  1. I wonder how the risk management folks feel about a unit hosting a motorcycle rally.
  2. Glad to see they made an arrest. Absent information to the contrary, I think it's safe to assume the money is probably long gone, though.
  3. The only scout needing to call the scoutmaster should be the SPL ;-)
  4. Do you honestly believe anyone in a BSA national leadership position told Trump that the speech was "the greatest speech that was ever made to them, and they were very thankful."? The only place that comment existed was in his head.
  5. I don't believe it is snarky at all. The poster of the comment toward which my comment was directed has, by his account, been involved in scouting over 25 years and only recently as a trainer. In light of that, I would expect that rewarding experiences with youth would far outnumber those in a training setting. You may disagree with this observation, but I'm not sure why you impugn my motivations.
  6. That's too bad. If your most rewarding experiences in Scouting don't involve working with Scouts, something went wrong.
  7. Someone is delusional here, and I doubt it is anyone in the BSA national office. (No comment on whether National might be delusional on other subjects :-) )
  8. Correct, but absent today's statement, their silence could be viewed as a tacit endorsement. And yes, it would have been nice to see the words narcissistic, egomaniacal, and unhinged in the statement, but that might be crossing some line. :-)
  9. I understand that (although I don't necessarily agree with the absolute part). My question was more along the lines of whether there is a good reason for this, or is it just a "we've always done it that way" justification. Wearing a hat doesn't seem inherently offensive.
  10. Taking the discussion back a further step, why is it impolite to wear a hat indoors, particularly while eating? Food service workers are required to cover their hair to avoid contamination, and a hat many times fits this requirement. The reason I ask is because I have fairly thick hair, and even after a haircut, I get the most ridiculous looking "hat head" when I take my hat off, that can only be resolved by completely wetting down my hair (i.e. shower). I think I would be much more visually non-offensive wearing a baseball cap rather than this disheveled coif.
  11. I wonder if this is their "booth." http://www.conveysignsolutions.com/services/wraps-vinyl/ If that's the case, it looks a little more secure than the tent and folding tables that I was picturing, but still not a good place to store that kind of cash overnight. And it also begs the question, as noted above, if nothing else was burglarized, who knew that the money was there?
  12. Saw this article on my local news website: http://www.kwwl.com/story/35866183/2017/07/12/13000-stolen-from-jesup-boy-scouts Apparently the troop had $13,000.00 in cash sitting overnight in some sort of fundraising booth at a local festival. Not sure how they thought that was a good idea, but my question is does anyone besides the thief bear any responsibility for this loss?
  13. Equipment of that sort of value should be insured. (There are other threads discussing this, and whose name it should be in).
  14. What about this is high adventure? It sounds more like an amusement park.
  15. Here is the thread I was thinking of, for what it's worth: http://scouter.com/index.php/topic/10689-what-happens-when-there-are-bad-letters-of-reference/
  16. I would tend to agree with that, but somewhere in the archives on this board is another discussion along these lines, and I recall people coming up with examples of negative references. (I don't have time to search harder now. Maybe a weekend task)
  17. So you extrapolate from that tragic, freak event that there are no circumstances, anywhere, where scouts can responsibly camp near a river? There was a tragic accident in the Boundary Waters last year where 2 were killed when a storm brought down a tree. Should Northern Tier be closed?
  18. Here in the upper Mississippi valley, a good percentage of public campgrounds are within the floodplain of the Mississippi and its tributaries. The reason for that is simple - these are areas that are not suitable for building or other development, but they are beautiful areas. There wouldn't be much camping around here if it wasn't for floodplains. Here is one of the best examples: http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/lands/lowerwisconsin/ The rivers here rise predictably in response to rain events. Might want to consider that well informed, conscientious folks familiar with local condition
  19. Nor should people comment on subjects about which they are not informed.
  20. I just received an email from my council (Northeast Iowa) indicating the same information above, but with the same link to the FAQ's that doesn't address the termination.
  21. I don't have any firsthand knowledge of a qualified charter application being denied by a council. Starting a new unit is a positive for a DE. Even if the scouts come from another unit, the district would still be even on scout numbers and plus one for units.
  22. I don't think you're going to find an official answer, like keeping business records for 7 years or anything like like. I suppose the question is are they relevant? outdated? superseded? On the other hand, there are some materials out there, like the earlier editions of the Scoutmaster Handbook and Patrol Leader Handbook that are really timeless, and in many ways better than the current versions. You might find someone on ebay looking for the old magazines.
  23. Thanks for the input! I didn't see that last line from the insignia guide.
