Just wanted to bump this thread to see if anyone found a source. I want a sewn on fabric name strip to mimic the "official BSA plate" Fleur De Li and name, white on black, letter geight approx 1/4in and the strip approx 1/2in high All the Military type strips seem to be 1inch high with big letters. I did find one place that had the option for 3/8in letters, but they won't do the Fleur De Li. Anyone know a ready source, perhaps online, besides going to the embroidery place in the mall?

Seems to me as all together too much trouble. I'd just pick up a new one for "daily wear"..... If you like the vintage thing, then do some of these suggested tweaks so you can wear it for "special occasions"

CS uniform, but most are wearing the tan uniform as WEBELOS webelos necker and shoulder loops removed by CM or DL before climbing on bridge. SM from his new troop stops him half way across the bridge and asks a question.... such as "name something you learned that will help you in Scouting." Then as he steps off the bridge, the PL/scouts put on his new necker and loops

I think if done "up front" as jablake mentions it's ok...... but I don't think it's so good to spend the money up front. Our pack collects pack dues at the start of the year, and then the den leaders can submit receipts for re-imbursements.... Well, the dues go mostly for awards, t-shirts, etc... and the fundraising money chips into that for misc expenses..... anyway, my point is have a conversation with your committee chair or cub master.

ahhh.... tie..... umm, no thanks. Do the pants have cargo pockets? That aint for me! But thanks for the idea though. It's a great idea, for the other guy!

Thanks all! Scoutnut, we are not at all interested in starting another troop.... but your answer does help to explain the hierarchy or "structure". thank you. In our case.... I spent a few minutes looking to confirm if my daughter's daisy unit is the same troop # or different form that of the older girls. The older girl's troop has ZERO online presence as far as I can tell. My gut is telling me though, that this Daisy troop is formed under the same troop number as the older girls, and that would explain why it seems that the other leader is being considered "senior" or "in-charge" Anyway, thanks.

Separate sounds good to me scoutergipper, but I don't see that happening. Baryy, I like your suggestion. I think I'll drop a hint about it to our WEBELOS 1 leader to see what he thinks. the AOL portion isn't a huge chunk of the day, but separating it out, would perhaps help to streamline the other stuff..... as it was done this year anyway. I have no doubt that the current leadership core will balk at the idea since they seem to get locked into things..... you know, "THIS, is how it's done!"

Yes, all true. I agree with what is said about uniforming, setting the example, and all of that. I guess my real question though is more concerning how much time is spent by the average CC at meetings.... not the committee mtgs, but the troop meetings or outings with youth in attendance Our pack's CC is the Scoutmaster. He runs the committee mtgs which we typically hold separate from the boys, and not in uniform since it's done after work one evening during the week..... but the program is run by the CM, ACM, and DL's there's really no need for him to be around. he does visit on rare occasion, wearing his SM shirt.... but that's all. Since I'm a pack person, and the troop is newly.... well let's say "refurbished", I have no troop model to build off of. I have no memory of a troop CC in my short time in scouting as a youth many moons ago. So, for those of you with smooth running troops with good CC relationships, how much direct involvement does the typical CC have with the youth? How often do they visit the meetings?

