  1. We take advantage of the DARE program here for that requirment. Maybe the DARE website has something ... checking (sorry I cant resist a chance to be 12 again ) ... nope dont see much ... hmm didn''t find much through google either ... maybe BSA''s video "Drugs a Deadly Game" would work ... When I was a Webelos Den Chief (long time ago) I heard the best answer for what "A Scout Is Brave" I have ever heard and it came from the Webelos den leader. He said "Brave is not fighting of a tiger or standing in front of a moving car that is just dumb, brave is having the guts to just say NO to drugs, to someone trying to do something to you" Ok I paraphrased it and modernized it a bit... but you get the idea ... 2. Congradzzzz ... I am a bobwhite too ... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  3. I had to add this in... friend and I were talking more and we realized that our 4th teacher would be the exact same ... now that is ironic ... 4th teacher computer... for me it was an Apple II E which taught me more then the school system could... ok I just showed my age now ... runs and hides my wrinkled skin in a dark corner ... 4. To bad you are no where close to use, we need a good feeder pack ... My thought is the committee should be the one planning the event. In a large pack, a sub-committee (a small group of leaders and parents) may take on the task and report regularly back to the committee. As a side note... at the Boy Scout level this would be handled by the youth leaders through the Patrol Leader Council. Just my wacky 2 cents.... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  5. A friend and I tried to take your quiz ... uhm will I could answer the two business one but only because I am involved in the business world... I could name 3 teachers that had really effected me and with over 22 years in Scouting 5 leaders was easy ... I would like to take a side moment to shake hands with all you teachers on the list and thank each and every one of you personally Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  6. My first instinct reading this post was to say it is a tarentula too... but like said earlier a location would be very helpful... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  7. We have cholla here in Nevada ... and yes I and some of our scouts have been attacked by it... and no swearing needed I know they actually jump .... all you have to do is get about an inch from it and it will leap from the plant and embed itself in you .... all I can say is OUCH!!! Oh and if you want a painful cactus story .... I will make this short .... On a campout the scouts were playing a game. One of the scouts decided to slide down the side of a ditch (about 5-6 feet) legs opened and slid right into a cactus ... left lots of needles in him ... some time in a tent pulling out the needles himself he was fine and joined back in the game ... 8. teach them this saying that I saw on a sign in a National Park "Leave only foot prints, take only pictures and kill only time" Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  9. Makes sense to me, but I have not been really involved in cubs in years ... hope my wacky cents is helpful... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  10. In my humble option as long as they are performing useful service for their age, skill level, etc and making a difference in the enviorment regardless of how close or far from buildings and roads it would count. Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  11. Your description is leading me to think its the Century plant also know as the yucca .... http://www.sbs.utexas.edu/bio406d/images/pics/aga/yucca.rupicola3.JPG see the stick now dead coming out of the center of the cactus. Also as memory serves this is also known as the century plant and there is like a $500 fine related to them as the stick part only grows once every 100 years (will in reality its more then that buts thats where the name came from)... I live in middle of the mojave desert and we have them here. I am by no means a plant expert so I may be way off on what you are looking for, and some of my other info may be wrong to... wonders what others think ... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  12. Nice, I like all three podcasts and the Melrose ones too ... I encourage anyone who hasn''t to go check all of them out. Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  13. Last I heard hear is that if you took in class it was good for 3 years and online it was good forever ... will I never really bought into that and retake now then on my own anyway... besides I am one of those over-trained young leaders that does (will did) serve on the district training team... What the real times of youth protection I do not know... but I just wanted to add in my wacky 2 cents ... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time
  14. Try ebay and all your local thrift stores... most of my troops uniform exchange program are uniforms our scoutmaster buys at local thrift stores... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time
  15. As far as I know it can be more then one position ... but maybe some one on the list who serves on Eagle Boards should let us know what they think ... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time
  16. We are bit weird but with good reason... The SPL / ASPL is elected for 1 year that way they have plenty of time to make a differences and so that each does one Summer camp ... this seems to work will for us The PL''s etc are in 6 month rotations 12 months seem a bit much for them to handle ... 17. Wow, that seems like a radical way to wrangle them in, I am sending your thoughts on to our Scoutmaster ... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time
  18. I would suggest you contact local units and ask them if they could use some more xyz gear ... you may be able to do this through roundtable as well as finding unit websites. I know many units would jump on the chance to buy "experienced gear" as long as it was not totally worn out or over priced... 19. Welcome to the virtual campfire... pull up a log and have a nice relaxing chat .... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time
  20. Pack378 what category did you post under on craigs list? Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
  21. No matter the age of the Scout make sure they have the experience, mental and physical ability to complete the hike. Just becuase the Scout can do a short 2-3 mile hike does not mean they are ready to do a longer 20 mile hike. Take it one step at a time and build up. If you believe the Scout has the physical / mental ability and staimia then there is no rule I know of that says a new Scout can''t participate. However I know there are many references to their ability and safety. Now in my option most 5th graders would not be up for a 20 mile hike... maybe what you should do is set up a good adventure (for their abilities) for any one else to do so they don''t feel left out ... I understand this is a merit bagde, keep in mind I am just tossing thoughts out and its 1am ... Wacky Scouting Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time
  22. I bought a coke instead, hope that is ok ... Congratulations to the new member of the Eagle Nest... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time
  23. I had a computer teacher in college that took every tv out of the house, even out of their cabin. He said it was amazing the time the found and the changes in his kids. He did say he had his laptop setup for tv, for news and that kind of thing. Not sure how far he actually took it. I do think it could be an interesting experiment, a challenge, live without tv for 30 days. Anyway just thinking wacky thoughts after midnight Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time
  24. Ah nice idea on behalf of BSA. Thanks for sharing the link for me. Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time
  25. I wish I could get paid just $1.00 an hour for the work I do in Scouting (yes I am joking around) ... think about how much that could be worth at the end of one year... lol ... I am glad so many of us, including me put in the over time (anything over the one hour a week) to help the boys and at the same time helping the planet. I think we should form a friendship circle and take a moment of vanity and salute each other ... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time
