  1. Been a while since I've ridden one, but I started off with a Norton, moving to Guzzies, BSA's, and an Indian... My last one was a tourer, A 1200cc Yamaha Venture which I logged 75 000 miles in the first year of ownership...awesome ride, and at the time a better ride then the Wing..
  2. Being military retired I won't see a nickel. However, I feel good knowing that I won't be a part of the Right Wing's nanny state experiment in socialism......
  3. Choosing a sleeping bag is pure alchemy. Temperture ratings are always subjective and suspect. The enviroment where the bag is to be used is also another factor to consider. At high altitudes, or desert treking down is the better choice. In areas such as Arkansas, primaloft insulation would be superior to down. As sleeping bags are only half of the equation, the weight of one's bottom insulation must also be considered. In cold weather/winter conditions my technique is to use a full length Ridge Rest, and a 3/4 Therma Rest. The Ridge Rest protects the whole bag and the lower body, while the Therma Rest adds an additional heatloss shield for the body's core. One last thought concerning sleeping bags is to remember that they are your last line of defense against hypothermia. A few extra bucks for a quality bag is always worth the investment
  4. Being one that tends to modify his uniform to fit his own taste that is out of the norm, I'll elect to say kudos to Scoutmaster Coronado for a job well done in providing a scouting program to boys that traditionally are not a part of scouting.... a tip of the tuque to Scoutmaster Coronado....well done
  5. Not mentioned is that it's still winter, meaning not only more weight, but bulkier items of clothing that will take up space in the backpack. It means making choices for those items that can do double, or even triple duty. As for gear, I like my making my own, or shopping at thrift stores. My current mess quick cost around 2 bucks. A Columbia fleece vest was 75 cents. My winter coat, a capote was cut from an inexpensive wool blanket, and hand sewn. Left over material was used for mitts....just a thought
  6. A passing thought to consider.... The backbone of the Star and Stripes is the Consitution, along with it's Bill of Rights. Without that backbone, the flag is nothing more then window dressing in the theatre called government.
  7. Like a COPE Director I've been holding back answering. Not to beat a dead horse GernB hit the nail on the head. America's Consitution is in tatters, our civil liberties reduced and yet few are protesting to stem this tide. As of yet, I'm still thinking about leaving as I tend to get in trouble for speaking the truth. I'll see how it goes at summer camp. None the less, the moment I begin to feel like a hypocrite I'm gone.. CaptRon....know that having served 22 years in the military (with 3 wars under my belt) I took an oath to support and defend the Consitution from all eniemes both foreign and domestic. Being retired that oath still applies. However I took no oath to defend a flag, and it's time to make a stand.
  8. For the now I'm really torn with the decision to stay within the Scouting movement. It's because of what is happening to our civil liberties. Soon we will be the absolute property of the Federal government. Already I've made the decision beginning the 11th of May when the Real ID act kicks in to no longer attend any flag ceremonies, nor render any honors to the Stars and Stripes. America as I see it dies on that day with the Consitution replaced by the fiats of the Patriot Act, and the Real I.D. act. RIP America.... 3 September 1783 - 11 May 2008
  9. The best was at Lost Valley during NCS with professionals handling all the meals. Great food, and those of us in sections that burned the calories never left feeling starved. The most interesting was Camp Shand....Granny Grits was a hoot, and I hope she's still there the next time I'm at NCS. Camp John Mensinger was a feeder, Pete was an awesome cook and every meal was one you didn't want to miss. The worst being because the Camp Director was more interested in getting his under the budget bonus at the end of the season. He chisled the breakfast menu down to 15 1/2 cents per plate, PBJ's and cheap hot dogs was the lunch time staple, and dinner ran less then 33 cents a plate. Those of us on staff couldn't wait till the weekend to head out to town. Needless to say, the complaints were many, and the camp's reputation suffered. That was ten years ago, and I don't think much has really changed as I see a number of units from that council showing up at the camp where I now staff. None the less, I do know that on those rare days when I do use the dining hall, there's no doubt that I eat much better at my outpost then any of the campers.
  10. This law serves little purpose as the Internet is Global with 5.75 billion non Americans posting off of US turf. Gonna be a lot of rendition needed enforce this turkey of a law....
  11. The article purpose seems to be to openly slam Jimmy Carter, and the stats in some areas are way off. As an example there are events that occured during the Reagan/Bush era that are little known being covered up. I suggest googling El Mozote as a start....
