  1. I sent you a PM regarding this as I have a chart already made up! Judy
  2. LOL!!! I love that! I''ve had some of them said to me as a kid & I''ve said some to my 2 Lovely children!
  3. Thanks for the info everyone! I''m glad that doing a town clean up is ok & we''ll do the town clean up in November! InfoScouter, we''ve been discussing the impact of littering, etc. to the environment & this will show it. Thanks for the other ideas too as that will help them understand better.
  4. Hi Folks! This year the boys in my Bear den are going to work on the Leave No Trace award. I was wondering if the boys & I could do a clean up with our town''s civic organization. The civic organization does a monthly clean up & beautification (taking care of the planter barrels around town) of the 2 main roads in town & in the summer they do a clean up at the lake. If this doesn''t qualify as a service project, does anyone have other suggestions? Thanks in advance! Judy
  5. I used 5 of the monthly themes last year (2006-2007) when my boys were Wolves. I incorporated achievement/elective requirements when I could, we used the activity books & crafts from the den meeting in a box & I have even changed words to several songs for the boys to sing at pack nights! The boys love to sing & do skits & we would work on them at den meetings so they could sing & act at pack night. I would try & use songs & skits related to the theme. They had a blast! I pick & choose from the program helps book what I think would work the best & sometimes
  6. Thanks SWScouter & Epalmer84 for your help! I'm never too old to learn!
  7. I've only been involved in Scouting since Sept 2002 when my son joined as a Bear; he's in Boy Scouts now. The question I have is are today's Belt loops & pins from the Cub scout Academic & Sports Program actually from an older Boy Scout program? And, if so, why the change? Thanks in advance to anyone who answers my question!
  8. We (my son-Boy Scout, my daughter-Junior Girl Scout & me, Wolf DL)with our respective troops & pack, went to Calverton National Cemetery on Saturday to place flags on the soldiers graves. My pack also had a car wash fundraiser after that. On Monday, we will be marchign in our town's Memorial Day Parade & the there's a service afterwards & wreaths are placed around the memorial. We've been doing this every year since 2003 when we joined Scouting.
  9. Isn't that cool! I saw her being interviewed on Channel 12 News (Long Island Station) & she also show some pictures from her photo album! I agree with what she said about the Girl Scout uniform & the leaders not wearing any uniform! Right before her interview they had spoken to some of the girls from the Nassau County Council & 1 of the things that the girls wanted to get rid of was the uniform! It wasn't "cool"! That is wrong to get rid of the uniform!
  10. Most parents get involved as leaders in Scouts because their children are in Scouts, that's how I got involved. I don't think a 22 year old female with a baby should be a SM because I don't think she can devote enough time to the troop. She's a single mom & I'm sure she's busy with her baby & work! Also, I don't think having anyone that young to be a SM is a good idea! I do think that a male that age that was in Boy Scouts from start to finish would probably do a fine job as an ASM because he has Scouting experience. If the female had a son in the troop, that would be a different story
  11. Thanks Infoscouter! What Destiny's Child did to the uniform was a disgrace!
  12. I believe that Jerry Mathers, the actor who played Beaver Cleaver, was a Cub Scout. I think I read that when he was audtioning for the part he was a little "antsy" because he didn't want to miss his den meeting. I don't recall if I read that he went to the audition in his Cub Scout uniform. I do have a question regarding Scouting in TV or movies. If they have Cub, Boy or Girl Scouts is in a show or movie, are the actors allowed to wear the official uniform or do they have real scouts in the movie or TV show? In the movie "Down & Derby were the boys actual Cub Scouts? I'm sure that in
  13. Last year when my boys were Tigers, I called up our high school radio station to see if the den could visit. They told us the best time & day, which was around 7pm during the week. We went & the boys had a blast! They even got to record their voices & then the manager altered the boys voices to sound funny! Try your local high school! Good luck!
