  1. Dorling Kindersly is a division of Pearson, which is a British company. Green Bar Bill was a BS of America guy. If he hadn't written the Biography of BP, he probably wouldn't have made it to the DK book at all. Let's just all promote the memory of Green Bar Bill. (This message has been edited by Jay K)

    Spoof Patches

I had an "Agitator" patch that I wore in place of the "Trained" patch on one of my 4 Uniform shirts. I was at National Camping School in 2006, and some other students asked me about it. I said "It represents a trail of suffering and tears that led me here, seeking affirmation." On the last morning, our class met at 0600 for a mandatory meeting. It was an affirmation ceremony! Imagine my surprise! I moved the Agitator patch to my patch vest, which is really the best place for spoof patches.
  4. 'appy bank 'oliday, and fhird day o' Christmas! Happy New Year!
  5. I never met Bill Hillcourt or have anything that he autographed, BUT every copy of Boy's Life, I read the Green Bar Bill article first.
  6. Ouch! I never understand why Adults in Scouting can't get the principle of Friendly, Curteous, Kind. When I train new adult leaders, I look them in the eye, and say "You will run into someone with whom you do not get along. It WILL happen. Don't QUIT. Work around them, or with them or without them." I'll be interested to hear about the Christmas parade. Rejoice! She's promised NOT to participate. You can really enjoy the boys.
  7. There is a Troop in our town that "doesn't do OA." So, when anyone asks me why our Troop is better than theirs,as far as joining us instead of them, I say "They don't do OA and we do." Then I expand on the service theme of OA. So, I don't want them to do "OA."
  8. When my children started asking me if Santa Claus was real, I told them that there was a real guy who became known as Saint Nicholas, and he really gave gifts to the poor, and that the legend grew from there and became the silly Santa Claus thing. So, I let them down gently. I have told a lot of people that, and I've gotten feedback that it's a good way to do it. So, I don't know. Try it! I read a treatise that said: There was a jewish feast day on December 25th that was a prophetic place holder for Jesus' birth, and that the idea that shepherds only took their flocks out spring/summer/
  9. As a veteran Trainer, I like Slide Shows in Power point. When the class yells "Death by Power Point!" I laugh along with them. If it's one that has too many slides, I put notes in some that say "Skip this slide." For example, people who are going to serve on a troop BoR in 1 hour don't need the Eagle slides or the ones about how a Scout gets to the Bor. It's tailored to the expected audience. I just use the slides for the bullet points; I expound on them, and you don't even have to hit all the points on a slide if you don't want to. Some of those slides have too many points, too, but its a
  10. And what if you DO eat the dues, and then experience a flood of transfers "You did it for Family X." Don't set a precedent. Yipes!
  11. I'd tell them I'd pro-rate the dues, I'm sorry, we have no record of what you did in the other unit, (and don't want one.) so sorry, We can't eat your dues, very sorry. Contacting thier Charter Organisatin Representative is probably the only resort. Anybody can come to me and say "the other unit blah balh balh," but "Sorry, sorry, that isn't my problem." (You are!)
  12. My Dad, the Scoutmaster, wanted all the Scouts to get Cooking Merit Badge. His Cooking Merit Badge classes were legendary. He also wanted them to sew their own patches. He wanted them to be able to cook and sew while they were bachelors. (This was in the quaint olden days.) Ahh, my Dad. I wish he was still around to talk to. I do a lot of stuff in my Troop that he did in his troop.
  13. Communication MB (Eagle required) should cover your Public Speaking idea. There is also a Public Speaking MB. I hve a Scout working on that. He was planning to do a speech at school, and he wanted to borrow my CPR dummy (the "stiff!") He said "Too bad i already have Communication Merit Badge!" I said "Do Public Speaking MB." Jay (Communication MB Counselor.)
  14. I was reading my son's Scout handbook. I found a paragraph that says the Scoutmaster will request a Board of review for the Scout! I've been a Scoutmaster since 2007, and I never knew that. We've been having the Scout contact the CC. Thanks, that's a fun slide show. Jay
  15. At our Troop meeting last evening, I was talking about Welding MB, and a Dad of a Scout said he has a welder and will sign up to be a Counselor!! Moosetheitalianblacksmith, you were prophetic!
  16. I had trouble like, but not as bad as, BasementDweller's. It was the CD who came through for me. He's a great guy. I still see him often. So, the idea of wondering if the CD will come through, is probably a valid one. I don't seek glory in my troop, but my Scouts are genuinely proud of my accomplishments, as I am in theirs. They knew I went to Wood Badge, and that I had goals. They checked on my progress from time to time. It was special to me, because I take an interest in them, and it was touching and fun to have them take an interest in me. I saw it as a sign of maturation; Scouts so
  17. I DID see "Scout" Blue jeans (non-uniform) on the ScoutStuff web site.
  18. I was joking about saving up towards $35 for 5 months, but I am planning to do it! :~)
  19. Berets are cool. Summer: Wet it down. Spring, Fall: Perfect! Winter: Pull one side down over your ear, and the droop side down over the other ear. I wear Swix ear muffs under it sometimes. I have a black one that a guy captured for me in Iraq. I put a BSA hat pin on it. I have a beautiful blue U.N. one. I have an FSB (the follow on to the KGB) border guard one. I have a green one that I put a Venture patch on. I have a green "Scouts Canada" one. I have a classic red official BSA one, and I have an old one with a Star rank pin and a BSA oval patch that I got in 1966. One f
  20. I've read a little bit about Baden- Powell's ideas about education, and I read up on Montessori, and I think the founders of Montesorri read BP's stuff, too. The only problem I could dream up is: They might think Scouts is too much like School.
  21. Yes! I Did! I thought it was cool. I'm going to start saving up to buy a memebership, so I'll probably get one in April, 2012.
  22. My Wood badge beads, my knots, my Camp School patch, my award belt buckles and my medals, are just so much junk next to my Eagle Mentor pins. I wear them on my collar points. I only have four uniform shirts; I need to think up another spot. What I usually see is them lined up right above somebody's left uniform shirt pocket.
  23. Troop Guide and Ticket Counselor are two different people? And you never met the ticket counselor? That seems very strange, but again points out how oofed up your course was.
  24. I was sitting in Fifth Grade one day, when the teacher came in and said "The Supreme Court has said that we can't pray in school anymore." It wasn't like we prayed all the time, but we did on occasion. I remember thinking "That's stupid." I STILL think so.
