SSScout
Julie Seton , Ernest's granddaughter, recently spoke at our District RoundTable. She just happened to "be in the neighborhood" and our RT Asst. Commish met her at another BSA presentation, and she graciously came to our RT. She has republished some of her grandfather's books, among them his autobiography , Trail of an Artist-Naturalist: the autobiography of Ernest Thompson Seton You can contact her thru LinkedIn. Eagle94-A1
Give a short biographical summary of any TWO of the following, and tell of their roles in how Scouting developed and grew in the United States prior to 1940. Daniel Carter Beard William D. Boyce Waite Phillips Ernest Thompson Seton James E. West But not Bill Hillcourt Sad thing is IMHO, Bill did more than all the other combined. Yes all had part to play. If it wasn't for Boyce, BSA would not be around. Seaton and Beard provided a lot of knowledge, skills, and information into the early editions of the BSHB, and well as influencing BP. West provided the organization, and Phillips provided Philmont. BUT, William "GREEN BAR BILL" Hillcourt took their beginnings and "kicked it up a notch" or four. He was the face of Scouting, providing inspiration and guidance to generations of Scouts and leaders. And when the disasterous "Improved Scouting Program" came about ( and IMHO coming about again ), It was Bill Hillcourt who came out of retirement to write a BSHB that went back to basics and saved the BSA. Any scout who wishes to write about Bill, I'm OK with. Edited December 7, 2015 by Eagle94-A1
CalicoPenn
They went to a lot of trouble to include Waite Phillips name on that list which of course leads to the inevitable "What about Green Bar Bill" (and what about E. Urner Goodman?). The question is really about the founders of the BSA but gerry-mandered to include the donor of Philmont (which is why the prior to 1940 part of the question - Philmont was donated in stages from 1938 to 1940). It really should have remained about the founders and instead of including Phillips, should have included Mortimer L. Schiff. There could easily have been a second question asking about non-founders that had a big influence, like Green Bar Bill, E. Urner Goodman and Waite Phillps.
