that it would never become law. The liberals would point out that they were being discriminated against.
-
Basement, I think Schiff was pointing out that your Glock is a: "semiautomatic weapon with detachable magazine". Which NRA publication did you ask for?

Mea culpa, mea culpa! I think the original topic was: HANG THE BANKERS! Can we use the small intestines of lawyers to string 'em up? But thanks to all for clarifying the FDIC limits thingie.
