You mean There was a jolly Dutchman, His name was Johnny Verbeck. He made the finest sausages And sauerkraut and speck. He made the finest sausages The world has ever seen, Till one day he invented A sausage makin' machine. Chorus: Oh, Mr. Johnny Verbeck How could you be so mean. I told you you'd be sorry for Inventing that machine. Now all the neighbors' cats and dogs Will never more be seen. They'll all be ground to sausages In Johnny Verbecks' machine. One day a boy came walking, He walked right in the store. He bought a pound of sausages And laid them on the floor. The boy began to whistle, He whistled up a tune. And all the little sausages Went dancing 'round the room. Chorus: One day the machine got broken. The darn thing wouldn't go. So Johnny Verbeck, he climbed inside To see what made it so. His wife, she had a nightmare And walking in her sleep, She gave the crank a heck of a yank And Johnny Verbeck was meat Thats one of my favorites

Although if you put your Lodge Flap on, you better have a good story to tell when the young ladies who attend the first nighter ask what they have to do to wear such a nifty patch

do you mean this song sung to the Ballad of the Green Berets? Ballad of an Eagle Scout Hiking Scouts go marching by, Cheerful boys who laugh and cry, Boys who mean just what they say, Make them Eagles all some day. Silver wings upon their chests, These are boys, America's best, One hundred boys will join the troop, But only three in the Eagle group. Trained to live off nature's land, Taught to build, and lend a hand, Boys who learn by nature's call, Courage from the Oath and Law. Silver wings upon their chests, These are boys, America's best, One hundred boys will join the troop, But only three in the Eagle group. Back at home a young mom waits, Her Scout is set to review his fate, He has just to pass this test, Leaving her this one request: Put silver wings on my son's chest, Make him one of America's best, He'll be a man they'll test him out, Have him be an Eagle Scout

Hey John D., Contact your local LDS church and tell them that you a non-LDS type person want to be an Assistant Scoutmaster in their Boy Scout troop and that you would love to have your wife be an ASM as well and see how long it takes for them to hang up on you.

Are we sure of our facts here? I only have a passing knowledge of industrial radiology, but I can tell you it is not easy to Xray a truck. Actually X-ray would be a misnomer as the outside of the truck would have to be covered with film and a radioactive source previously placed in the truck released from its protective, shielding shell. Thus the radioactivity would actually be gamma, not X-ray. (Gamma comes form the nucleus of an atom, X-ray comes from the orbital electrons) Then the film would have to be removed, processed and studied. And that's going to take much longer than 2 minutes each. I can see using all sorts of devices to search the trucks, but not xray

VentureScoutNY I very much disagree with your premise that the Catholic Church has lost any and all political and moral control. If you want, I can list all the catholic priests who have not sexually abused a child, but space would make that prohibitive. yes, the Catholic Church has had its share of problems in the past, but to dismiss it as no longer relevant is a colossal mistake. Unfortunately the Catholic Church suffers from a condition known to anything built by man, it has flaws, and it is trying to correct those flaws. To say it has lost moral control is an absolute untruth

Wait, hold on, and just a pea-pickin' minute. I am a long way from a staunch conservative as many on this forum can vouch, but I cannot let a mention of the Florida Election go by unchallenged. To my understanding, which may be faulty and I am open to challenge, all the independent organizations that did recounts of the florida presidential ballots all came up with George Bush as the winner. I am talking about private groups that recounted the ballots, not governmental entities. Yes, it was a close election but to lump it in with Wounded Knee does just such a huge misjustice to the those slaughtered that day as to make me faint. I can't say I have supported George W in all his moves, but the constant harping on how he got elected is pure sour grapes. Now, as to the topic at hand, I see no reason why a homosexual citizen has a less right to die for our country as my son, although I am not sure thats on topic either.

I don't see how you lump in Floridian Electtions with Wounded Knee, Teapot Dome, Watergate or Iran Contra. Actually I don't see how some of the aforementioned items relate to each other. I think this way way way over the top.

Again with the red berets? -
"It's when you find yourself saving toilet paper rolls, sorting dryer lint and scrounging broken candles that you know you have arrived as a Scouter " I thought it was when your plans for remodeling the bathroom was mainly composed of digging a deeper hole?

