  1. "The Scout must secure the prior approval of his unit leader, his unit committee, and the benefactor of the project. The project must also be reviewed and approved by the district or council advancement committee or their designee to make sure that it meets the stated standards for Eagle Scout service projects before the project is started. This preapproval of the project does not mean that the board of review will approve the way the project was carried out." That is from the latest Advancement Committee Policies and Procedures (BSA pub 33088).
  2. I frequently serve as the "district representative" to EBoRs. When I see such problems, I will always make sure that the Eagle Scout knows that issues like that should be corrected prior to the submission to National. (And privately speak to the Committee that these type of issues should have been caught prior to the EBoR.) When I am doing Eagle project reviews, it is one of the topics that I cover. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation ARE important. (This message has been edited by UCEagle72)
  3. As a commissioner, if I was doing a uniform inspection, it would have no effect on my scoring. Technically this is a "temporary insignia" - so a lot of latitude is available.
  4. Dweller -- When we showed up at the camp (for the week long program) - we were basically told -- "No phone calls, no letters, no radios. You are here to concentrate on your Scoutcraft skills, and learning how to be the best Scout leader you can be." Must say, they didn't catch me on too many Scoutcraft items, but, when it came to being a good leader, I learned many things that multiple military training courses had missed.
  5. Not sure where the stave came from, we sure did not have those when I attended in '83. As for stuffed animals - none of those, nor, women, or cubbers either. No computers, no cell phones, no DVDs, no VCRs, no projectors (well, we did see "Follow me Boys" and "Mr Scoutmaster" on a movie projector) -- just magic markers that kept drying up by the end of the week, and an audio cassette address from Bill Hillcourt. Of course, that *was* 27 years ago. I used to be a Beaver ('83), But I'll always be an Eagle ('72).
  6. The push to 2012 has been mentioned elsewhere, I do believe this is the first time it has been on the Training Updates page.
  7. The only push I ever received was from my SM through my mom. He went to the store where she worked and "ran into her." Ah yes, that Cooking MB partial was finished in two weeks. (And it was the ONLY thing left to do.) As SM I never pushed or prodded. Simply indicated the virtues of completing the program. Of course, that was back before the T-2-1 programs, so I was always most happy when my Scouts made First Class. My son made 1st Class and decided it just wasn't his "thing." If he could have, he would have stopped sooner, but I made 1st Class his goal, as that was the original to
  8. One of our local Packs, with two school nights, signed up 37 new Cubs!
  9. Stosh -- You did a much better job explaining this than I did - that's for sure. I guess I have done it so many times, it sometimes is second nature. And, yes, more than once I stuck the lid on too soon ... I think that seal is better than the super glue on the hard hat stuck to the steel beam ;-)
  10. My 1963 Scoutmaster's Handbook has been one of the best - especially when teaching the Patrol Method.
  11. Always good to have a local Eagle Project make the news and get some attention ... http://www.cfnews13.com/article/news/2010/september/148066/14yearold-helps-restore-ruined-cemetery And the video: http://www.cfnews13.com/video?clip=http://static.cfnews13.com/newsvideo/cfn/0907VinelandCemetery_090720100344.flv
  12. Moose -- I use block beeswax - and the DO needs to be warm enough to melt the wax (so really, a thin coat). Then I wipe down with a towel. Always leave the DO upside down on a rack to cool and collect any "droppings" on paper towel. (Same method as discussed in a previous thread ... can't remember when.) I just warm the DO back up, and thoroughly wipe out the DO when I am ready to use it. As previously mentioned - best way to "start" a DO after storage is to make donuts! And I have never met a Scout who won't eat a fresh, hot donut. (This message has been edited by UCEagle72)
  13. If you plan on storing your DO for any long-period, then consider "sealing" the DO with beeswax before storage. This has always worked for me, and I have a 50+ year old DO that is frequently in storage for 6 months at a time.
  14. 40 years later, I still call my Scoutmaster "Mr. B" -- while I have cohorts who call him by his first name, I just can't bring myself to do that.
  15. Bryant -- Does this interface with ScoutNet? What makes this better than an app like PackMaster which already has those features? Inquiring minds want to know!
  16. Trust me ... good Commissioners who care about their units, and what to be certain they get the straight poop read almost everything!
  17. I heard the delay was due to BSA Legal reviews. But that the 2009 edition was still to be used.
  18. When your Eagle application is submitted all records are validated at Council - and that is before you send off your request for letters, your Scoutmaster Conference, and Board of Review.
  19. Hey Moose ... Welcome from another member of the Central Florida "gang" (yes there are a few of us around here). Kick back, relax, and enjoy the virtual campfire -- the skeeters here are not nearly as bad as at La-No-Che! I used to be a Beaver ('83), But I'll always be an Eagle ('72).
  20. These should be in your TroopMaster database, which syncs with ScoutNet. If someone at your Troop cannot help, then talk to your Unit Commissioner, or the District Executive, they should be able to help you out.
  21. All revised publications are being reviewed by BSA Legal -- which is why we have a year old Advancement Committee pub 33088.
  22. I was active in my local OA Lodge & Chapter until I was 20, and enlisted. All while being a UC. While there were times when I saw conflicts (I was a "Clan Chief," which was a grouping of Chapters, that Mi-Gi-Si O-Paw-Gan tested in the mid-70s, and a Lodge Chairman) between District events and Lodge events, I always managed to work out what would be the "best place" to spend my time. (Let's see - drink coffee with the old men in red coats, or go dancing and drumming and do an induction?) It wasn't always that easy (and priorities do change as you get older) but I did those thin
  23. (1) Provide him the contact information for a new MBC. (2) Ask the Scout to first contact the assigned MBC to determine his availability before you will assign him a new MBC. (3) While not forbidden, MBCs can work with their own children (See Advancement Committee Policies and Procedures BSA pub 33088 - page 13), our Troop policy was to always use an MBC other than the parent, unless no other MBC was available. (This is where having a good stable of MBCs at the District level can come in quite handy.) "Cherry-picking" MBCs is nothing new (heck, I probably used the same MBC for 5+ MBs
  24. Greetings and welcome! In addition to all the "required" training (both online and in-person) for Unit Commissioners - I encourage you to take the training that is required for the volunteers you will provide Unit Service for. And don't skip little things like "Troop Committee Challenge." Even take training like Safety Afloat, and Safe Swim -- make sure you understand what the Guide to Safe Scouting says, so you can help your units deliver a quality & safe program for the young men. I encourage you to purchase a copy of the "2010 Boy Scout Requirements" book - and read and revi
  25. Also, for best success, you need to be using Internet Explorer 7 (or IE8 in compatibility mode). Sorry to say that ... but ... it is true.
