  1. A woggle is a woggle. Part of the attitude of those adults that you had to deal with is part of what I have issue with woodbadge. Some people make such a big deal about Wood Badge that people that take the course are better scouters than others. Wood Badge is a good course, I know many people that have taken wood badge that take every short cut possible, and I know people that didn't that do more for scouting that is above and beyond what is expected. IMHO, the course has nothing to do about ones character and work ethic, it may just enhance the ethic on the good and bad side. I have
  2. Everyone needs to stop and think about what they are saying, would you say all this around the campfire? We are all scouters that give our time and have the best intentions. We all will scout in our own way and do our best, for the kids. I don't think I have seen people saying things incorrectly, we just all see things from different perspectives. A scout is kind.
  3. What was the project and what did they think was missing? Just wondering
  4. That bacon is overcooked..... 🙂 Great job on the meals
  5. I am not surprised. I think the first set of girls in the program have some very eager scouts that have been waiting to be able to start. I assume it will level itself out in coming years because it won't be the girls that have been waiting for the door to open up.
  6. I wonder if the scoutmasters performed CPR as well? In our unit we ensure that every adult leader and many of our older scouts are CPR/AED/First Aid trained and provided the opportunity to be wilderness first aid trained. I feel horribly for all those involved.
  7. Well, here in Texas that is easy to do. Minnesota, not so much. I know we have something scouting going on just about every weekend, so lots of opportunities..
  8. For various reasons some scouts advance very quickly to first class, some don't. A first class scout is a first class scout no matter what age or time served as long as they followed the requirements. Congrats to her and all the other first class scouts out there. I am assuming she drove it, not her parents or leaders. no reason to question it. Now my view of advancement is jaded, It is only one of the methods of scouting but seems to be the one everyone focuses on. In many respects, I think it is one of the lower ones just above uniform. From the sounds of her busy schedule it
  9. Sadly, your link takes me to a propaganda video that is anti-muslim. You might want to use the link in the other thread that was started earlier today. I am not a lawyer, but my assumption of liability would be limited unless the leader didn't something malicious. There would be an expectation that the leader was trained to the best of their abilities. This is why scouts should turn in the BSA activity release form prior to each campout and major activity. We used them as part of the checkin process for the scouts.
  10. I wanted to brag on our youth in our Sea Scout Ship. For the 5th year in a row they we chosen for the national Flagship fleet as on of the top units in the nation. This year, they were on of the top 4 units in the nation. We were first but were listed second of the four units. So I think it was 2nd 🙂 The kids had an awesome time and love the program.
  11. Agreed, I a a huge proponent of the scouts leading and me driving them to the start point. Especially at the Sea Scout level, they do everything other than driving to the destination.
  12. I am not sure how it is condescending. Scouts and buddies could certainly get lost. I am a big proponent of the scouts picking their shirts and colors. But there is a reason why clothing on runners, marine vessels, and others are high viz or reflective. It is to be spotted. I don't see how that is babysitting.
  13. Can I guess that you just finished with LNT training? I noticed you recently changed your profile pic. Bright colors are not offensive in the outdoors, weather or not you are a true outdoorsman or not. Scouts are not hunting and dressed in camo, they are youth that most likely offended the true outdoorsman by talking and laughing. And when you say naturlists, I believe that is a term used for nudists, which is probably more distracting to true outdoorsman. My point is, most people don't agree with you and no matter how much you berate everyone. Just dress the way you want and l
  14. Our Sea Scouts are on water so we have the opposite, we need to be seen by other boaters on the water. I don't agree with you on the not wearing bright colors in the backcountry. If a scout or scouts get lost in the backcountry, it would be easier to spot the day-glo scout shirts than earth tones. Are you saying you wear sexually suggestive T-shirts on the other 6 days a week? 🙂 Joking.
  15. I want you teaching the MB counselors at summer camps!
  16. Our Sea Scout Ship has Hi-viz orange. it serves a great visibilty purpose for us. We want to be visible on the water and places where we are helping. There aren't a lot of us so we need to stand out in a good way 🙂
  17. We did report it with zero action from them. In fact, they berated my daughter at the monthly meeting when they reviewed it next. That is when I stepped in and called them out and spoke up. They called me to apologize, and I told them to apologize to my daughter , which they didn't. I am happy it worked for you and I won't tell my daughter to not mentor the girls in the way that she sees based on her experience. The girls she mentors get to work with girls in engineering colleges to help make the world a better place.
  18. My daughter's experience along with many others is that the approval board is a bunch of women who are very political and catty. They provided almost zero feedback and where the bottleneck continually refusing her project with no clear communication and gaps of 4 weeks in between communications. My daughter just stopped because she had more important things to focus on like school and is now very happy at a top tier engineering college and mentors girls. She also based on her experience mentors them to not join girl scouts. In her opinion they are an organization around to make the girls s
  19. I have gotten requests to talk to reporters about this on TV this morning. I very quickly turned them down about pointed them to the press release from BSA. We have to all remember, we do not represent BSA in any official manner but can do inadvertent damage to the program by talking about the issue publicly without any real in-depth knowledge and specific background/training in the domain.
  20. that and the soap.... I do suggest drilling a few holes on the side so it doesn't become a mold trap as well.
  21. In many ways I agree whole heatedly with you. In general, people sign their kids up.... As an easy way to knock out several merit badges and the kids sit and watch. They can be good, but the responsibility leans on the director of the event to make sure to get the right instructors. Some instructors are great and the classes are great, the problem is you have no ability to advise the scout about which counselor to take. We all know some counselors that are amazing and others that just check off the merit badge. Both merit badges are equal but the experience is not the same. I have w
  22. I remember my son's first summer camp experience. He was in a hammock overnight and some other scout got a food package from home. A racoon stole the package and decided to eat right under the hammock. Freaked my son out and the other scout was upset at the other scouts for stealing his food.....
