  1. Try the McScouter.com web page. They have just listed some PowWow books that cover this topic as well as the other topics for each month.
  2. I have missed the changes to First Class. Can you please fill me in. I know they were changing the merit badge again, but not First Class.
  3. Not only the cooking, but what about the 10 Troop/patrol activities. In our Council the summer camp fast track only concetrates on the basics. Some scoutcraft, nature and swimming. They realize that the scouts can't become first class just by going to fast track at camp. Our boys know that we expect them at some time to demonstrate what they have learned up to first class. As for Merit badges you can ony check out the councelors, report them to your district and hope for the best. We also insist that a boy have a blue card before he talks to a councelor.
  4. Kevin, First you should talk to the professionals in your Council. They should be able to help you find the vacancies and give you insight. Remember, usually to advance up the ladder you have to move from Council to Council. Good luck. I think we need more professionals who come from our roots.
  5. OGE My guess is you were watching a New Orleans Saints game. Maybe some Scouter from New Orleans can help you.
  6. Martha, sorry I didn't read here first. Check the OA thread above
  7. Martha, The OA is a national part of Boy Scouts in the U.S.A. Its purpose is to recognize campers who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. That said, to be eligible a boy must be First Class, 13, and have 14 days and nights camping in the last two years, 7 of which must be long term camping. They are elected by the members of their own Troop. All boys in the Troop may vote, not just the OA members. It was founded on Brotherhood, Cheerfulness, and Service. It was founded at Treasure Island, the Philadelphia Council Camp. It uses many of the local American Indian tradition
  8. I would like to know what kind of Den it is and what the money is going for. I know here that Cub resident camp costs about $175.00 per boy. If this leader is trying to get all the boys to camp it can be a good way to earn the money. How much money goes to each boy from your Pack fund raiser? It sounds like there is a need for better communicaations, so all involved know more of what is going on. I think eisely has the best plan.
  9. On the first question, our Troop works the same as jmcquillan's. I think the continuity for the year is better. We hold elections right after summer camp. This allows the new SPL to get everything going for the new year. I also agree with the rest of what he said. On the second question, FScouter, I'm with you. We do have some pre-requisites for our SPL, but none for PL's. I don't believe that a higher rank always means a better leader. I also believe that the boys usually don't make the same mistake twice. In our Troop we have a system where we allow a patrol to change their PL if they beli
  10. This is a tough question for the boys. As far as living together I would try to explain it to the boys. But, I agree whith Jmcquillan, the Boy Scouts have a clear policy on non married male and females shareing a tent together. It states that only married couples can share the same tent. I would have to insist that this policy be followed at any campout. If you loose these adults it is their decission. It may be a great loss but the rules should be followed.
  11. Our district just ran the new Cub leader specific trainings. Has anyone else been involved in this? We seemed to think there was not enough time or information for Cubmaster, den leader, webelos den leader or committee person. Are we trying to give them too much? I know there is supposed to be supplemental training, but most of the participants said they probably wouldn't go and they felt that more should have been given at this training. We are having some success with roundtable, but most of the leaders say they just don't have the time to go to everything needed.
  12. This might put a different spin or perspective on this question. I think one of my Scouts said it best. During his Eagle BOR, he was asked what Eagle meant to him. His answer was not much. After the board recovered they asked him to explain and he said that while it is a great achievment he has known scouts who never achieved Eagle, but got the program. They could lead, follow and teach all the skills. He also knew some boys who were Eagles that could do none of these things very well. He said that he must know the boy before making any judgement based just on being an Eagle or not. By the way
  13. I just worked on a Powder Horn training course and both questions were brought up. They said a boy must retain their membership in a Troop to attain Eagle and that only a Troop can have an OA election. I will go through my material to see where it can be found and will contact the instructor if I can't find the info. Any adult Troop leader, who meets the camping requirment, may become a member of the OA.
  14. Sue According to the bsa.scouting.org/factsheets/02-511/1920.html Cub Scouting was an experiment in 1929 and formally started in 1930.
  15. When I was a Webelos den leader I ran my 2nd year den as a patrol. We had a patrol leader, assistant, scribe and treasurer. We rotated every month or so. The patrol leader was in charge and led our den openings. The scribe kept any important notes, and the treasurer collected dues and paid any bills. There was a lot of guidance on my part, as I didn't want to overwelm them and their term was short. This seemed to work well as our den went into the Troop as a new patrol. On your Junior Leaders, have they had any Junior Leader Training? There are some great training courses for boys to teach
  16. jmcquillan, try and find a different Troop in your area. You are too valuable to get out completely. After 20 years in your district you must have some friends that could use your help. I too have done this for 23 yrs. and always said when it's not fun anymore I would be gone. I have been with my Troop for 15 years, but because no one wants to help, it has become no fun for me also. I am currently looking at some other Troops in my area. I believe the parents today just don't want to take the time to do it right. They don't understand the "patrol method" and don't want to. These boys are missi
  17. The Boy Scouts do have a handbook for Chaplain's Aide. It is similar to the one for Patrol Leader and the other Junior Leaders. Check with your Council office. It should help your Scout get started in the right direction.
