  1. interesting thread. I think we are hovering someplace around 50 boys currently since the Web2's crossed over. To my inexperienced eye, it's a size that works well. Any larger would be too much I think. I have no feel at all for how many Tigers we'll have next year, but I guess it will be on the order of what we had this year so the pack will grow slightly. My son's Tiger den this year was a bit too big in my opinion with 14 on the roster, but it has worked out like a much more realistic sized active den might. Two are registered but have not been active, and most of the others are
  2. Now I haven't read all 8 pages of this post, do I appologize f this post is redundant.... What I have seen is a discussion of sheath knives beeping banned. I was hurt much more as a kid with a non-locking folder than any fixed blade. When learning knife safety, I would think it better to teach basics with a fixed blade.... One less danger to worry with.
  3. Thanks Eagle for posting that presentation. This thread is interesting and applicable to me. I just recently stepped up to be assistant den leader. (well I volunteered around about Christmas but it never went anwhere, untill I approached my son's DL and CM at the Blue & Gold in Februrary. Anyway, I still feel like I'm getting my footing.... I just recently sent a message to our district to learn more about baloo and any other traing I might attend..... I've already done all of the on-line stuff for this year's Tiger and next years Wolf.

  5. Interesting idea. I just bought the official nametag and wore it to our last pack meting of the year. Several leaders commented on it, and suggested we might think about it for all leaders next year. I do see your point though, about it falling off with backpacks or high activity. I like the idea of embroidered or sewn on. based on "the guide though, I too would suggest white lettering on black to match the "official plate".... although i think that some color on tan(shirt color) would look better. I also think that first and last names look less "military" than last name only.
  6. To the orginal poster's question.... unfortunatly I don't have a lot of miles on it yet, but I just started in leadership and bought the microfiber uniform shirt. I was a bit worried about how well it will hold up..... seems like it would have a tendancy to get 'picked' a lot. (like in a briar patch, there would be threads pulled out all over the place....). I have been told that they hold up well. I can confirm that it is comfortable and looks good. Re Def Scouter's point of difficulty sewing patches on. I was able to do it without much trouple on the microfiber, but do recognize
  7. What's the idea behind those columbia shirts? They don't look like uniform shirts, so are they meant jsut for casual wear?... ....an alternative to pack activity T-shirts?
  8. cubscouttracker.com Anyone using it? I searched and only found one posted question with one posted answer.... Instead of refreshing that thread, I thought I'd start a new one with the specific subject in the title.
  9. I'm sorry I know this is basic, but I'm new.... What exacly is scoutNET? I'm gathering that it's BSA's online database, nut is it something that I as an Assistant Den Leader could or need to use in tracking my den? I don't get the idea that our committe is very much on-line and up to date with the tech side of things....
  10. As I read through this thread, I was thinking how great the lesson potential is for the other scouts that don't have exposure to these things, to learn how to deal with them..... .... but also i was thinking that it's a real shame that the other boys would have to so severly alter their diets and actions.... no trail mix, no PB&J, no snickers bars..... at the risk of using an 'f' word I don't like, it's not really 'fair' to the other boys.... Someone suggested that the troop be educated, but not by the parents. I was thinking the same thing. I know not realistic, but wouldn't i
  11. My son's Tiger DL used to in the beginning of the year, then a time or two one of the other moms brought something... The last bumch of meetings they've done nothing. From the perspective of a parent, and now ADL, I'd just assume not. It seems more trouble than it's worth. The boys like to run around and play after the meeting and I think they could take it or leave it.
  12. Thanks! I actually tried both of those, twice..... Like my mom used to always say, "if it were a sanke, it would have bitten me!" I actually like the feature, but one thread in particaulr is running on and on. I think it'll go to couples counseling soon, & I just don't need the full email box of reminders.