  14. My son & I went in October 2004 when he was a Web II; the Web I's went also. It was a little warm for me but we had a great time. I & another mom were the only females who went from our group so we had regular bunks & our own bathroom! We slept on the Destroyer, not the Battleship. My son slept with the guys on the other end of the ship & he said he didn't sleep well because of the snoring! I found the food pretty good & so did my son & there are long lines if you don't get there early enough! Make sure you see everything including the museum which is about a
  15. Eagle Pete, OK, I just thought the Totin' Chip the boys earn as a Boy Scout gives them the right to carry (tote) the pocketknife. Thanks!
  16. I thought that Cub Scouts were NOT allowed to carry pocketknives at Cub Scout camp, etc. even if they've earned the Whittlin' Chip card. I thought only Boy Scouts were allowed to carry pocketknives after they've earned the Totin' Chip card. I remember when my son was a Cub that I had to carry his knife on campouts even though he earned his Whittlin' Chip card. The boy was wrong for pulling the knife & I think he might have some anger issues as maybe he's being bullied. That's no excuse though for what he did. He should have his knife & Whittlin' Chip card removed from him & he
  17. It's probably because the boys don't like swimming in a lake! My son went to summer camp last year & he didn't pass the swim test because he didn't like swimming in the lake. He does swim in a pool though. He did complete the swimming requirements for Second & First Class in the pool. There were several of the new scouts last year that didn't like swimming in the lake too! I only swim in pools myself! Now, being from Long Island I am surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean & the Long Island Sound but I only swam in the ocean once! I went in the water got picked up by a small wave, co
  18. We have 2 national cemeteries here on Long Island, Pinelawn & Calverton. My 2 children & I have been going to Calverton since May 2003 when my son was in his 1st year of Cub Scouts. Our pack reserves the same site every year & we do that along with the Boy Scout troop my son belongs to now. It was reported on our local tv news that there were 6,000 volunteers, mostly Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts (Brownies & Juniors) this year & that 192,000 were placed at Calverton. We go back on June 3rd for flag retrieval. We also marched in our town's Memorial Day Parade
  19. Ma Scout, Being diagnosed with depression is not a valid reason or excuse for this scout to steal. Depression is feeling useless, constantly sad, no or very low self-esteem, giving up on life, losing interest in things you loved doing, etc. I know as I've been diagnosed with clinical depression & have been on anti-depressants since April 1999 & I never once thought of stealing anything! IMO the scout committed a crime & should be punished & I don't think he's Eagle "material" (for lack of a better word). Also, $300.00 is a lot of money, it's not pocket change. Judy
  20. Thanks Semper! I will tell that to the other committee members. I think it's pretty cool that you can design the shirt yourself!
  21. I was wondering if anyone has created & ordered pack or troop t-shirts on-line from Class B's or Custom Ink's website. If so, were the shirts, designs, screenprinting or embroidery of good quality? We're looking into getting new pack t-shirts & I was just wondering if any of you have used these on-line companies. Thanks! Judy
  22. I always told my 2 childrens teachers that their father died when they were little & on Father's Day they always made something for their grandfather. They only have my parents as grandparents as my husbands parents died at least 10 years before I met him. Their teachers have always been great about that & when the fathers would come to school, my dad would go for my children. It's not easy for the children either & I'm glad that you're going to remind their teachers. I hope that they have at least 1 grandmother that they can make a gift for. Also, remind the teachers to make
  23. I noticed that too when I was looking at new pants for my son as he's outgrown the ones he's wearing! I talked to the manager & he told me that they're being made outside the US to bring down costs. Now I'd like to know why the pants were still $37.00 & made in the Dominican Republic!!! I didn't buy them because I don't have the money yet!
  24. I'm doing that & I'm having a great time! My son, who joined Cub Scouts in 3rd grade, crossed over to Boy Scouts in March 2005 & I wasn't needed in the troop, not even as a committee member. I was still involved with the pack as part of the committee. I really missed the weekly den meetings, I was the Assistant DL & I told the CM that in September if none of the new Tiger's parents want to be the Den Leader that I would be the DL. Well, no one wanted to be the Tiger DL & I'm having a great time with the boys & their parents, we've done a lot of fun & different activitie
