  1. Let's remember that the uniform is a method of Scouting, not a goal. For what it's worth: *The patch above Mr. Coronado's right pocket is the emblem of the American Indian Scouting Association. http://www.americanindianscouting.org/ *I can't tell if he has three or four beads on his thong, but Wood Badge staff now wear the training neckerchief until the end of the course. *The Wood Badge neckerchief uses a twill weave with a face (the top weave) of deep peach and a back of red. (I use color charts in my work) *The flap patches the Scouts are wearing are the Totin' C
  2. I wear my Eagle Scout medal to Eagle Scout courts of honor. I wear the Silver Beaver medal to the council dinner when the Silver Beaver is awarded. The Scouts and Scouters who have religious awards wear the medals on Scout Sunday. Otherwise, medals stay on my "love me" wall. Ed
  3. And not a note on the Young American Award. The BSA site shows a gold medal, but every photo of awardees shows a gold medal on a ribbon. Ed
  4. Color guard or honor guard training is perfectly fine. It is when you have them marching with a rifle (even a dummy) on their shoulder that you cross the line of "technical military drill and training." Troops can't wear a custom emblem (crews can), but there is a flag ceremony patch you could wear as temporary insignia: http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?ctlg=05NDC&ctgy=PRODUCTS&c2=UNIFORMS&c3=SEMBLEMS&c4=&lv=3&item=80202 Ed
  5. When you can buy Ceremony for the Ordeal and books on eBay, it is hard to keep secrets.
  6. The BSA trademarked the ax-in-log logo? I though that was the logo of Gilwell Park. http://www.scouts.org.uk/nationalcentres/gilwellactivity.html Ed
  7. Personally, I like the Schrade Cliphanger with 2 partially serrated blade. The thumb stud and the linerlock make it very easy to open and close with one hand. I've lost a few over the years, but at under $10, the price is right. I have a Schrade leather sheath that fits on my belt horizontally. The Code of Virginia prohibits the carry of dirks, switchblades and ballistic knives. Machetes are unlawful when carried on a person and concealed. Knives, except for "a pocket knife having a folding metal blade of less than three inches" are prohibited in school. If the local schools hav
  8. > Your patches should be covered by your home owners insurance. You need to check with your insurer. I read the fine print when I bought this house. With my insurer, collections are insured only if they are itemized, valued and registered with the insurance company. Ed
  9. Exploring is under the Learning for Life program, which does not subscribe to the Declaration of Religious, Scout Promise or Scout Law. There are no restrictions as to gender or sexuality. Thus, there are no issues with chartering a unit to a government entity. Ed
  10. Some years ago, I was taught the Philmont fold. This is a method of wrapping the foil dinner so that the package stands upright. You can get a larger number of packages on a bed of coals and they cook perfectly. I can't find this online anywhere... Ed
  11. Let me address the technical aspects of the PDF version of the application: Eagle Scout Rank Application 58-728 is available as a hardcopy form and as a PDF from NESA: http://nesa.org/trail/index.html You need Adobe Reader to open it: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html Note that the item number of 58-728 has a dash; this is a bin item there is no charge for the hardcopy and it can be reproduced for BSA use. To use the PDF: * Save it to your computer. * Open it in Adobe Reader. * Fill it in the latest version is has interactive fields * Save it,

  13. There is more on this in the November 2006 issue of Scouting: http://www.scoutingmagazine.org/issues/0511/d-news.html And, you can use the e-card at ScoutZone to help fulfill the requirement: http://www.thescoutzone.org/ecard.jsp Ed
  14. Doe anyone know what the emblem was for the American Boy Scouts? This is the group started by Hearst in 1910 that lasted about ten years. It was later known as the United States Boy Scouts.

  16. From the 1911 Handbook for Boys: To obtain a merit badge for Stalking a scout must: 1. Take a series of twenty photographs of wild animals or birds from life, and develop and print them. 2. Make a group of sixty species of wild flowers, ferns, or grasses, dried and mounted in a book and correctly named. 3. Make colored drawings of twenty flowers, ferns, or grasses, or twelve sketches from life of animals or birds, original sketches as well as the finished pictures to be submitted.

  18. http://tinyurl.com/39mzqb Cairo, Egypt, 12 November 2007 DECISION ADOPTED BY CONSENSUS The World Scout Committee acknowledging that the letters received from a group of National Scout Organizations (NSOs), the Chairman of the World Scout Foundation (WSF), Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and Swedish Scouts, as well as those from other NSOs expressing a contrary view, all contain legitimate concerns that demand the attention of the WSC and, more globally, the World Scout Conference at the same time, deploring in the strongest terms the unilateral actions and demands that have b

  21. These have been around for years. I have never been in a unit or district where they are used, but I expect some have a tradition. You can use this medal for any contest- camporees, Klondike derby and the like. Ed

Here is the relevant page from the online version of the Insignia Guide: http://www.scouting.org/pubs/33066/10K.html It does not specify whether partial rows should be centered or can be offset. In my opinion, it should be up to the wearer. Ed
