  1. Anyone have a link to the Troop Committee Guide Book online?
  2. Does the Scoutmaster vote on Committee decisions?
  3. Interesting that those who champion the boy led troop concept (and I'm all for it!) are also willing to tell the Scouts what MB's they can take and what ones they can't! Not me, if camp offers Cit. in Whatever and the Scout wants to take it then I say great, go for it! Would I rather them take Swimming or Lifesaving, sure but I'm not deciding for them what they should do. Maybe a suggestion but no mandates from me! What happens when you say no to the Scout that only needs these MBs for Eagle? Do you deny them? One troop I know of allows their Scouts to only take ONE required MB per summer camp
  4. Check out this thread: http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=193028&p=1 and this site: http://www.meritbadgeknot.com./
  5. At todays summer camp it seems as if a Scout doesn't come home with 4 or 5 MBs he's been goofing off! Our camp has done a better job of publishing prerequisites which if a Scout comes prepared allows him to complete the more involved MBs. Also more flexible scheduling of MBs at camp allows Scouts who finish one badge early to go for another latter in the week. In one way I think this is good; flexible schedules allow more productive use of the Scouts time at camp. Don't have anything to do this afternoon, go up to the admin building and tell them you want to take Plumbing MB, they'll find a co
  6. Permission to use Scouts in advertising. When my council got word from National over Joe Corbi's pizza doing the same thing they made all units stop selling their products sigting copy right infringements. Seems like the same thing here.
  7. $1500.00 is the cost. I really had to dig for the price, they don't seem to be very up front about the cost. You have to click the "Get your Society Membership Here" link. Also there are several pictures of Scouts in their advertising material.
  8. In our troop Star and higher, SM and ASM's sign off on T, 2, 1 ranks with the exception of the Scout Spirit requirement, only the SM signs that. Only the SM signs off on Star and up.
  9. mdsummer45, you PM'ed me a while back to an email address that I rarely check. I just sent you a reply but it bounced back. Since we're from neighboring districts in the same council and I spent many years in your district if you would like some insight into the workings of your district I might be able to help you. This forum is not the place to do this so if you want to talk PM me with you email address.
  10. It's been a month and a half since mdsummer45 last posted. Is there an update or resolution?
  11. Not that any of us have a say in any of this, the wars, the bail outs, health care reform. Well we might have a say in health care reform (or is it health insurance inform today) if things keep going they way they've been going at these town hall meetings.
  12. "So you'd rather spend $2,287 of your own money helping foreigners than spend $166 to help Americans? That's pretty liberal of you." WOW! That's the first time I've ever been called a liberal! I'm insulted. I happen to support what our country has done and continues to do in promoting freedom throughout the world. I spend more than $166 a MONTH supporting my Scout troop. Does that qualify as helping Americans?
  13. If a Scout has completed all the requirements except SMC, Scout Spirit, and BOR the main reason he would be deferred is for Scout Spirit. I follow this as a guideline: "Scout spirit applies to how a Scout lives and conducts his 'daily' life. He shows Scout spirit by being a role model to his peers, living by the Scout Oath and Law. The concept of Scout spirit is not based on how many Scouting events or outings a Scout attends, but rather by how he helps bring out the best in others as a reflection of his own character and attitude in his 'daily' life." If the Scout
  14. I skipped the lousy popcorn and just donated 25 bucks to the troop!
  15. I checked out the link to costofwar.com I don't have a problem with spending $2,287.00 of my money (per person to date/Iraq) to free 28 million people. But that's just me, you may feel differently. I do have a problem bailing out insurance and car companies who created their own problems, unlike the people of Iraq who had no choice.
  16. This source says the new positions do count towards Eagle: www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/AdvancementandAwards/2010RankUpdates.aspx "Star, Life, and Eagle Troop Webmaster and Leave No Trace trainer are two new leadership positions."
  17. Welcome! I hope you enjoy your time as a CM. If I could make one suggestion it would be to contact your Unit Commissioner, he or she will be able to help you.
  18. I think we should bring back Swimming and Lifesaving MBs as the only option. When I was a kid my dad was an ASM and we had a boy in our troop who could not swim. For two summer camps he failed the swimmer test. This Scout decided he would work at swimming until he could pass. He came to our house to swim in our pool almost every day. My dad worked with him until we went to summer camp. He passed his swimmer test at camp and took Swimming MB and passed it too. The next year he took Lifesaving MB and passes that. He became an Eagle Scout but it didn't come easy. Unless you have a physical han
  19. Went to Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation for summer camp two weeks ago, this is Baltimore Area Council's camp. All the staff were wearing Under Armour class "B" type shirts with the camp name on them. I just figured they were a donation from UA since they are a Baltimore based company. By the way BCMSR is a great camp!
  20. I have seen the "baby sitting service" in units, usually it's in Cubs. It depends on the leadership of the troop. My youth Scouting was done in the 60's and early 70's. In those days there were few after school programs. Scouting was the only thing I did outside of school. I was in it for the camping, hiking and other outdoor activities. Also most of my best friends were in the troop. Things are different now. TV, video games, baseball, basketball, soccer, everyone gets a car at 16. No wonder we have a hard time keeping youth focused on Scouting! But the ones that stay and make the most of i
  21. "Given the choice of going to camp with four or five people who knew what they were doing or taking an army of people who more than lightly will be gone within less than five years, I'd go with the four or five." Yea I agree that too many adults could create problems. Parents going just to watch their kids is a problem. They need to understand the program and what we are trying to accomplish. As far as our leader's skills, hopefully at least some of the adults will have some outdoor experience.
  22. Congratulations on your service. 50 years gets you a gold membership card. Would you care to remark on what has changed for the better and for the worse over those five decades?
  23. So is the problem the trailer or the "Fly Like an Eagle"logo? Or is it the old WB course was better than the new one, like we have a choice. Or is it that leaders don't possess the skills you think they should have. Or is it that there were, in your case case too many adults at summer camp. I wish I had that problem! I guess I'm missing the point.
  24. pohsuwed, I like the registry from a historical perspective. You have done a tremendous amount of work to document a part of BSA history. I wear the Eagle knot on my uniform, not because I feel the need for recognition but as an example for my Scouts, but that's just me. I wish you good luck but I think it will be a long road.
  25. Well I can't address this from the Cub Scout level but as a SM I would find this unacceptable and the parent would be asked to either desist said parent would not be welcome on future troop functions. I would think a discussion and warning for the next offense would be a good start.
