  1. Does anyone know specific questions asked at your boys Eagle BOR? How are they conducted in your Council? Here we have a Council Eagle BOR. It is run every month for boys in all the Districts.
  2. This sounds more like our Eagle pre-boards. Here we meet with the boy and cover any and all questions that might come up during his Eagle BOR. But, before and during this the boy is told there is a lot of material going to be covered and we keep notes so he can study things he might be especially weak in. We also review how his project went and see if there are any potential problems that could come up. Remember an Eagle project is not done until reviewed by the board. We also use three adults not from the Troop so the boy will become more at ease with being reviewed by strangers.
  3. 1. We have altered a few things based on comments from course participation evaluation forms. 2. everything but Sm specific and intro to Outdoor Leader training is offered multiple times. We've tried to offer this more, but cannot get the people there. 3. They must have the course they are going to train and we strongly suggest they take train the trainer. 4. Our trainers come from the Troops and Packs, but I don't think we specifially recruit the postions you mention. We do use the JLT staff to teach the Intro to Outdoor Leader. We feel it gives the boys an opportunity to practice thei
  4. packsaddle, I'm not sure why the ban on liquid fuels. The only answer I get is that the board did it and it probably is liability. They expect us to use propane stoves and lanterns. This ban has been in effect since before I started.
  5. kwc57, because many of our Troops do backpacking, canoeing and other high adventure trips where these stoves can be used. We feel that since they are allowed by National we should make sure they are included in our training.
  6. YPT is good for life, same as SM Leader Specific training. It is recommended that you retake training every three years or when things change, but not required. One of the problems we have are with rules our Council has, as opposed to National. Our Council does not permit liquid fuel stoves or lanterns at their camps except for training purposes. We try to explain this is a Council rule but many adults don't see the difference. There are some Council rules that are different from National rules.
  7. If you have activities that aren't working the committees in charge should be able to help. The District events should be set by the District Committee. These volunteers should be able to remove any they feel are in excess or have little following. The training committee should be able to remove or consolidate any they feel are not needed. Our Troops usually plan around the Council calendar, which comes out in August. It's great to meet the other Troops at these activities.
  8. Try this web page www.southmilwaukee.org/scouts252/SKILLS/hobo_stove.htm
  9. I too went out of Council. The benefits I think are you meet new and different people. You get a different feeling for the course not knowing anyone, although I'm speaking from a perspective of the old course. I haven't seen the new course, but hope to be on staff in 2004.
  10. OGE I know there was a big discussion about this ticket thing when you asked about it, but I was just wondering why you didn't give troop_358 any insight about the ticket. In my district we usually know when someone is doing a ticket item and anyone I talked to would show me their ticket. I had lots of advice on things I could do by people who knew me and my needs. I don't think it's a big secret I think it is just a personal thing that only you and maybe a few personal scouter friends can advise you on.
  11. When did he do his project, before or after the typhoon? I believe the fact that you weren't chartered is probably irrelevant under the disaster conditions. Here in our council they approve projects at a monthly meeting, so it takes at least one month for the approval, 2 if they have concerns about it. He should have known the timetable if he was following the Life to Eagle packet. Did he submit an Eagle application without the required signatures? National will not accept an application without them and would reject and send it back to the Council. Under these circumstances I don't believe
  12. I have seen Bead presentations at District Dinners, Troop meetings, after a closing campfire at summercamp, and some that were just their own ceremony. Mine will be presented at a Wood Badge reunion gettogether. I agree with you that a COH should be just for the boys and a WB presentation could take away from that. Eagles fly the highest.
  13. The test administrator must objectively evaluate the individual performance of the test, and in so doing should keep in mind the purpose of each test element. "Jump feetfirst into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. . . ." The swimmer must be able to make an abrupt entry into deep water and begin swimming without any aids. Walking in from shallow water, easing in from the edge or down a ladder, pushing off from side or bottom, or gaining forward momentum by diving do not satisfy this requirement. This was taken from the G2SS. I guess now you would have to de

Thank you all for your feedback, I have learned a great deal. Even though we were told it was ok, it seems tubing is only for Webelos. Twocubdad, I checked out the Age Appropriate guide and found some other interesting things. Tigers can do commercial go carts, canoe and raft on flat water(on district or council level),go bouldering, and Wolves and Bears can also do horseback riding, but they cannot row on flat water or go tubing. Thanks again for all the information. Looks like we will have to change our program for this summer.

