  1. AFAIK, those "90 day" requirements exist for at least two merit badges on the required list for Eagle. You can warn the boy about these requirements, but it's really up to him. One of the things that can be done, if you catch it early enough, is to have the Scout begin to construct the first 1-2 weeks or so of the record from memory. If the Scout is motivated and wants to finish his Eagle, he will be able to do that. Then he's back on track, and the fire has been successfully lit.
  2. The only thing that should continue to be paid out 20-40 years down the road are retirement benefits. If the employees were expected to pay into their retirement, and they did, then it is the government's responsibility to manage those funds with the realization that recessions occur.
  3. Contracts made 20-40 years ago should not be a problem, as they have been accepted reality for all that time. Unless of course, things like contractual requirements and stare decisis mean nothing to you, in which case you feel that you can get away with anything under the fig leaf of having been elected to office! That hardly seems like an American notion.
  4. By "legacy costs," do you mean commitments that were previously agreed to?
  5. Beavah, Perhaps. I have misunderstood. Are you saying that what happened in Arizona is more acceptable than my choice of rhetoric, because that's certainly how it sounds... I may have chosen a very bad example, but my point was that elections do not always result in the furtherance of the electorate's interests, not to cast Governor Walker or Representative Giffords or anyone else as "that guy."(This message has been edited by sherminator505)
  6. I think that the bigger problem is that National is trying to build a training culture via the mandatory training route. Rather than making the effort to determine how the courses could be made more relevant to the course participation so they will take a more positive attitude toward it, they have opted for a "take it or leave" approach that probably won't help retain Scouters or make them more likely to seek training beyond the bare minimum.
  7. Wait until the time is right to get involved in OA again. You'll know when that time has arrived.
  8. The elites are the ones who get the obscenely large government rebates as their reward for selling us foreign oil, shipping jobs overseas and providing the same sort of financial "services" that brought us the Great Recession of 2008 while the rest of us continue to fight over the leftover crumbs.
  9. I would assume the answer is no and encourage the Scouts to put together an annual program that accounts for this.
  10. If memory serves, George III had a House of Commons and a court system that was presumably based on the Magna Carta. So given your line of logic, why did the American Revolution ever happen, if a third of the colonists were against it?
  11. King Scott has gone far beyond "doing what's right" and pole-vaulted straight into notoriety, and any villification he receives for it is richly deserved.
  12. I agree what everyone else has said here. While your DC didn't get the boys to go to *his* troop, 6 out of 8 advancing to Boy Scouts is something to be very proud of. A question: does the pack have the same CO as the troop the boys went to? Or did one of the boys have an older brother in that other troop?
  13. AFAIK Boy Scout still isn't a rank. As such, I have always wondered why that badge ever existed, as completing the joining requirements is the prerequisite for wearing the uniform in the first place.
  14. Engineer61 presents this situation as a choice between the following: "1) Changing the troop to what the SM and ASM want's to run, losing the Scouts then you tick off the parents?" or "2) Leaving the troop as it is, having the Scouts get what this Troop as to offer the way it is." What I have to wonder is, how did this troop get to the point where the Troop Committee has taken it upon itself to micro-manage in this fashion? And if the Troop Committee has taken this position, then what is the point of having SM's and ASM's in the first place? And for that matter, if this tro

  16. @ 83Eagle, To my mind, none of what you have said justifies a sitting Governor taking upon himself the unitary powers of a monarch. Do you disagree?(This message has been edited by sherminator505)
  17. Outside of sounding more than a little condescending toward the President of the United States, does this statement even begin to address the fact that those workers have agreed to all of the Governor's fiscal demands if they retain their bargaining rights? Or the fact that his budget not only cuts public education but prohibits local governments from passing levies to make up for the shortfalls? Or the fact that this same bill would give sole power to the Governor to spin off public utilities to whoever he pleases for whatever sweetheart deal he feels they've earned? The facts
  18. Where is this happening?! I'm not in a union, but my father was (in private industry, BTW), and the conversations I remember revolved around "what benefits are we going to give up to avoid a strike THIS time?" Also, as a public worker where collective bargaining is present, I have seen my contributions toward benefits increase along with my copays and deductibles. These hardly appear to be the fruits of overbearing, strongarm tactics. In my lifetime, I have seen unions make concession after concession, so tell me. Where is this "hostage taking" going on, and could you please provide
  19. It should be fine. But why not accept a new patch if the troop offers you one? You could then retain the old one in your collection.(This message has been edited by sherminator505)
  20. Might I suggest that if we get ourselves out of these horrible trade deals and get Americans to start making stuff for other Americans to buy, then we wouldn't be fighting over crumbs?
  21. We really are trying to be helpful. I think what I've been trying to say is that regardless of who is giving this presentation, that person should use some judgment in selecting an appropriate venue. IMHO, an ECOH ain't it.
  22. ScoutBox, I really don't think BadenP is trolling. His experiences in Scouting have undoubtedly shaped the lens he views this particular issue with, so his response should neither surprise nor offend. For my own part, I own two beads that I hardly ever wear. I get self-conscious when I wear them due to the mystique/cultishness/cliquiness that often surrounds them. Simply put, that's not me. And I would agree with BadenP that this whole bead-counting exercise cannot be good for Scouting.
  23. "Who you gonna tax when all the rich people are gone?" The rich aren't going away. Just as Jesus pointed out that the poor would always be with us, so will the rich. How else would we know who the poor people are? Even in Eisenhower's time, when the marginal tax rate was 91%, there were plenty of rich people. And the country prospered, because those rich people decided that rather than hand their money to the government, they would invest it in their businesses. This is called job creation. And it worked well until we decided to stop protecting our industries and allow job creation w
