  1. Be Prepared - aspirin bottle (regarding Blackbaud's delay in reporting and ransom paid) On July 16, 2020, Blackbaud, a U.S. based cloud computing provider and one of the world’s largest providers of education administration, fundraising, and financial management software, notified users of its services that it had suffered a ransomware attack in May 2020 in relation to personal data stored on their servers. Numerous colleges, universities, foundations, and other non-profits across the U.K., U.S. and Canada were affected. Blackbaud’s handling of the attack has raised some questions. Blackbaud has confirmed in a statement on its website that they paid the cyber-criminal’s ransom demand in return for confirmation that the stolen data had been destroyed. Paying ransom demands is not unlawful, but it goes against the official advice issued by many law enforcement agencies, including the FBI. In addition, Blackbaud has faced criticism for taking many weeks to inform its customers of the breach. 2. ...Most often such character development is achieved by means of outdoor programs where scouts can be close to nature. But there are ways of learning conservation and leadership skills in an outdoor setting that do not involve camping, and that is where the Sea Scouts come in. In 1910 Lord Baden-Powell’s brother Warrington published a book in Britain about Sea Scouting. By 1912 Arthur Carey of Massachusetts used the book to establish the Sea Scouting program in the U.S. Despite an endorsement from the Secretary of the Navy, Sea Scouting in America started off slowly and for its first years was largely confined to the Atlantic coast. The Great Lakes, however, are a natural setting for Sea Scouting, and by 1918 Sea Scout units were being established in Wisconsin. The entire national organization was restructured in 1922 under the leadership of Thomas Keane of New York, and consequently during the 1920s membership in Sea Scouting exploded. Sea Scouting reached the Northwoods in the spring of 1929 when a Sea Scout unit was established in the town of Mercer. A. H. Rice, the Scoutmaster for the local Boy Scout Troop became the unit Skipper. Richard Roberts became First Mate of the Mercer “Ship.” The choice of Mercer as the first in the Northwoods was a direct result of Thomas Keane’s aggressive recruitment program. Keane had instructed scouting’s regional headquarters in Chicago to look to towns and villages not large enough to support a full Sea Scout program but still active enough to recruit teenage boys for a separate Sea Scout “patrol unit.” With an active Boy Scout organization, Mercer was perfect for this... 3. Camp Alaflo (AL) ..."Our biggest thing this year is really getting people out to get out of the house a little bit because they've been cooped up for such a long time and we just want them to enjoy the scouting experience," said Camp Alaflo Camp Director Joe Maxwell. In addition to masks and temperature checks, the staff is sanitizing high touch areas like the shotgun range. The camp has even changed the dining experience. "We are delivering food in the morning where we usually eat in the trading post and then in the evening we are eating in shifts which really helps out and is able to spread people out and not be so close together," Maxwell added. Despite new rules and regulations, the scouts are not seeing a change in the amount of fun they are having. More in video at source: https://www.wtvy.com/2020/07/29/boy-scouts-attend-camp-alaflo/

  7. National (thru NewWorld19) planned and budgeted to make a profit from WSJ 2019, say it was $400 profit/scout. So if unplanned additional expenses were an added $400/scout, they would have broke even. With a $3M loss for 30,000 scouts, then the unplanned additional expenses are ($400+$100)/scout. Ouch.
  8. We used to do this more in Scouting... explain, in your own words, the meaning of the flag, Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem, Scout Oath and Law, Scout badge,...and often the scout thoughts expressed were priceless. How can we develop leaders without asking what they think and giving them the freedom to do so? For example, old Tenderfoot requirements 2. ...Describe Scout Badge & explain its meaning...memorize 12 words of the Law and explaining their meaning in your own words My $0.02,
  9. Found this news story: Green County Boy Scouts camp hold summer camp (VA) Beginning on Sunday, July 12, after nearly four months without the ability to practice their skills as a troop, the camp provided scouts with opportunities to learn and teach scout safety and rank skills, to hike at Preddy Creek Trail Park, to kayak at Greene Mountain Lake, and even for some light-hearted competition in the form of a Highland Games, which included events such as axe throwing and a caber toss. Finally, on Saturday, July 18, the troop held a campfire and Court of Honor to recognize all of the scouts’ efforts. Scouts like Josef Sjordal loved “just being active in the outdoors” and Andrew Schlict liked “not being stuck in the house.” According to Jeffrey Wallace, the Senior Patrol Leader, the camp was necessary because “it is important to get the scouts, particularly the new scouts, back into a scouting mindset as we move into the fall.” More details at source: https://dailyprogress.com/greenenews/lifestyles/greene-county-boy-scouts-hold-summer-camp/article_1c9db9a6-cc3c-11ea-9d94-dbaf6ee9fa4b.html
  10. Bill began carving wooden bolo tie slides in the early 1960s and never stopped. He's crafted more than 48,000 bolos (he numbers the back of each one) and almost all have ended up hanging around the neck of a young Scout or a dedicated leader who, in exchange for the gift, makes a lifelong pledge to live the Scout Oath and Law. source link William Bradford Burch August 7, 1923 – September 25, 2012 Scout Salute
  11. Update July 25, 2020: The 1,288-acre former Camp Tapico Boy Scout property in Kalkaska County is opening to the public this weekend as a new nature preserve – The Upper Manistee Headwaters: The Milock Family Preserve - the result of a four-year, nearly $4 million effort by the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) to save the sprawling pristine wilderness from development and turn it over to public recreational use. ... Tens of thousands of Boy Scouts coming to Camp Tapico over nearly eight decades to swim, fish, hike, and camp on the property also ultimately helped secure its preservation. “We received hundreds and hundreds of gifts, many of them from former Scouts who had their first outdoor experiences at the property,” says Chown. “They first learned to camp or use a canoe or sailboat there and came from very urban places, like Flint and Detroit. These people are now grown, and the fact that they could contribute to keeping this property available to the public and still be able to use the trails the Scouts created is a really heartwarming story.” more details at source, including how this opportunity was nearly lost...“Without the Woollam family and the Milocks, it would've been a pipe dream and that property would be developed or in private hands and inaccessible to the public,” https://www.traverseticker.com/news/1288-acre-former-boy-scout-camp-opens-to-public-as-upper-manistee-headwaters-preserve/

  13. At 19, Johnson was the youngest member of Adm. Richard Byrd’s 1939 expedition to Antarctica aboard the USS Bear, a 19th-century, thick-hulled wooden ship with sails and diesel. He went back with Byrd in 1946 for Operation High Jump, then joined another U.S. Navy expedition there, Operation Windmill, in 1948. Harvey Morrissey, 16, a Sea Scout from Ocala, also came up for [Johnson's 100th] party. He had done a podcast with Johnson and was struck by his vivid stories of Antarctica and of his teenage sailing journey on the Pacific Queen. He [Johnson] recalls that on the first expedition, their transport on the ice was sleds and dogs. To feed the dogs, they would shoot a seal — and that would be the dogs’ lunch. 14. To quibble, "scouter", "adviser" should go too as a scout is not called a "scoutee", "advisee", .. I like "ScoutMan". IMHO how's this for a non-gaudy patch AND...and I also came up with a marketing slogan to recruit volunteers...Become a Big Blue Boy Scout.
