  1. Ahhh ... the pamphlet & MB design for Geocaching were announced today ... http://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2010/10/design-of-geocaching-merit-badge-pamphlet-released.html I have also managed to get a copy of the JTE standards for Ships - http://www.box.net/shared/y1bl1k2ocm Apparently, the standards for Teams have not been released (per an email from National).
  2. Can your success be done by your typical one hour a week volunteer? Sure, as long as you only take a one hour break from Scouting per week! :-)
  3. Maybe this is why Scouting in the UK "moves the scouts along" to Explorers at 14 so they are in a program with Scouts aged 14-18. However, I have heard Scout leaders in the UK say that most younger boys (11-14, those in the Scouting program) are not ready to "lead their own program."
  4. "In the olden days" our participant necker was green, with a brown embroidered axe in the log. I still have mine, can't remember the last time I wore it!
  5. Hey, I understand RipVanScouter ... I came back to Scouting after taking a few years off, and my DE asked me to run the Cub Family Camp -- I looked at him and reminded him, he could have been one of my Cub Scouts! (Near the end of my three year tenure as CM.) BTW - did most of my "scouting" in the old Detroit Area Council, Sunset District. (This message has been edited by UCEagle72)
  6. Clemlaw -- Trust me ... *lots* of us here remember the "no outing in Scouting" debacle that started in 1972. I was fortunate to finish my Eagle under the old requirements.
  7. Kudu ... My "guess" ... one of my favorites: "The badges which accompany his advancement and which the Scout wears on his Uniform are not to show that he has "passed certain tests." There should be no past tense implied! On the contrary, each badge cries out "I can, right now and here!" The badge of rank worn by a Scout is like the M.D. sign on a doctor's door. It advertises to the world that "Here lives a man who is prepared to help sick people." So must the First Class Badge advertise to the world that here is a boy who is qualified to help others as well as take care of
  8. That option has been around for a while ... but ... it is fun to go and attend some trainings from time-to-time - even if you know all the skills. I have been attending training classes I taught for several years - just so I can see what changed (like Patrol Method not being taught in SM/ASM Fundamentals ... replaced with "working with youth" and the EDGE method). I only have a couple of additional classes until I have completed all the training for all registered positions. Been a good refresher.
  9. Excellent video for parents ... I have not seen anything from National that covers the topics of the diverse programs, and volunteering, anything like this.
  10. In case you are wondering, "Hiking with Green Bar Bill" first appeared in the October, 1932 edition of Boy's Life.
  11. Since there have been only three courses thus far, I think finding participants on this forum will be difficult. Now, I do know a local Commissioner (ACC-Venturing) who attended, maybe that is the best way to find out ... check with your Council to see if anyone locally has attended.
  12. MaryJ and '92 -- If BL ever wanted to publish a collection of all the GBB articles, they could probably find something that most any of us would buy. I know they have just released the "best of" collection for the whole magazine, but, I think a collection would serve a much larger audience, make great material for SM minutes, and hopefully inspire some of our current youth leaders to "step up" a bit more.
  13. Welcome to the virtual campfire. Pull up a log and grab a stick, skeeters ain't too bad. I finished my Eagle under the "old program" ... and I consider myself very fortunate. My old Council, gone -- my district, well, they are in the process of merging those so we'll see what happens. But my Troop is still around and my last SM is still doin' the job 40 years later. But I am down here in Floor-a-dee now, so I can only watch those things from afar, and every once in a while, head "up north" for a Court of Honor. My concerns are local!
  14. Eagle at 14, I can live with (after all, I was one at 14 ;-). As long as they stay active. Heck, after I finished my Eagle, I went to Philmont, earned my God & Country, 30 more merit badges, attended the '73 East Jambo (saw Bill Hillcourt, in person, for the first time), worked on summer camp staffs, and was active in OA at the Chapter, Clan, and Lodge level. I "passed" on being SPL, so a Life Scout could use that for his leadership requirement (we had far fewer POR that counted in those days) and became a JASM. When Leadership Corps started, that was my "patrol." (And we wore th
  15. Nah ... Green Bar Bill's column was my favorite ... but Whitlin' Jim was up there in order of importance.
  16. This is really very simple ... let's go back to the 1936 "Handbook for Scoutmaster's" that Green Bar Bill wrote, and look at what he said on advancement: "The badges which accompany his advancement and which the Scout wears on his Uniform are not to show that he has 'passed certain tests.' There should be no past tense implied! On the contrary, each badge cries out 'I can, right now and here!' The badge of rank worn by a Scout is like the M.D. sign on a doctor's door. It advertises to the world that 'Here lives a man who is prepared to help sick people.' So must the First Class
  17. but nobody's posted the Unit ones yet Still working on getting a copy Bart. You'd think that with our re-charter packets being handed out in two weeks we'd have these already!
  18. Well -- there was no "buying" of the land involved ... it was a gift to the BSA.
  19. In Europe, they still tend to tie their neckerchiefs in a knot instead of using a slide. Yup ... and they use a "Friendship Knot" and not a square or overhand knot ...
  20. Down here, we will hand out the re-charter packets in two weeks -- October 2010. An Eagle Scout "advances in rank" by earning Palms, one for each additional 5 merit badges (above the 21 needed for Eagle) and three months of service to the Unit. (Bronze-5, Gold-10, Silver-15, Silver & Bronze-20, Silver & Gold-25, Two Silver-30, etc.)
  21. I concur with the rest - (1) YP issues are private, and (2) this should have absolutely no affect on his EBoR, or his eligibility for Eagle.
  22. The Pack Meeting in front of the boys is probably the best -- however, I have seen quite a few presented at District Roundtable meetings.
  23. I have managed to obtain a copy of the District program. Still working on getting a copy of the unit level program. http://www.box.net/shared/c8pnuvy1c1
