  1. I agree completely, thanks, David, for what you do.
  2. Sounds more like either a nasty rumor or else it is a 'trial balloon' to gauge reaction. I wouldn't sweat it until it happens.
  3. One of my children had just been released from the hospital after a very delicate surgery. It was summer and it was really hot. The vehicle had been sitting in the sun for hours while we waited for the release. It finally came and we left, on our way home and then to the pharmacy for the prescribed medications. We were driving through a mixed residential/business neighborhood not too far from the hospital and the car cut off - probably vaporlock. I saw a row of cars parked on the side of the street in front of some houses so I coasted into a space near the back. Car wouldn't start. Child need
  4. Twocubdad, I don't consider 'snarky' an appropriate response if the comment isn't addressed to the 'snark' in the first place AND I certainly don't consider it appropriate if the comment is about something that involves a scouter advocating the kinds of things that JoeBob seems to advocate. In that case 'snarky', to me, seems to be an attempt to make light of something that I consider serious, indicating that the 'snark' also doesn't take those actions seriously. The better response, in this case, would be for the 'snark', if he can't say something serious, to say nothing.
  5. Which is what you did in that old post. No, there is no such thing in official literature and since you seem to be of the same uniform stickler cloth as the others, and since there was no response to my question, in the face of that 'cosmic' uncertainty I will borrow from ya lazima vumbi (or whatever his name is with my thanks) and end with my admonition to all of you who never ever break or bend any BSA rules, policies, or guidelines: "Ask not for whom the doughnut rolls, it rolls for thee"
  6. Stosh, just what is it that you think would be in line with scout spirit in the things you just mentioned? Which things would NOT?
  7. Stosh, I think it is disingenuous to ask the question you just asked, "What's a 'class-B'?" I say this because in a thread called "The Importance of Uniforming" you wrote the following which was Posted 18 June 2012 - 11:18 AM: "The consensus of today is that there is only slight if no importance at all of uniforming. T-shirts posing as "Class-B" i.e. second class uniforming, Activity shirts, blue jeans and a variety of every excuse under the sun precludes the necessity of the uniform, With the message being said and the actions demonstrated, it just might be a good time to dump the unifor
  8. JoeBob, on 25 Sept 2015 - 8:37 PM, said: and then: "Did you miss the part about that technique NOT being shared here for fear of teaching scouts bad behavior?" Really? You practically spelled it out for them. Do you not understand that "air inside tires slowly and quietly finding its way outside" is the same thing as deflating? I suspect the boys do and you just condoned the behavior - behavior that you admit is "bad behavior" - evidently to be casually disregarded saying "picky, picky" with a shrug. Is this your idea of a good role model for scouts?
  9. I am confident that both Krampus and BDPT00 always, ALWAYS follow to the letter every, EVERY policy and guideline that BSA has created. Am I right?
  10. JoeBob, I'm not sure how anyone can interpret this in terms other than your intent to be unfriendly to the other park patrons. That "really bad aim" comment (wink, wink) is particularly troubling. Most of all, that part about making the parking lot slippery. That's a safety issue that affects EVERYONE, not just the people you want to "really harass". In addition to being unfriendly, that is malicious. How can we interpret this as being within the bounds of Scout Law or Scout Spirit? I am astonished. If someone parks on your property you are within your rights to call law enforcement to i
  11. Consulting scientist. Mostly the energy sector. I don't talk much about my work in the public. Too many people want to argue and I don't have the time for most of them.
  12. DavidCO is right. Sports is practically an alternative form of worship for a lot of people, and sports celebrities are like members of the priesthood. But I guess this has always been the trend in 'pop culture' in which someone with a good voice (for example from something 'Idol' or something 'got talent') but very little else will nevertheless be 'worshiped' by that culture. It's like a mutually supportive system of the validation of things less than mediocre: that if a tiny number of the group can be elevated to great adulation by the masses, it somehow makes the masses feel like they are al
  13. Whoever it was that said scouting helps boys to become 'well-rounded' must have been thinking about the leaders, lol. That takes years and the well-rounded part starts around age 30 or so. The local college arranges academic schedules for athletes so that they have the 'heavy' courses out of season. In season the courses are more, let us say, 'flexible'.
  14. Well I was 'accepted' but here's a repeat of what I wrote back in the beginning in response to the unfriendly message the site posts to newcomers: "Wow, I just re-read the wording that describes how new members are 'accepted' and saw this: "This is mandatory for all new members to help us stop spamming and keep the forum clean of dirt!" ....or....'old' members (a.k.a. good ole boys) need not worry. That is more than just a little insulting to be 'scanned' by someone to find out how close to 'dirt' I am. It's the kind of welcome that smacks of 'sniffing out' undesirables like certain religio
  15. A motive that mattered in the mind (dare I say 'imagination'?) of the writer maybe. But I like the different narrative approach (I might even write it myself) although maybe I'll apply it selectively. There's just so much other good stuff in the versions we know so well already.
  16. I can sure tell you my #1 murder story of all time is when Salome was manipulated by Herodias and John the Baptist paid dearly. I can tell you there's more intrigue in that whole story than in all of the soaps combined...magnificent! #2 is for sure when Jael drove the tent peg through sleeping Sisera's head. Bravo! I think about her every time I lay my head down to sleep - with one eye open, lol. Forget all the genocides perpetrated against different peoples, these two are standouts of Biblical drama in my opinion.
  17. Catechism! I did that and I'm not Catholic. I can still recite most of it. Took a LOT less than a year too.
  18. OK. I can take a hint. I am now going to start working my way through the archives and see what other hidden gems there are. And then I will restart some old nugget of a thread but, in a time and manner of my choosing.
  19. OK, that makes more sense. They can mess with me if they want. As you say, I'll probably be oblivious to it.
  20. I did a search because I suspected this was a 'timeless' topic and sure enough: http://scouter.com/index.php/topic/14998-jungle-hammock-review-after-a-week-of-use/?hl=hammock and http://scouter.com/index.php/topic/14651-use-a-pillow-with-a-hammock/?hl=hammock and http://scouter.com/index.php/topic/14698-evolution-of-the-hammock/?hl=hammock and http://scouter.com/index.php/topic/25403-tent-vs-hammock/?hl=hammock You might want to consider restarting some of those old discussions as well.
  21. I placed all of my mother's pins that my mom had collected on her ribbon - over her heart before the casket was closed at her funeral. It was one additional way for me to honor everything she had done for me in my life.
  22. I don't get CCD out of Catholic Sunday school. I get CSS. You guys are just messin' with me aren't you.
  23. See, I'm new here and to me with my background CCD is 'charge-coupled device'. What is CCD?
  24. Aha!! Desertrat77! Great guy and no wonder your interest in the outdoors as well as your willingness to state your thoughts. You have a great dad. But I suspect you know that already. Welcome to the campfire from one newbie to another!
