Maybe I'm still just confused by the new site and my "need" is here someplace....... I'd like to be able to view a headline list of thread topics, that I have not seen..... say since my last log-in. When I've read any that I choose and skip over any that don't interest me, I would like to be able to mark all threads as "read" If a new post is made in any topic, it becomes "un-read" Then my next login will show all the topics taht i have not seen.... i.e my "un-read" topics.

I'm not going to address each point of the proposal, but can't resist one.... why limit rounds in a clip to 10? why not 9? why not 11? No good reason for it, eh? It's a number picked out of the air. Any law or rule that is grounded in something like that, needs to go right back where it started..... thin air. Just my opinion....

agreed BUT on the other hand... if they receive a bar for one year of perfect attendance, that would be what they have to hang on the wall with all of their other Cub Scout awards and acheivements.... but it would seem silly (to me anyway) to be proud of a one year perfect attendance, knowing that I had 4 years or whatever.... Makes that one year award equally meaningless, IMO. I have been struggling with this same issue. Have had bigger fish to fry and so I haven't had a chance to bring it up to our committee yet.... Our pack does not currently use the attendance award or service stars. My son had almost perfect attendance for his Tiger year to all meetings, camps, and activities excpt one "excused" miss from a den meeting. i asked the den leader to look into it last year for the last pack meeting, but it fell through the cracks. Ditto this year on his attendance, almost but one sick miss for a den meeting and one miss on a camp that I couldn't make. Part of me wants to suggest some critera of maybe all den meetings, all pack meetings, and maybe some percentage of camps and activities, with an allowance for "excused" (by prior call that he won't be making it because .... but if we did that, as I mentioned above, it would almost be meaningless unless we could make it apply for each boy going back to their start with the pack. I'm not sure if the den leaders ahve good enough attendance records for that. I think I might be the only one taking attendance. At this point, I think I'm going to start our den with the service stars, but maybe I'll skip the attendance pin unless soemone else brings it up. The boys don't know about it and honestly I'm not so sure that they care.....

have camped there a couple times with the cubs. Looked at the tree houses, but have never stayed in them. They are in a nice littel fenced in compund close to the dining hall and chapel. I seem to remember seeing some small holes in the screens that may give a bit of problem with bugs in the summer..... We did stay in very similar tree houses at a nearby camp, that used to be a GS camp but is now operated by the county. I think the Camp Shands houses were a bit bigger and nicer, and certaily cleaner. It's a nice novelty. There's water in the lake, but the level is way down. I would think that the water stuff wouldn't be that good. They do have a nice climbing /repelling wall there. As previously mentioned, it's a long run into town.

I guess I didn't really ask a question..... Do you have a source for these? The ones I saw (and would like)were black, white lettering in one line with Fleur to match the regulation tags, and as mentioned were small enough as to not look military or tacky. Really, i would think that a background with an exact match to the shirt (either tan or blue) might look better, but I'm willing to want to stick as close as possible to the regulation BSA tags

old topic I know.... Our pack just camped the USS Yorktown. There was a troop there with sewn on embroidered tags. very sharp I thought. On boys and leaders. I asked a leader, who said they were close to a military base and "had an in".... These were not nearly as big as the miliary strips and looked much nicer I thought for scouting, I'm guessing 3/4in wide max with maybe 5/8in letter height. Black strips with the fleur & first and last names all in line, to mimic the official BSA tags. I'm not sure about putting them on the Cub uniforms, but i think it would be nice for the leaders..... Re. the BSA magnetic one..... what do I think about them? If anyone ever finds mine, please let me know!

Haven't had to deal with the devices yet, but i was wondering if the pin could be peened over on the back side so taht it's permenantly installed without the little torture point on the back?

Regular long pants, not the switch backs.... I noticed that the size selection for the youth pants online is very limited, and the store was also almost out of stock a few weeks ago. The lady working the store said that they are going away in favor of switchbacks. I hope someone from the BSA is reading.... I'm pro uniform, but I have asked my wife to keep her eye out for some blue school uniform pants for my son. He needs some long pants for cooler weather. I bought switchbacks at the beginning of his Tiger year last year. Bought the smallest size. Never hemmed them as they were already too short, while the waist was huge on him. Adjusted them down and they served ok untill now. They are no just too short as pants, but still offer him plenty of room to grow in the waste. And as shorts, they are still too long. (& to qualify, he's not some disportionate freaky kid..... his height and weight rankings put him big for his age but correctly proportioned height to weight.) I have a pair of switchbacks for myself, and hate them. The zipper is in just the wrong place on the knee, and this makes them very uncomfortable in either role.... They are just a confused garment in my opinion..... they are pants..... they are shorts..... but they do neither job very well.

That's a great idea! Will scoutstuff customize the little ones with Pack name/number? I have a friend who has a direct to garment printing business. He can print any image onto a T-Shirt with dye in a special printer. I'll bet he could print a small flag if he had the image, no problem. I have no idea what it would cost though.

