“We’re having a rally on the weekend after Labor Day next year,â€â€ˆTrower said. “That’s an absolute positive.â€

And while attendance at the first-ever New Hampton Motorcycle Rally paled in comparison to the heyday of the Davis Rally, Trower and the Boy Scouts had plenty of reasons to celebrate the rally they put together in a span of just two months.

The community support was outstanding, the reviews from the almost 300 motorcyclists were almost exclusively positive and the scouts themselves had a blast.
    “It went great,†Trower said ...

Researching this topic, I found several Boy Scout sponsored motorcycle rallies. Some were Council sponsored but more were troop sponsored.

  2. So ASMs override what the boys want?

If scouts, PL, and SPL  fail to follow the nutrition guidelines (MyPlate) in their handbook OR they did not consider food allergies in their patrol,  then ASM will not approve the menu, reminders given, and back to the drawing board.  Ditto for shopping in checking ingredients, cost, food packaging and storage.

We don't want the wrong food spoiling an outing for anybody. :(

  3. When we do menu planning does your unit override the patrols' choices and force them to eat well? Or do you teach them the right things and then let them practice it themselves? If the latter, then why wouldn't you do that at summer camp?

Absolutely, we check them and follow the nutritional guidelines stated in their handbooks.  Otherwise,  what is the point in teaching nutrition and cooking if they are not meeting  the expectations of the Scouting program .

We have an ASM who approves menus and another who is available to assist in shopping within the patrol budget, less some Scout thought buying food at Whole Paycheck was a good idea.

  4. Circle Ten Council (Dallas area) is putting together another clean up trip to Houston for Scouts/Scouters.  Here's the link if interested.

Last Saturday, the group worked moving debris closer to the streets so the claw trucks could reach the piles.

From that link: What to bring:

Medical parts A &B, gloves, bug spray, water bottle, boots, long sleeve shirt

We will be mucking houses that were flooded so they can begin the rebuilding process.

    Is Council providing respirator masks?

  5. Thanks I didn't finish that fragment about carbs and heart disease.

Excess sugar, whatever the source, can lead to higher triglyceride levels and increased weight, both heart risks.

As stated in the links, the slushes and candy are still there. You seem upset that healthier alternatives were made available  giving the consumer more freedom of choice.

  6. Excess sugar

Carbs don't put you at risk for heart disease.

The point is that the Sugar Nazis don't have to manage what kids eat. Offer up healthy choice in the mess hall? Fine. Manage kids with limited snacking options in the TP is too much. Let kids be kids. If they're Scouts they get the food choices beat in to them in MBs and rank Advancement. The last thing they need is someone pushing carrots on them instead of slushes in the TP.

At the trading post, the new approach meant changes to both product placement and product cost. Healthier options became more visible and less expensive.

“These good-for-you foods were priced lower than candy, slushes and soda, which were still available for purchase,†Jeanne Arnold said. “They just weren’t the first thing you saw.â€

...I ( CC Boy Scout Troop 77 in Westfield, NJ) awoke yesterday to rumors that the Patriots Path Council Executive Committee is voting in a week to close Sabattis Adventure Camp, which has been a source of learning and fun for Boy Scouts for 60 years, and sell the 1,250-acre property to developers in the Adirondacks.

It is not clear why they are considering this move. Although many are aware this is happening, there is no official word from the council. There have been no public discussions, no consultations with those most closely affected by the council decisions: the troops, the packs, the Scouts and their families.

It is odd that a Boy Scout Executive Committee should behave this way. It runs counter to everything we teach our scouts at every meeting. It runs counter to the Scout Law and the Scout Oath that our boys repeat at the start of every troop meeting, every troop activity and every sunrise at Sabattis.

I have emailed all members of the Patriots Path Council staff, urging them against the closure of Sabattis Adventure Camp, and I have received the exact same canned reply from all but one who have responded, even with the same typo:

The council president has called a special executive board meeting to discuss the future of Sabattis Adventure Camp. Until the board meets there is no change with the Sabattis Adventure Camp program. If they are any changes it will be announced on the council website during the week of September 18th.

There is no mention of a Council President on the Patriots Path Council website.

It certainly seems the result is already determined.

I encourage all those with a stake in the future of the Boy Scout Program, whether your sons are currently Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Eagle Scouts or past Scouts, whether they have attended Sabattis, currently attend or currently volunteer at Sabattis to attend a protest scheduled to begin just before the Executive Committee meeting. The protest begins at 6 p.m. at the Patriots Path Council Office at 1 Saddle Road, Cedar Knolls, NJ, on Monday, Sept. 18.

Sabattis Adventure Camp is located in Long Lake, NY

  8. I couldn’t find anything saying that they can’t, but if you guys do or know please let me know.

I really want to do the cycling merit badge with my mom since it’ll make life easier ( and I’d rather not do 50 miles with someone I don’t know ).

What does your Scoutmaster advise? Merit badges aren't about easy, they are about personal growth through adult association - learn a skill, learn how to communicate and work with adults (other than your parents)

Who knows there might be a local MBC who rode the famed Tour de Donut

    :)

  9. The Davis Motorcycle Rally has taken place in New Hampton,IA for many years, but organizers decided not to run it this year (dropping vendor revenue?). Local Boy Scout Troop 48, which had helped motorcycle campers at Mikkelson Park in past rallies, stepped up and organized the now renamed New Hampton Motorcycle Rally

“There’s a little nervousness and a lot of excitement,†Boy Scout 48 Troop Scoutmaster Tony Trower said. “We’re ready, and we’re hoping to get a good crowd.†(Sep 8-10)

And one thing hasn't changed, and that is this: The first motorcyclist enthusiasts arrived on Labor Day afternoon and set up camp.

"I think just seeing that got me all charged up," Trower said. "We can't wait to see how this goes."

Interesting fundraiser idea -  reviving a local event..