  15. The council’s emergency task force report, a copy of which was obtained by the Kennebec Journal, recommends selling Camp Bomazeen within three months, with an emphasis on an ability to do a quick closing. It further recommends to auction the property off, if a sale is not made in 45 days. Klutzaritz said the ideal sale would include an arrangement that would allow Scouting activities to continue to take place at the property, at times, though he wasn’t sure of the likelihood of that happening. “I can tell you we have a group of people working toward that as their primary goal,” he said of selling it to an entity that would allow the Scouts to at least occasionally use the property. https://www.centralmaine.com/2020/07/18/historic-camp-bomazeen-in-belgrade-to-be-sold-by-boy-scouts-council-in-dire-financial-straits/
  16. Pine Tree Council had a board vote Thursday night to sell the 75-year-old Camp Bomazeen in Belgrade, Maine . Pine Tree Council had earlier formed an emergency task force to address its financial problems but the task force concluded that unless the camp is sold, council would be out of money in a matter of months. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has decimated the council’s ability to raise money for Scouting activities, officials said. Matt Klutzaritz, Scout executive and CEO of the Raymond-based Pine Tree Council, said it was a difficult decision and they understand the move will make some loyal Camp Bomazeeners upset. But it’s necessary to keep the organization, and Scouting, going in the council’s region of the state, he said. https://www.centralmaine.com/2020/07/18/historic-camp-bomazeen-in-belgrade-to-be-sold-by-boy-scouts-council-in-dire-financial-straits/
  17. Since 1991, the Greater Tampa Bay Area Council has hosted the Brooksville Raid (1864) Reenactment at their 1,300-acre Sand Hill Scout Reservation. Now Council has decided not to renew the agreement with event co-sponsors, the Hernando Historical Museum Association and the North Pinellas County Scout Sertoma Club. The next reenactment in January would have been the 40th anniversary of the event. “There were several issues that were discussed and contributed to the decision,” said Jim Rees, chief executive officer for the council. “Ultimately, the committee determined it was not in the best interest of the scout council to continue.” He provided no other specifics. On their Facebook page, Brooksville Raid organizers cited the pandemic and declining profitability as factors. Organizers and those who commented on the post also mentioned declining interest among young people in joining the reenactment community and the recent racial unrest across the country. Will other Scout councils and units withdraw from reenactment events? 19. Jamborees may be a money loser for BSA and the state (support expenditures for National Guard, police, fire, and medical) but for local businesses: Postponement of the 2021 National Jamboree by Boy Scouts of America is expected to decrease tax revenue by an estimated $1.2 million and to cut 350 jobs, according to data supplied by Lisa Strader, executive director of Visit Southern West Virginia. "It is, definitely, a major blow for 2021 for our region," said Strader. "But we know that planning for that large of an event begins so far in advance that they just don't have the luxury of waiting." Strader cited a 2019 economic impact study by the West Virginia University Bureau of Business Economic Research that shows the National Jamboree has a $76 million impact on the economy. The National Jamboree happens every four years. In years without a National Jamboree, The Summit Bechtel Reserve brings in some $28 million and supports 280 jobs, injecting $1 million into state and local tax coffers.* ... 22. My read, NewWorld19 LLC lost $2.8M but the BSA ( a manager, current agent, and registrant of NewWorld 19 in Texas) of is on the hook for it and not the other hosts and managers of NewWorld19, Canada and Mexico. "Under the terms of NewWorld’s operating agreement, BSA paid all of the expenses of planning and operating the 2019 World Scout Jamboree and was entitled to the revenues derived from the 2019 World Scout Jamboree." Dec 20, 2018: It is important to note that the three co-hosting National Scout Organizations (Scouts of Mexico, Scouts Canada and Boy Scouts of America) took the decision 3 years ago to establish a separate legal entity for the Jamboree, known as “NewWorld19, LLC”, which operates separately from all the co-hosts of the event. https://www.2019wsj.org/statement-from-the-organizing-committee-of-the-24th-world-scout-jamboree/ I found the the 2019 WSJ Final report below and nowhere else. Compare its bewildering format and availability to previous World Jambo final reports. Anyway the answers you seek may be in there, good luck in your search. https://issuu.com/carajas/docs/wsj_2019_final_report
