  1. You'll need your Council's permission to attend. National Camp School training is paid for by your local council, provided you are serving as a staff member of their summer camp program, and you need the cert for the Camp to meet National Standards.(This message has been edited by le Voyageur)
  2. This pdf link should help... http://bsa-brmc.org/images/stories/PDFs/ncs%20national%20camping%20school%202012.pdf A number of years back, had expressed that the Trek Leader cert be split into a wet, and dry side. That is happening this year, means that those trek leaders who will run and over see white water programs and/or canoe treks at their Council summer camp, won't have to hoof it with the backpackers.
  3. Blue Ridge Mountains Council will be hosting....25 May - 1 June Designed for the person who will train staff guides for council high adventure and/or unit high adventure trek programs. This section includes training in emergency procedures, environmental ethics, interpersonal relationships, and managing risk. Participants in this course will spend a lot of time on the water and will complete swiftwater rescue training.
  4. Several good points have been brought up. However, the one that I see most often is that the OA is little more than a clique. I've seen too many scouts promoted to Vigil just because they were buddies with the Lodge Chief and his inner circle. Nothing to do with merit what so ever....As I see it, the OA is doing it's self in
  5. In the deep woods of Maine, these critters have now evolved to the point that they dine on anything, and everything that's coated with DEET. Deet products, in my subjective opinion is that they are now worthless. My solution, a Coleman product of which I've forgotten the name of at the moment(can be found at Wally World), but made of natural ingrediants that seems to work well when teamed up with a bug shirt... http://www.bugshirt.com/diagrams.htm(This message has been edited by le Voyageur)
  6. For myself, I've dropped out of the OA entire, got tired of the Pan Indian Hollywood productions of a faux legend. So, is there a better way....yes, it's called historical reenacting based oh facts produced by research. As I see it, the dancing, and feathers are nothing more than eye candy farb for mis-informed scouts, and scouters.
  7. There was no supernatural "star" ...if anything. More than likely they used either the Silk road, or the Incense road, each well known, and well used....
  8. Joseph of Arimathea was Mary's uncle, and a Magi Mary was raped by a Roman soldier, was about age 16 at the time of Yeshua's birth. Joseph was not her husband, but her father. Under Jewish law, Mary was subject to being stoned to death, being spirted away and hidden for safety. There were more than 3 magi Frankencense was used to bless the birth Mirth is used as an antiseptic inferring a difficult birth. Gold was the nest egg from Joseph of Arimathea to get Mary, and the child to Egypt, there he would study in the mystery schools at Heliopolis
  9. Hat on, or off. Matters not a whit...if it doesn't pick your pocket, or break your leg, mind your own business as I see it...growing up in the southwest, we left our hats on, and I ain't changing me ways for no one....
  10. Newt has way, way too much baggage, and no moral compass....that old saw about feet of clay....well, for Newt the clay is past his eyeballs. As for a better Republican choice, there are none. Seems only the truly crazy are going for the brass ring. The thought of any one of these people having their finger on the nuclear trigger should send shrivers down the back of every American....
  11. I understand the need for a new Jambo site, which was the only purpose that AP Hill served. AP had never been used as a high adventure base, nor was AP ever in direct competition with other council's high adventure programs in the area. It seems National has decided that Summit will not only replace AP Hill, but offer the exact same high adventure programs of BRMC,impacting that Council's many high adventure programs. Programs which they've spent years developing at considerable cost.....I just don't see National as a good neighbor...which is the reason for my question(This message has been ed
  12. My question for National is, why do you need another high adventure base? More so when there is already a Council offering the same program, and has been offering those programs over a decade, or more. What purpose does it serve to cut the economic throat of this Council? Is it only about profit, which from my perspective seems to be the case!
  13. Depends on the time of the year, and where... But, my trip plan, which includes a Plan B, along with a duplicate set of maps, and coordinates are left with my "boss" before heading out.
  14. Summit has listed staff positions for volunteers to fill for this Jambo...however, being required to hand over 850 bucks is just a little too excessive. I've a feeling that those who will ante up for this bit of extortion, are those who are desperate for the bragging rights of being "the first". I wish them luck, and all the best in filling these position. However for myself, were I interested in this Jambo, I would hire on at one of the local outfitters, and work as a raft guide since Summit will be using local outfitters to run rafting trips...
  15. Agree with desertrat....keep it simple, and don't sweat the mistakes. Scouts aren't a Marine Corp color guard detail...
  16. for myself....not a problem. My shirt is plain, and has nothing adorning it, other than the gray shoulder tabs. Just don't see the need for the puffery....
  17. America's educational system is stuck in the 19th century with it's high school turning out young adults with little, to no job skills or experience. And, SOL's are a con game.... The solution for those high schools is to add a 5th year...3 years of academics, and liberal arts, followed by two years of job training, and skill development. Or, for those who will continue on to higher education, college prep work and advance studies.... At all levels from pre K up, courses should include the study of foreign languages, mathamatics, science, and philosophy...my 2 cents...
  18. Instead of BSA's WFA manual... http://www.nols.edu/books/wilderness_medicine/ and.. http://www.amazon.com/Where-There-Doctor-David-Werner/dp/0942364155/ref=pd_sim_b_3 It's not what's in your first aid kit that's important, it's what's between your ears....(This message has been edited by le Voyageur)
  19. As I teach in Wilderness Risk Management - Plan your Plan, Work your Plan, but, Don't Fall in Love with your Plan...it's good advice that allows one to move from Plan A to Plan B when conditions begin to head south...it's why, were I to go through another WB course to have a ticket in hand ahead of time. I find not being prepared allows not only unfolding events, but people in general to take control of one's destiny
  20. I'm going to stand by the advice I gave, and disagree with BDPT. Just because some one shows up at course with a Ticket in hand does not mean they're locked into it. There may come at times a rash of those ah hah moments during the course where a different tack, and a bit of adjustment will produce better results. Round Tables, camporee's as well as visits to other troops with seasoned unit leaders all serve as great sources to bounce ideals off of before the course. As I see, having been through two Wood Badge courses, a little prep work ahead of times avoids a lot of the frustion in fle
  21. Begin by thinking about your Ticket. Talk to other Wood Badgers for suggestions and ideals. This bit of prep work will save you a lot of frustion, and wasted time during the course. For myself, I would show up at the course with the Ticket ready to go....
  22. yep...duct tape works great for sucking head wounds...and compression for venomous barunah bites from extreme noodling...
  23. "local cache reviewer"???? No such animal in these woods..and if there was. I doubt they would consider spending up to half a day or more getting into the area by canoe, than finding their way back out....trust me, these caches won't be easy...
  24. Besides rising fuel cost, other factors...rising cost of food, insurance, payroll, replacement cost, maintenance cost, permits, training, utilities...etc., etc.
  25. I'll soon be putting out my first geocache. These will be places that will not only be a challenge to locate, but require above average outdoor skills to get to. Now the question, what would you considered to be the appropriate swag for the amount of effort that will be required to tag these caches?