SAFE EQUIPMENT(NOT LEAKING AIR) is the reason we need new tubes. I called the aquatics director and he said he asked about tubing at camp school and was told it was ok, rafting was equated to whitewater rivers. Also when camp was inspected this activity was going on and the inspectors witnessed and approved it. It is one of three Council camps. Don't they have to have their program reviewed by National every year? This activity has been going on for years, have all the Council Execs, DE's, Camp Inspectors been wrong in interpreting this? I will bring this up at the next Board meeting and we wi

I thought rafting and tubing were two different things, as listed in the Safety Afloat and as long as you have the trained adults and PFD's, that tubing was allowed. Does tubing fall under the rafting guidelines or is it separate?

Our Cub Camp is situated next to a river, slow moving and not to deep. Besides swimming in the pool, once a week they tube in the river about 200 yards. The tubes are all old and leaking air, does anyone know were we can get more tubes suitable for the river that aren't too expensive? The tire dealers around here won't even sell inner tubes anymore because they are afraid of the liability. We would need about 20-25 tubes. The only ones I can find online are the ones you tow behind a boat, but are too expensive (about $70.00). The only solution we have so far is to buy 2-3 of these a year until
  18. Once we rented the dinning hall at camp for a winter weekend. We partitioned off, with tarps, three areas for sleeping. One for youth, one for male leaders and one for female leaders. This is the only time we did cabin camping in the winter, we usually camp in tents. I'm not sure if this satisfied the G2SS requirements or not, but it was the best we could do without the females sleeping in tents outside.
  19. The last course our Council had was two weekends long. If you are new to venturing it can help a great deal. It explains the different ranks and the differences with Boy Scouts. It should have hands on with a lot of the instructors being experts in their fields. You can gain a lot of information for activities geard for the venturers. I would recommend it for anyone thinking of getting into Venturing. Talking to some of the participants that have been in venturing for some time, they said it reinforced what they were doing and did clear up some confussion they had with parts of the venturing p
  20. I agree that a good Troop JLT is needed and the SM should not pass of this responsibility. As you have stated this starts a downwward spiral that is hard to stop. I also think that is why Hanaski is seeing such a wide variey of qualities in the boys coming out of JLT. I believe that the weeklong course is not for everyone. The SM's should be sending only those boys who have shown an interest or ability in leading. Too many boys are being sent in the hopes that they will come back to the Troop as good leaders.
  21. I would also like to see what changes are being looked at. I hope they are not going to take out all the scoutskills, lashings, and cooking that they removed from the Wood Badge. I think the patrol concept and 11 leadership points are needed for the boys and believe that the JLT does more to reinforce these principles. I have done 2 of these trainings and have seen how the youth staff has come together and how most of the participants have gone back to their Troops and made a difference. I believe the new WB does not do anything to help new leaders with these principles, but that is a differe
  22. Ed From NEPA Council our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Lahoff and his family.
  23. I thought for a GS unit to go camping it was required that one leader have the GS outdoor or camping training. I'm not that familiar with GS as I have three boys. Do they have any types of training? Are they having problems getting leaders trained just like in BS? I think all leaders should get trained in whatever it is they are in. GS leaders might need this training more because they never had the opportunity to go camping.
  24. We also have enough tents for the whole Troop but we let the boys decide if they want to bring their own tent. We explain the differences in tents and that they don't need to go out and buy one. It is also made clear that the quartermaster needs to know who is bringing a tent so he doesn't have extra ones to worry about and he won't have an extra one if they forget theirs.
  25. In our Pack the dens meet once a week, with a Pack meeting once a month.
