  1. this rig is fairly easy to tie, you'll need about 20 to 25 feet of 10.5mm static line. now, if you can tie an overhand knot, such as this one... http://i546.photobucket.com/albums/hh427/Chowanoke/DSCI0291.jpg and form a bight ( a bend in the rope) http://i546.photobucket.com/albums/hh427/Chowanoke/DSCI0288.jpg the following steps will be easy...first, make the first bight by bringing the ends of the rope together.... http://i546.photobucket.com/albums/hh427/Chowanoke/DSCI0294.jpg two additional bights are laid out... http://i546.photobucket.com/albums/hh

  3. If the above were true then why on earth would Scouting and Robert Baden-Powell aprove of female Scout masters in 1913 at the 1st Herrington Scout group ( and probably a few others), see this website for the early history of 1st Herrington Scout group Pint The private life of BP was far different than his public life as protrayed. Having read a number of journals, diaries, dispatches, and etc written by those who knew both BP and Kenneth McLaren it's not a pretty picture...
  4. Oak Tree You're comparing orange marmalade to apple jelly BP was a 19th century Brit of the Victorian era, and a member of the military gentry who's attitude toward women are not what they are today. It's impossible to strike a comparison with BP's social class where bigotry, sexism and racism were part of their life's weave, with today's Americans. We've left that century behind, or at least trying to.....
  5. Seeing how LDS deep pockets has steered BSA to the hard political right, I don't see such an ideal bearing fruit. An apparent problem I see first up is where these different types of units co mingle at summer camps. They would have to have seperate weeks to prevent intercine warfare. 6. Lord of the Flies....I see where certain advancement requirements would be set to zero for a very long time....

  8. The thought of Scouting in Uganda is at best, an oxymoron. It's a beautiful, wonderful, almost magical country. But, the government is nothing more than a murderous thugocracy...thus, I'm not suprised at this ruling; nor am I suprised by the lack of any outcry from our side of the globe, where ethnocentric Americans are more concerned about fashion makeovers, spring fashions, celebrity chefs, movie stars, and the current sitcoms. Sometimes, even I weary of all these ugly Americans, and wish they could live just a week in the shoes of a third world outcast......
  9. It has been my task, and pleasure over the years to drive the UP's crazy....my trousers have been cut down, and sewn into knickers, and I get my socks from Smoke and Fire
  10. Got to play Devil's Advocate, council camps and services are expensive, so fund raising IS important Of the five different Councils that I've been involved with over the years, and having staff their camps, only one of those Councils has found the balance between fund raising, their programs, and retaining quailty people. Both professionals and volunteers, the current one I'm with. So, I do know that fundrasing and budgets are important. Got a lot of pride in this Council, it's SE, and it's camps. But Trust me, with 17 years of experience working summer camps there are BSA camps that
  11. My own thinking is that the problem lies at the Council level...many Councils seem to have little to no interest in outdoor programs. Just fundraisers, golf outings, and big dinner events. Too much hob nobbing, not enough scouting
  12. Being one who cannot donate blood...I say, it's a great ideal worth pursuing...
  13. yeah, it's a local phenomenon - unfortunately, it's a local phenomenon that has infected the entire country - and the infection is so widespread that no one can say for sure just where the it originated (though I suspect it was Los Angeles). Actually, you need to go more to the west - the problem is being caused by the Pineapple Express.. http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Pineapple-Express---Natural-Phenomenon&id=3579900
  14. Got the news back in early August that it would be a hard winter, and started preparing then. My forecasters were nothing more than loons in the wrong place, at the wrong time. Pay attention to Mother Nature, and you won't be needing to listen to all that prattle from those talking heads...
  15. Looks like BSA is still staying myopic with the focus on the traditional training of pools, and waterfront guards. You would think, with the new high adventure base they are building in West Virginia, BSA would start to consider a swift water rescue/awareness program for scouts and scouters, even if it was no more then just the basics to cover self rescue techniques, as well as the do's and don'ts of swimming in rapids. As I keep saying, matters not a whit if you're ARC, or BSA Lifeguard, if you don't understand the dynamics of swift water, and able to read white water, you've got no
  16. 1st the Bible doesn't fail..... evmori have to disagree. As the topic of chesed v'rachamim is common in numerous sections of the Bible, thus countering the arguments and political histrionics of those anti to homosexuality, the Bible therefore fails....the problem with the Bible is that it can be used to support both the noble, but more often, the foolish, the wicked, and a considerable amount of evil. It all depends on the wisdom, or lack there of, of those who have decided to use the tome for their waypoints, or their hammer....(This message has been edited by Le Voyageur)
  17. To hijack this thread a bit, one of the movers and shakers of L.A. during that era was Leopoldo Antonio Carrillo from Wikipedia A preservationist and conservationist, Carrillo served on the California Beach and Parks commission for eighteen years and played a key role in the state's acquisition of Hearst Castle at San Simeon, the Los Angeles Arboretum, and the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. He was eventually made a goodwill ambassador by the State Governor at the time. As a result of his service to the State, the Leo Carrillo State Park, west of Malibu on the Pacific Coast Hig
  18. Baloo... Why should folks read their Bible, or worry about your concept of "sin"? You're a Christian (I'm guessing by your post) by the accident of your birth of being born in a Christian household. Were you born in a Jewish family, you would be a Jew. Were you born in India, a Hindu, in any Arabic country, a Muslim. Were you born an 8th century Viking you would be worshipping Odin and Thor; or, were a member of an ancient Greek City state, no doubt Zuess, or Athena. Our prejudices, and bigotries, likes, and dislikes, loves and hates, who's religion is in, and who's religion is out a
  19. I've a fair feeling where the problem is at for that bug.... However, the Grand Canyon Council is free to contact me for ideals on new high adventure programs in their area which would grow their summer camping venue.
  20. A 3 legged dog walks into a saloon...says in a loud voice "I'm looking for the man who shot my paw!" The policeman pulls over a car onto the side of the road and walks over to the driver. "Do you realise you've got two snakes attached to the front of your car?" he asks. "It's all right," replies the driver, "they're just my windscreen vipers."

  22. THE OREGON WILDERNESSFrustrated by the widely held assumption that he unequivocally endorses the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, a bald eagle said Monday that his thoughts on the conflicts were far more nuanced than many Americans might expect. Speaking to reporters from his nest in the upper branches of a 175-foot ponderosa pine tree, the eagle explained that each member of his species was different and none should be taken for granted as a lockstep supporter of American military policy. http://www.theonion.com/content/news/bald_eagle_tired_of_everyone_just
  23. Mormonism has two key elements, one their religion, the other is what could be called "LDS Inc", the business side of a major multi billion dollar, tax exempt corporation. LDS Inc has a tradition, and a long history of providing absoultey no financial transparency to anyone, including it's memberbody, even though those that make up that membership must provide LDS Inc ten percent of their gross income. There are no exceptions, no one gets a quarterly statement, an accounting of where their monies go, or how it will be spent. Currently "LDS Inc" is building a major mall, the City Cree
  24. An interesting article - wondering if BSA will see a future decline in LDS units, too. http://www.sltrib.com/lds/ci_2890645
