  2. I put in un-told countless hours... but I am also a bit weird ... I once read something a mailing list or one of the boards about its only "1 hour per week per boy" and I like this version better... it is more accurate ... lol ok maybe not but close enough ..... 3. Did they every show up? Were they found? Am I missing something ... confused look ... what happened ... way i read the article they had not been located ... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders improve Scouting on resource at a time
  4. Wow, that is great I may copy that down and use it when I help teach training. What a thought to ponder ... Also remember "A hero is just someone who is the right place at the right time that does something good for someone else. A hero is not someone who goes looking for the right moment or for bragging rights." Even by this definition I think what we do as Scout Leaders qualifies us as hero''s in its own way. 5. The cub scout locked door one is great and cute Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders improve Scouting on resource at a time
  6. Chippewa29 me salutes (Scout Salute) for being a great leader... Yes miracles do happen, and I was hoping others may share there''s with us too.
  7. The Troop I made eagle in had its own dome tents that lasted us for about 3 years. The troop I am now a leader in also has its own dome tents (coleman) and they have lasted two years so far. I would suggest a Troop wondering if they should have there own tents take a piece of paper and fold it in half ... and then on one half list the pros and on the other side cons and then talk about which option is better for you in your case... Hope my wacky 2 cents was of help... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders improve Scouting one resource at a time.
  8. By count there seems to be 3 answers... 1) Yes I can live without TV!!! 2) (like me) yes I can live without tv, but internet no way 3) No tv are you nuts!!! Did I miss any? Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders improve Scouting one resource at a time.
  9. Gonzo the tree and sled were undamaged. Another case we had for a cell phone was coming back from summer camp on year. We had to go across a dam, but there was an accident, getting through the lake dam area should of taken 45 mins but took over 3 hours, nearly doubling our return trip time. Before leaving for summer camp we asked on of the parents to be a single point of contact. We called this person to let them know we got to camp fine and they in turn called the parents. Then on trip back when stuck on the bridge I again called this person and told them of the problem, and that person do to seeing it on news told us what is up. They then of course called parents and told them we would be late and would call again when we were about 45 mins out - which we did. We got back to the meeting location hours late, but in one piece. All the parents were happy and in some cases more agreeable then normal. (ok we did have one miss hap there were no bathrooms and a straight up mountain on one side and a cliff on the other ... so as time passed and blatters filled a few bottles were filled and one smelly accident ....) Ok now that I had my fun grossing u out ill run off.... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  10. Kind of a side thought of interest ... I heard this once out of a audio book I was listening I believe.. anyway that something like 75% of all law suites occur in the USA and like 85% of all lawyers are in the USA ... maybe some one with more time them me and knows a few good places can try and find the real numbers... if not no big deal its just kind of a curiosity stat. My Wacky 2 cents Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  11. We do not allow electronics on campouts either. Adults have them for emergencies, etc. The one time I know of we needed a cell phone when we had scout sleding and one ran into a tree, the cell was out of range. We observed the kid for about 30 mins and then it was decided the he would be taken off the mountain. Once they were in cell range they called the kids parents, meet up and the parents took kid to ER. Locally no major damage, kid spent 36 hours in hospital do to concussion and slight brain bruising. Also luckily kids mother was very involved in the Troop and was very understanding and was not upset. Ok I got off topic with that example... our Troop asks they don''t bring them thats my answer My Wacky 2 cents Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  12. TV - yes, no doubt I only watch at most a 2-4 hours a week anyway... Internet - No way - impossible. I spend almost all my waking hours online (of course I am a web programmer too - so my full time job requires me to work online and then my side projects are websites too)... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  13. Great seeing the site back and working wonderfully. Calls server hospital and takes ER off stand by and puts away the AED. Great Job Scouter.com Team!!! Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  14. I am weird I don''t generally even use a tent most of the time I just put a tarp down and sleep under the stars. However this also depends on location and weather of course, and I am only older then the young and way younger then the old My Wackiness Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  15. We don''t have any in our council to my knowledge. However many units around here run there own, and often will help other Scouts (in other units) if asked. My troop is just getting our uniform "bag" organized. We bring the bag with odd uniform parts (mostly stuff our Scoutmaaster buys himself at thrift stores) that the Boys can get. We generally ask they trade something that no longer fits or offer some kind of donation to help SM get more stuff. However if a boy just can''t afford of course they will get a started set for free. As a side note I have thought a lot about trying to start a national uniform closet program through InsaneScouter which would be some kind of pictures / available list online and managed through mail regardless if trade or small fee. The problems to make this happen from how to handle shipping costs, get the starting inventory, volunteers to help run it, organizing it, and on goes the 10 mile list has prevented this idea. If anyone thinks this is a good idea and has ideas on how to make it work, let me know... Anyway as always just my wacky 2 insane wild cents... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  16. We have troop tents and encourage the Scouts to use them. Adults usually use there own. We prefer the scouts to use the Troop tents, but would consider letting them use their own on request. I can tell you the usually problems we face with tents is holes and broken zippers. One year at summer camp we had a Scout get mad at a Scout in another tent. The mad scout climbed tree below the tent of the other scout and shall we say took a dump on it. You never know what will happen. The tent basically had to be destroyed we could not get rid of the smell. As this was a Troop tent it was easy to deal with, if it would have been the Scouts personal tent the parents may of insisted the Troop replace it. I think you get the point anyway ... Just my wacky 2 cents... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  17. Welcome to our virtual campfire ... Here is my 2 cents... 1) To my knowledge there is no BSA rule that says you cant use some form of a RV. I know of a leader in another Troop that would only attend if he could bring his family 5th wheel toy hauler rv trailer (around 25-30 feet long). He had some kind of medical problem with his back. The Troop generally allowed this as long as no other Scout including his own were allowed to sleep in the trailer. 2) I would generally try to discourage using a rv and know most units do. Even the unit in above example discouraged it as much as possible. Now for a bit of clearfication. Are we talking like a small camper on back of a pick up truck, a small trailer, etc. How noticeable is it. Just my wacky cents ... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  18. We generally just come up with a menu and ask everyone to bring a few items. This seems to work for us, but my not work at all for others. You have to be able to trust them to show up or let you know a few days in advance if something comes up to cover those items they were to bring. Just the wacky way we do it... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  19. Excellent point Venividi ... One thing I try to say normally but don''t get it to come out right is... We are here to help the boys. Every place and every unit is different. What matters is that we give every boy the opportunity to take advantage of what Scouting has to offer, it does not matter how we make this happen (as long as its moral and with in BSA guidelines). What works for one unit will not work for another. I included need to slow down and seek the wisdom of what is working for others and share what is working for us. Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  20. My troop does not charge dues at all. We ude fundraisers, etc to pay for events. We do charge for campouts - depending on cost of campsite and patrol food this is usually less then $5 and never over $10 for a weekend campout. I do not have a problem with small dues at a Pack level to cover den project costs such as craft supplies. When I was a Webelos den leader I had dues at like $5 a month and worked with parents with more then one son in the den. Hope my wacky 2 cents was useful... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  21. Me wishes I had my own kid to brag about, but until that times comes I will just brag about the scouts in the troop Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  22. I have create a new pro-type home page and some other possible global changes. Anyone who would like to take a look and give me some feed back go to http://www.insanescouter.org/staff/new/ Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  23. I agree with what other have said, it is wrong for them to say you have to sell the popcorn, but I know of nothing that says they can''t do it that either. Maybe you should look for another unit in your area. Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  24. Thanks nldscout I most have missed or forgot about that one. Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  25. can you share a sampling of their menus with us? Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
