Scout Drowned Canoeing in Arkansas
le Voyageur replied to Eagle69's topic in Camping & High Adventure
How sad For meself, I would never run a crew on a rain swollen river. Too many things can go wrong very quickly. Peace, and all my best to this family who will have to endure such a great loss... -

Are you really "Trained"?
le Voyageur replied to Newbie Den Leader's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
The "Trained" patch is something that I don't wear. It's redundant. My Woodbadge beads, and Commissoner Arrowhead are enough doodads on a uniform. Now, if BSA would only come out with a High Adventure, and a Camp Staff square knot, then I might consider adding that to the uniform.. -
Mesa Scouts found OK after wet, cold weekend
le Voyageur replied to fgoodwin's topic in Camping & High Adventure
I'm glad that all are okay..... In all my years of backpacking in the Superstitions I've never seen snow there. It must of took these scouts by suprise. As my Phoenix kin keeps telling me, when it hits 50 they start wearing parkas...yeah, I've had cold nights in the desert, but never been snowed on. This is weather you would see up in the White Mountains, or the Mogollon rim country. The weather is just not right.... -
hmmmmm....large camp, North Georgia. Guessing - nears Blairsville perchance? If so, nice camp. Be headed there to re cert as a Climbing Director..

Voyageur, You've piqued my curiosity!! Why the "leave it to professionals" secrecy? Aren't those the guys most likely to have better skills and info? Isn't it the rest of us who need your advice? Especially if we're "backcountry"? ............................................................... John, The reasons are these....but first, I believe that the best form of treatment is not to get bit in the first place. Should that fail, the next best is a set of car keys. Besides the youth, and adult scouters that come to this forum, there are others who view these boards to glean information, and who's outdoor skills could be lacking. This method requires training, the last thing I would want to hear is it being used by young scouts, or a greenhorn out on his first trek not fully aware of the problems that it could cause. Also, this technique is specific to the Mojave Green, and the Eastern Diamond Back, but could be used for the Western Diamond Back. It can only be used on the limbs, but might have some value for bites into the webbing of the hand or fingers. And, a lot of the items require an Rx....

I've had to deal with snakebites in the backcountry. If you're a MD, EMT, W-EMT, etc. pm me for my technique....

Is it really all that bad to be different?
le Voyageur replied to Cubmaster Jerry's topic in Open Discussion - Program
The amount of flexabilty in your program will come directly from you. It will be you who will be setting the standards for your staff to follow and implement in thier program areas. Thus, the amount of flexabilty in your program will depend on how much you can, or can not trust your staff. As a past Program Director, flexabilty ment knowing my staff, and trusting thier judgement. Use your staff training sessions to set the standards by being the example you would want your staff to follow, especially with the junior staff who are just starting out.... -

Is it really all that bad to be different?
le Voyageur replied to Cubmaster Jerry's topic in Open Discussion - Program
The problem with standards are that they are written in stone, but delivered in real time to real people who are not standardized to the same tune. Sometimes a jig, other times a reel, but the dance should include all. Keeping it in the ballroom only for the same old waltz will have folks stepping on toes.... -
I've always found this song to be rude, and violates the 5th point of the Scout Law....

At $761 for an 8'x9', they are pretty proud of their tents! Are they sewn with gold thread?.....SR540Beaver Nope...just sinew from the Golden Fleece;) btw...the tent is bombproof, and the silcon seal for the stove pipe works as stated...it's a serious tent for adverse conditions.
-
This is the tent that I'm refering to.... http://www.empirecanvasworks.com/bcstore/tents/snowtrekker/index.html mine is 8 x 9
-
This is a repeat of what I posted on the other thread..... For myself, I've been shifting back to more primative and traditional camping methods. Even though I have a nylon tent, my main tent is a canvas snow walker that can be heated with a small sheepherder stove (wood burning) inside the tent.
-
The solution is actually very simple. Use Zip Ztoves. Small backpackable woodburning (great with pine cone) stoves...However, the same rules that apply to campfires, applies to these stoves.

One of the best has already been mentioned. Hot chocolate with butter. However a thin grule of cream of wheat with one or two tablespoons of butter plus honey will also work. Also, I like a strong dark tea with butter, too. Also, pemmican made with ground jerky, Crisco, and maple sugar will also do the trick....

The two bag system is really not that much more expensive when considering the alternatives. As for weight, mine is around 4 pounds. The down bag (Moonstone) comes in at 3 lbs, and the syn bag (Haglof) at 1 lb. These two bags provides for a three bag system letting me mix and match for the seasons. If I'm really looking at some very serious cold weather, I will carry another down bag as insurance. Also, I've moved from the nylon tents back to a canvas snow walker tent that can be heated using a small sheepherder stove. All can be pulled on 2 board tobagan, or hauled in the canoe..

Made contact with my very first girlfriend from long long ago. I was 19 then, and headed out for my new job. Found this great site that's bringing back alot of those old memories of then, enjoy http://chu65nang67.us/nam/vietnam.html btw, I'm hoping that this summer I'll be able to take her, and her hubby out to dinner, and talk about that "Dear John" letter ....where did the years go?
-
Another possible elements is that you pitched yourself in a katabatic air space. Cold air being heavy, will flow downhill, and pool in hollows, and depressions. You might of exceeded the bag's temp rating if this was the case....
