  1. This is true. Other than membership policies, what changes has BSA made over the years that really made people question their relationship with the organization?
  2. The patriarchy is the feminist version of the Illuminati. If the girl scouts started accepting boys, would anyone care? Would anyone join?
  3. I expect anything public-facing to be smooth and bland. Anything contentious is probably done behind closed doors at invitation-only meetings.
  4. "BSA National Chairman Randall Stephenson will preside as the nominating, resolutions, and treasurer reports are presented. This action-packed general session will equip you as a key Scouter to provide leadership in 2018 and beyond." Sounds thrilling.
  5. I'm not concerned about my own troop. Our plan is to ignore it all. District or council events will be a different matter (which was also my concern about the last membership policy change).
  6. I wouldn't be too sure. There were a lot of rumors about political pressure making it possible for women to graduate from Ranger School. BP was a veteran and a gentleman. I think he would see the value in single-gender scouting. As for myself, I can't see me giving a scoutmaster minute to girls about treating women and girls with respect.
  7. Just plain Life is already taken. As is Man's Life.
  8. I was told by my council that there would be no Lone Scout option. That's just for the early adopters. After the official roll-out, there will be.
  9. A separate girl program run by BSA, allowed to cater to the needs and wants of girls (and possibly meander in a different direction than boy scouts)? Hear, hear?
  10. A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.
  11. Are you sure that was the internal survey and not the "recent survey of parents not involved with Scouting?" (Here they mean Scouting overall, not scouting scouting). If so, please tell us about it.
  12. The name change is a direct result of making scouting coed (here I'm referring to both cub scouting and scouting scouting). And yes, "girls are not welcome here" is the sentiment we want to convey. It's not that we hate them (I have three daughters for which I wish I could find a quality female-only scouting program), it's that the purpose of Boy Scouts (puts dollar in the swear jar) has traditionally been, and in our minds continues to be, a program unswervingly designed to build boys into men.
  13. But there's no way to stop the casual brand dilution when John Q. Public calls them girl scouts. I can see why GSUSA is so peeved.
  14. Do you mean the survey was presented or you saw the results of the survey?
  15. BSA is definitely not communist. Don't you remember when we all took those surveys on this issue and BSA shared the voting results with us?
  16. Most definitely. The emphasis is on the first "scouts." This is to differentiate from the scouts umbrella term. Our troop meets at the church on El Camino Way. The Scoutmaster is Ben MacDonaldson. Next month, we're going to visit the La Brea Tar Pits. Like so:
  17. Scouts scouts. For example: "I'm a scout leader." "Are you with the cubs, scouts, or venturers?" "Scouts scouts."
  18. That's something I would not bet against.
  19. In the absence of real information, what else are we supposed to do?
  20. My money's on the new name being "Randall Stephenson's Low-Risk Exclusively-Indoor After-School Program for AT&T Middle Management."
  21. If such is the case, can we use the phrase "Boy Scouts of America" as an object of resistance #resistance?
  22. Hey, if "packs are already doing it" is a valid reason to incorporate girls into BSA, why can't we push them to change the G2SS in the same manner?
  23. A joke, but a lame joke. I've seen just about everything used as a patrol patch (and a patrol flag): military insignia, biker patches, and even one patrol that wanted to use the Eagle Scout patch. They wanted to be the Eagle Scout Patrol (they weren't all Eagles, the Eagle Scout was their critter). That plan was abandoned when they realized how much grief they would get for having an Eagle Scout patch in the wrong location on their uniforms (among other considerations). I think trademark infringement is the last thing on a boy's mind when he's looking for patch for his patrol.