Well this is interesting..... if part of his award requirement is to assist or recruit into the troop, our chief will be a long time going, since we are only half way through the Wolf year.

great input so far. thank you! I'll look for the Den Chief book when i go to the scout strore this weekend. I never thought to look. I am planning on sitting through the online BSA Den Chief training myself ASAP, and encourgae our DC to do it as well. So I'll probably learn this in the online training, but what are the requirements exactly for the Den Chief award that some of you mentioned above? Is it one year of service? We are getting started with this now, halfway through the year, so do you think that's going to be a problem that i should be aware of moving forward? I understand that this will help him fill an office requirement for the Troop. What are the requirements there?

As an Assistant DL and Assistant CM, I've been trying to get a Den Chief position filled for a while now. Finally had an older brother of one of our Wolf cubs step up from a neighboring troop. He's the son of one of our 'old guard' Den Leaders. Our DL is on the way out (moving) so we haven't done a good job of bringing him into the fold yet, but the last meeting was the first I've seen him show up at.... he was not in uniform, wearing a leather jacket and shades, indoors and at night..... Another thread suggested sending problem boys from a troop to fill the DC position. Made me think of our issue..... so to my question. Those of you taht use Den Chiefs, how do you bring him into the fold? how to you utilize him? I want to work with our new DL to make this thing work for the den, the cub scouts, and for the Boy Scout..... I think this could be a good thing if we get it started in a good way. So far, we haven't.

Yeah, but the vests would get worn less often even than the uniforms do here in Florida. The issue of putting things on the sash seems to me anyway, to stem from the desire to take pride in experiences and accomplishments. I think a patch jacket is a cool idea, in cooler climates where it could get some wear time. I've seen other organizations where the old timers would have jackets full of patches.... The EAA for example, where members get a patch for every fly-in or convention they attend. Each patch has the event name and the year.... They used to have contests at the conventions for the most patches or whatever.... or the navy flight jackets where they collect cruise patches The blanket idea seems silly to this former scout, as does the frame. Not something that a boy would diplay or be able to show much.... Gauch or not, I think back to when I was a boy, and I think that I would have liked to display a lineage.... take pride in my experience and accomplishments. that's part of the point of the uniform, isn't it? Maybe just me, but if the rules were changed, I don't think that it's inapropriate at all for a boy scout to display a series of cuboree patches or whatever.....

Cub scout dad and leader here. I think you are correct, not much desire to wear the uniform properly. Part of it I think is due to the conflicting or sketchy rules or traditions in place. But a bigger part I think, is the desire to change the definition of 'proper' to fit the indivdual's wants or needs. Re the subject of the thread, I persoanlly see no reason why a boy would want to display old rank patches at all. Makes no sense. I can however see the desire to display old temporary patches, event patches, etc... Not so much the generic non-descript patches that they are given without dates or names (like pinewood derby, or fire station tour), but the more custom ones they get from attending a special event or trip. My son is just starting his journey, but already, he has a temp patch or two that he has no good place to display.... His Cub O Ree campout from last year for example.... Many of the cub scout patches and achievements could very well be carried over to boy scouts to show the long term achievements and commitment to the program. I might lobby the BSA for a change, but unfortunately it is not part of the program now, therefore i would not personally encourage or condone it.

I'm looking into getting our Pack trailer fitted out, and thought of the first aid kit. What we have now is very thorough but a bit informal looking. We have several physicians and nurses in the pack, and they can perform minor surgery with it, yet at a Cuboreee last year we were slapped for not having a proper kit. Actually kind of laughable, but there is a good point in there about having a readily identifiable 'proper' kit.... My questions: What constitutes a proper kit for BSA? What sort of kit or cabinet do you have for your pack? Since we are a pack and doing mostly plop / car camping our needs could be a bit different form a troop that might be going back country. I'm thinking a semi-portable cabinet that would mount or hang inside the door of our trailer for easy access, but that could also be hung on the outside of the trailer during camp so it is out and visible, or maybe even taken along in cases that we don't bring the trailer or if an accident occurs away from the trailer....

I just wish that I could get the 'required' training I need when I'm available to take it. Our pack is short on BALOO trained leaders. I tried all summer to find a class to take, no luck. Then as I figured, fall rolls around and there starts to be a few offerings for classes in the council, but now I'm busy with pack trips, school stuff, etc.... and don't have time to attend. I've been reasonably outdoorsy my whole life, so I'm confident that i know the basics, but as with everything, nobody ever really knows all that there is to know about a subject.... there's always a different angle, or a different idea to consider..... so I'm open to outdoor training. I actually thin taht some good outdoor training would be fun..... an adventure really. As previously mentioned some of that "go out in the woods with a pocketknife and a necker" stuff....

Consellor, Coordinator.... all symantics in this context anyway. The religious medals really have very little to do with BSA, since the BSA is not a (enter your religion here) organization. These are a function of the church. From what I have read, BSA's only envolment is to carry the handbooks in the council store, and to give guidlines on how to wear said medals &/or knots on the uniform. I didn't attend so I'm only relaying what I have heard from her and what I have seen by reviewing the written materials... but the course, by the Catholic Diocese, covered all three areas of scouting. Again, a church function, not a BSA function.....