TO say nothing about the understandable damage to the tombstones that could have occured and I am sure the families of the departed would have been happy to know the final resting place of their loved one was being used by juveniles in the pursuit of good clean wholesome entertainment. Just the type of legacy we all want for the BSA

Eating a raw egg? Cut hands? I apologize, I guess looking for a skyhook would be fun, at least you were bleeding or in danger of contracting salmonella!

Skyhook, I am not quite sure where you got the opinion that all I do is complain; you will have to enlighten me on that one. And as far as sitting and griping, I am registered as a Troop Committee member, A Venture Crew Advisor, An Assistant District Commissioner-Venturing and past District Advancement Chair and am still serving on the District Advancement Committee. If I gripe, I certainly dont do it while sitting. This past weekend I served as Staff on a Scoutreach Campout held for our Council, Crew members and I helped teach knots, first aid, flag ceremonies, scout oath and law, woods tools and fire making. Then on Sunday at 4 I was at the council office attending the Council Venture meeting. And you know what? I am not singular in my activities; I know several leaders who do as much or more than I do. I shudder to think of Eamonn's or Bob White's schedule or a lot of people I cant think of right now. If you do a retrospective on my posts, you will see I am consistent in upholding the requirements, neither adding to or taking away anything. If that is being soft, I take full blame. As a Venturing leader I provided support on a Whitewater Trip to Maine where we had a two-day river trip as well as a high ropes course and outdoor climbing. Again, if the crew produces sissies, dont tell that to the four young ladies whose first whitewater trip (real class 3's) was last Sunday who want to do it again as soon as possible. Apparently you are well into adulthood and have formed your own opinions on what constitutes hazing and what is just having a good old time so I don't expect to change your mind. I think making sure a scout meets the requirements for every rank, meets the qualifications for every merit badge they earn goes a long way to giving the kids coping skills. If the scout doesnt swim 100 yards, the last 25 yards of which being done with the elementary backstroke and floating one minute, he doesnt become first class. Making kids work at known published goals in as safe as possible environment teaches coping skills. It teaches them how to work towards earning something. The scout program has numerous challenges built in it as it strives to accomplish its goals, you may find it tough to prepare a young person to make ethical choices over his lifetime by providing an environment of lies and humiliation where he can expect deceit from his leaders and learns its ok to torment the weak. When it says to pitch a tent and sleep in it, thats what the scouts in the troop do, and they are proud they set it up themselves, no matter how many attempts. Its meeting a requirement. If you think I am destroying the program, I would like to know more about your line of thinking. And if you think I am the type of person who caused Columbine, you are going to have to explain that a lot better. Many people home school for a variety of reasons, and while I am not an advocate of it, I am sure their childrens spelling and sentence structure isnt any worse than that of which you have displayed I do apologize to you if this thread took a different turn than you expected. Perhaps you wanted to be reminded of happier times, and exchange stories of the idyllic youth you had. People would share other fun times of searching for skyhooks and smoke benders and the fun they had. The problem is youth also read these forums and I cannot let any mention of hazing go by without condemning it. I have to let the youth know that I think its wrong, that many other adults think its wrong and there are some adults who have no problem tricking kids for their own amusement. If you want to send a kid for a walk at night, have him do his finding directions at night requirement. With a buddy (wink at Unc), dont send him after mythical objects. Make sure he meets the published requirements and you will have helped shape a citizen of character and one of personal fitness.

High gas prices hurting units?
OldGreyEagle replied to Eagledad's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Convince the PLC they should move the troop towards embracing Leave No Trace camping and soon you can sell that trailer to somebody else -
Its my understanding that a 19 year old ASM and a 21+ ASM could be in the same tent as they are both defined as adults by the BSA and its a Boy Scout event. Now, if that same 19 year old ASM is also registered in a Venturing Crew and the same 21+ ASM are on a Venturing Outing the following week end, then they cant be in the same tent for the Venturing Outing, OK one week but not the next

Huge Compilation of Scouting Resources on the Web
OldGreyEagle replied to Joni4TA's topic in Scouting the Web
Now this is what the net is for, thank you Joni4TA -
The troop I serve had only about 18 scouts when my son joined and I was called to its service. Kids started bringing their own tents because the troop didnt have enought as we grew from 18 to over 90 in less than 3 years. The troops money was going for stoves, coolers, water containers and tents were always placed on the back burner. By the time the troop statrted talking about tents, most families had them and wanted to keep them in use. We do have a motely selection of tents, but then new scouts always have a variety of styles to check out before they purchase one for themselves.