Too timely that this thread pops back up today. ~~Many of the comments above in this thread are spot on! My oldest daughter is in a new Daisy troop this year. Lots of drama already. My wife hit me up just yesterday with a frustration, and question from the leader. My daughter wants to invite her friend from school as a guest to a "have-fun" meeting that they are holding at my house. It seems that the leader was under the impression that since they meet at, and are therefore part of the church, that members would have to be both Catholic, and members of the parish. She was under the impression that we boys were operating under the same restrictions. She was also concerned about not being covered by the GS insurance (heard that one a few times before, eh?) & wants the visitor to come only to a "real" meeting when it's held back at the church. I contacted her, letting her know that it's quite the opposite...... in fact, I said, I look at scouting as a ministry arm of the church first and foremost. That we want to invite new people in. It gets them in the door.... and their parents too! Also pointed out that it is not at all uncommon for BSA and GSA units to meet in homes, and therefore nothing unusual about bringing visitors in as prospective members. So now, she seems more open to letting newcomers and non-Catholics in (the friend is catholic though), but says that the friend is still not welcome at the "have-fun" meeting at our house. So my questions to you - We have a troop at our church of older girls. That leader seems to be acting as a CO rep for the Daisy troop. I think they are using the same troop number, but I'm not sure.... Anyway, how is the structure or hierarchy set up with the GSA? Is there and equivalent to the Chartered Org.? Is there a Chartered Org Rep? Not that she wants to by any stretch of the imagination.... but theoretically, could my wife or someone else start a parallel daisy troop at the church, assuming of course the church gave permission to use facilities? I'm just trying to understand the structure..... I know earlier posts say there is none, but there must be some sort of structure or process leading back to the GSA council, right???

That sounds like a nice B&G to me. If done right, I can see how the boys would have fun with some of that.

all true, except that the a patch goes straight to a drawer. There's no wearing it or displaying it, except for those "temporary patches" that hang from a button. ....at least in florida where it's too hot for the majority of the time to wear a vest or jacket....

Back story: I'm the ACM for my son's pack. Really acting more like a general committee member, chairman, secretary, paperwork pusher and communications chair.... not so much CM stuff. I might be defaulted into the CM role next year even though I don't see that as a personal strength.... Anyway my son & I were talking about options as he gets older in scouting...... it was all him, not me leading the conversation.... He understands that he can roll into boy scouts after webelos, but he was asking me ho long he can stay in scouts, all about the ranks up to eagle, etc........ and I was explaining it, and also telling him about the option for venturing, troop structures, boy led, and all of that.... At some point he says to me that he wants me to continue doing what I'm doing, "being a leader", as he crosses over. Gotta say that made me happy. but I secretly wondered if he's say the same thing in a couple years.... OK, so my CO's Scout Master has asked me to sign on as CC for the troop. he's the pack's CC and we are trying to strengthen the tie between the parish's units. So, as I'm just starting to get into this role..... Is there much need in my getting a troop shirt? and my more long term question.... If I stay in that role when my son crosses over, how much involvement does the typical troop cc have in troop activities? Beyond the committee meetings and paperwork, do some CC's get involved with troop camping trips, meetings, etc...?

Just had our B&G over the weekend. After mass for Scout Sunday, It was a long day! This is the 3rd I've attended with this pack. more about the graduation and crossover of the WEBELOS2 boys.... and not at all about the rest of the pack. This really bugs me. Since I might maybe be taking over as CM next year, I want to try and turn the ship's course.... even just a little. I've read here that some of you actually hold the crossover separate from the B&G. I like that idea, but don't think that's realistic in the short term anyway. Pack is too vested in this idea I think, and since many of the same leaders that did it this year are still with us as the active core of the group through a couple more years with younger sons.... Also, splitting the event would mean planning two meetings. It's hard enough for us to get folks to do one! Historically, our WEBELOS 2 den is in charge of the B&G. Either the leader or some of the moms pull it together. In the past, there has always been some sort of entertainment at least. This year nothing. They didn't even allocate time for the other den leaders to pass out awards..... so the few that had them coming will have to wait until our next pack get together which is the derby. Anyway, I think that even the Webelos2 boys were bored to tears through much of it. It was nice and touching..... for the moms...... but if you ask me they lost site of the boys. We had 20 minutes or so of jaw yapping by leaders at the mic then line up for a catered lunch.... then maybe 30-40 minutes of having the webelos 2 boys up on the stage, the meaning of the arrow and each of the rays of light....kudos to the mom that helped as an un-official den leader. Handing out passed due awards to the webelos 2 boys, then handing them their nice arrow of light plaques, blah, blah, blah.... Then outside for the flaming necker stunt then the rope bridge ceremony performed by the visiting BS troops. then back in for closing ceremony..... oh, and cake was in there some place. Understanding that entertainment and awards for the younger boys would drag it out even longer than the already painful day we have.... If I end up defaulting to CM next year, how might I fix it, even just a little? I really want to steer at least a little focus back to the idea of the Pack's Birthday and to the other boys.