  13. How would I go about turning off emails every time someone posts to a thread?
  14. I'm a Tiger Cub dad and a new ADL. I just recently posted about a higher standard of excelence needed..... I'm observing a similar approach in my den. It's a big reason what i stepped up to be ADL. I hope that I can teach my son the personal integrity to not accept a free ride..... I do feel though that the situation is very sticky and don't want to 'insult' that current leadership isn't doing it right. How to politely steer.... that is our question.... I understand your frustration!
  15. employee at Legland..... good one! Now that you mention it.....
  16. Oh great, now I have some homework to do..... thanks! I wonder if our local FD would do anything like that. I'll also have to look to see if something like this could count as a go see it for Wolf den next year.....
  17. Just reading another thread and it raised a question for me.... I have just started late in the year as Assistant Den Leader in my son's Tiger den. Moving to Wolf next year as assistant DL. We haven't used the Denner concept at all..... basically, our Dl has done it all with help from paraents taht are willing to step up durring the meeting. My question: How many of you don't use Denner's, and why? ..... or maybe the question is should I suggest to the DL that we start using Denners?
  18. I see lots of mention in this threads and similar, of the current uniforms not being "practical", or "serviceable", or whatever..... What's not practical about a button down shirt (especially microfiber) and cargo pants? Plenty of pockets for 'stuff', so that aint it.... I got the relaxed fit switch backs.... plenty comfortable, so that aint it.... My son hasn't complained or had any issue with his uniform, except the necker slide falling off when he's running around after the meetings..... one quick adjustment of the tabs, and problem solved....
  19. Iteresting 2nd post by Winton while I was typing.... That Austrailian uniform is close to what I have imagined for what many call a 'Class B' or activity shirt. (Isuppose the Canadian and British versions are too, but I just didn't see them with any flag, district, rank, or award indicators....) I don't like it for a replacement of the more traditional, but worn complete with similarly styled uniform pants, hats, etc... I very much like taht Austrailian uniform as a casual version for activities and outings! Call it an activity uniform & I'm all for it!
  20. I think it's interesting that the photos in both of those sites don't show much by the way of insignia or patches on the uniforms. Clicking around in the Canadian site, I see that they use them. Why aren't they shown? Personally, I see absolutely nothing wrong with "traditional". I guess I'm a stuffy middle aged conservative..... But based on the pride my 6 year old shows when he wears his Tiger Uniform, he doesn't see anything wrong with it either! I think scouting will loose much of it's appeal if it goes the way of nonconformity, or by the same token, to "less traditional"
  21. I agree with what Beavah wrote earlier.... I imagine that it wasn't being done in a dangerous fashion at all. Likely over next to the woods where nobody was running around, etc.... Regardless, bad taste? Very likely yes? The dad very likely didn't consider that it was against the rules, etc...
  22. I like the idea of getting the cubs active. Our pack usually provides the food for a nominal 'per family' fee, and some of the leaders do the cooking, usually on a large tow behind grille. At one campout where that grille wasn't allowed, we did the foil packet meals. Basically set up a cafeteria style line with adults inserting what ingrediants the cubs wanted.... think Morrison's Cafeteria on a pic-nic table.... An adult did all of the assembly and folding of the pouches. Then some of the leaders threw them on some small grilles to cook. It was a good idea, but due to activity
  23. another bunch of good points..... Scoutfish said, "They are not of the ability to go beyond what their parents & DL will lead them in." That's exactly my concern, that the expectations and precedents are now set low.... but then as you say, set the bar higher and higher.... a progression. I'm starting to get that point. I need to think about how broach the topic with the DL. I think that her bar is set to this low expectation.... Also, your points about the boys missing out if go see its are skipped...... I see this as a big driver to interest in the program.... excitement
  24. ..... ah but upon closer look, they still don't make it easy. That page doesn't list some others that I've stumbled across in my search, such as attendance pins, summer activity awards, etc..... My search continues......
  25. .... and just like that, there it is! Google let me down...... Thanks Old Grey One!