  12. hmmmm...dipping into the tar bucket, hehehehe.. Some of us agnostics (me and a few others), and atheists(several of my friends) are working Toy for Tots with our Christian buddies ....often followed with a rondy at the pub for a round of adult beverages... nothing like a pack of godless liberals enjoying life, and bringing a bit of joy to less fortunate wee ones during the Christmas season, hey... btw....a great Christmas season to one and all
  13. This should help..... http://www.mainehighadventure.org/reservations.html
  14. The better choice for POTUS would be... http://webb.senate.gov/ but, he's not running.
  15. As in any church there are different labels that can be applied to it's members. Within the LDS community, Romney would be considered a Legacy Mormon with Brighamite leanings, but never a FLDS...
  16. Captain Ron.... It seems that I may of offended you dispite my best efforts not to openly target anyone of this board. But yes, I'm an apostate, and now a full blown agnostic because of mormonism. Also, I post on several ex mormon boards to help those who are recovering from mormonism; or starting the process to break away from mormonism; or simply to answer questions of non members who didn't want the boiler plated answers of the mormon church, or the missionaries that knock on their door. Additionally, on one of the boards we ex's have become so infamous in steering people out of harms way, that the mormon church has decided to wage war on us. They are now in the process of hiring a staff of apologetics with PhD's to counter our arguments. We feel that this is due in large measure to Romney's run for the brass ring. We're looking forward to their best efforts...
  17. I'm a creative speller, as well as it's a known fact that my keyboard is possessed.....it should be "demon", not daemon, or what ever it was that the keyboard desided to spell out...
  18. Nothing really about religion, as religion in a way. More about the political manipulation being used to narrow separation between church and state without regard to the 1st Amendment. These two universities are the political engines driving this country toward a theocracy, producing the next generation of leaders to take this country into their brave new world. They can make, or break any candidate that won't kow tow to their world view.... Liberty University, and the Thomas Road Baptist Church (http://home.trbc.org/), a super church was created by the late Jerry Falwell, and Regent is Pat Robinson's cash cow...
  19. Regent University mind melds with Liberty University to cast out deamons, and perform exorcisms.....
  20. One more...a You Tube clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zy0d1HbItOo
  21. I'm getting in late on this one...but, to answer the orginal question...Are Mormons Christians? My answer, based on 30 years as a member before being excommunicated by a Love Court, is a big no. 1. The Mormon god is not the God of Genesis who was in the beginning, but instead was a man that ascended to godhood, and resides on a planet called Kolob, or a planet near a star called Kolob with his many wives and servants. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolob 2. The Adam-God doctrine revealed by Joseph Smith (declared a false teaching by Church President Gordon B.Hinckley thus indirectly labeling both Smith and Young as false prophets) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam%E2%80%93God_theory 3. The concept of 4 kingdoms in the after life. These are, Outer Darkness, the Telestial Kingdom, the Terrestial Kingdom, and the highest the Celestial Kingdom. To enter into the Celestial kingdom, a male priesthood holders needs permission from Joseph Smith to enter... ....that no man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith. From the day that the Priesthood was taken from the earth to the winding-up scene of all things, every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, junior, as a passport to their entrance into the mansion where God and Christ are.... http://www.utlm.org/onlineresources/sermons_talks_interviews/jofdvol7p282_291smithholdskeystoheaven.html Women, though baptized in the name of Christ, are allowed only into the Celestial kingdom by permission of their husbands. If a husband is displeased with his wife in this life, he's free to call out for another to take her place in the next... 5. Blood Atonement http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_atonement 6. Gordon B.Hinckley's own words.... http://www.watchman.org/lds/gbhjesus.htm
  22. I worked there in 2004....give the Base a call, and make arrangements with Dave, or Ray to have your crew transported by one of their vans...
  23. Parents,Scouters, and Professionals tend to forget that Scouting is not about making Eagle Scouts, but citizens first.
  24. I counsel Climbing, Whitewater, Cycling, Backpacking, Canoeing, Wilderness Survival, and Hiking. As much as I enjoy them, there are changes that should be made to enhance most of them. As an example, for Climbing, I would like to see an Alpine option that would include an understanding of snow and ice as avalanche tiggers, the physiological effects of altitude, pulley systems, and self rescue techniques. As a Scout, my favorites were Canoeing, Signaling, Hiking, Surveying and Fruit and Nut Growing (took two years to complete)....