bagss also makes an interesting point. I always thought it weird that the boys can wear the easy award, but the award that has some element to be proud of is useless because there's no built in way to wear it.
-
Basement makes a good point..... many are a complete joke, and the boys surely know it. For example if the bb had some sort of requirement for proficiency or improvement, then it would be a challenge and something to be proud of wearing. But, given that we can only shoot at the BSA range and those places are zoos during the district camps, there is no way to "officially" get any practice beyond the dozen or so shots they get in the time allowed.

Camping Merit Badge - Front Country vs. Back Country Camping
blw2 replied to delway's topic in Advancement Resources
Stosh Is your Godfather still with us? If he is, please encourage him to record his story. Help him write a book. Interview him on video. something.... please. If he's not with you any longer, did he leave any memoirs? Write a book about him. Stories like his are becoming more rare by the day. -
yeah, I'm starting to actually wonder what a venture crew would do in my area. Not near the mountains, so no skiing, no climbing (except the indoor gym or the local BSA camp), no white water.... I guess swimming, scuba, flat water paddling, hiking, man made climbing.... only so much....
-
I'm interested in following this conversation. I'm thinking forward that it might be in my future to spin off a crew for my CO..... just maybe. I like the high adventure idea.... seems like it would be a lot more fun for the kids. and as the father of two girls I'm intrigued at the idea of letting girls in. My middle daughter is starting with GS this year, but I'm just not seeing that pan out in the long run. She's sporty, and I think down the road she might get something out of an outdoor program.

Camping Merit Badge - Front Country vs. Back Country Camping

my only additional thought might be to point out to him that he could steer the patrol or troop to do another backcountry trip in the future for the pride in accomplishment. -
I seem to remember reading as I skimmed over the thread, that he was originally staying so he could finish his duties as scribe. Seems like an honorable thing to do. I can also sympathize with the idea that he's got friends there, and a lot of history if he's worked all the way up to his eagle BOR.... and yes, maybe friends since Cubs. Not an easy thing to walk away from I'll bet.

My son is into his 3rd year as a cub scout I stepped up half way through his Tiger year to help as an Assistant Den Leader Have held ADL, ACM, CM and now going through yet another application to be CC for our troop. Along the way, I filled out I think 4 additional applications to replace "lost" paperwork. so in less than three years, I've filled out something like 8 membership applications..... all so I could volunteer. I haven't moved. I haven't changed phone numbers I haven't changed email addresses. Yes, it's a stupid system.
-
I'd like to see it happen.
-
I've gotten side tracked, need to get back on this. still haven't found something that's not cluttered up with award tracking though.... just want something good at email serving announcements calendar photo & file sharing

you bring up many points Pack18alex Honestly, aside from running the store, processing the member applications, and maintaining the scout camp properties that we don't get a lot of use out of anyaway....I don't see that we get much of anything out of council. granted that's just my perspective, but that's how it is.... They aren't helping to grow our numbers and they aren't helping us put on a better program..... imho What little training is offered seems to be solely facilitated by volunteers The round table seems to be staffed by volunteers in a facility that I'm guessing is donated. (church) .... so I'm not really sure on the cub level what would be gained by maintaining our "good relationship" with council..... I'm assuming anyway, that we have a good relationship, since we are one of the more lucrative packs in the area in terms of popcorn, and relatively large membership roles. Short of something in-appropriate such as selling dirty magazines...., I can't imagine why they would not approve a fundraiser. What was the "niche" product that they rejected for you?
