  1. I agree with seabear. While a Life Scout, he must plan, develop, and give leadership. I don't think "give leadership" means to lead his parents to buy his Eagle. He has to plan and develop the project. How can he take credit if the parents do it for him?
  2. FOG I was just asked tonight about getting a V crew started at my church. We had one before and it fizzled because the leaders had to quit. I would like to involve the whole youth group, but the youth minister thinks it would just add to her duties. I know that just the opposite would be true. With district and council scheduled events, and the lower costs, not to mention the insurance and use of BSA facilities, for the life of me I can't understand why she is still opposed. Is there a selling point out there that we haven't used already? However now that I am the Scouting coordinator at the

  4. I'm 47, which seems to be the most popular, but only became so two days ago. Started in Cubs in 1963. I also have a grandson and he turned two back in August. To him I'm Poppie. I need to get him a uniform so he can match my son and me.
  5. We Kodiak Bears SR-389 were the best, brightest and probably had more fun than allowed at Woodbadge. We were in the last trditional course in our council. Our patrol became real close during those three outdoor weekends and patrol meetings in between. My tentmate and good friend Alan died last week due to cancer at age 50, but not before he received his beads. The two and one half hour wait at his visitation was a testiment to the kind of great guy he was. We miss him dearly. His wife and three sons, two of whom are still in scouts, need your prayers. Keep up the friendships with your patrol b
  6. Old Grey Congratulations to you and your patrol members completing the ticket. It seems like you were just posting about starting the course. All seven of my patrol members completed their 9 item tickets and no one finished in less than a year and a half. You guys are fast!
  7. I just had a Girl Scout leader ask if our scouts could help teach knots at a camporee they are having. I thought it was a great idea and would give my boys another chance at teaching. This is not the first interaction between the groups. Our troop has a dining-in around Christmas where the boys learn etiquette and the girls help serve the meal. Both groups seem to enjoy this. It's only fair that we return the favor. On the point of girl scout ranks and their equality to BSA ranks. The girls don't have ranks but progress along at age levels. The difference in Gold Award and Eagle is the Gold
  8. I believe that by your words and actions, the truth of who and what you are comes through. I never shrink from the question of my religion. I am a Christian. I was raised a Baptist and am now a member of the United Methodist Church which considers Scouting as a Ministry. I also am the president of the local chapter of the National Association of United Methodist Scouters and also serve as The Church district Scouting Coordinator.
  9. I was assuming Boy Scout Unit, so go to this site and pick the form you need. It is however for 2002. http://meritbadge.com/files/index.htm
  10. Check out this site. It should explain it for you. http://www.meritbadge.com/files/14-221.pdf
  11. It could be a bed-wetting problem and wants to protect his son from embarassment. You may ask the father in private.
  12. http://www.leconte-lodge.com/hiking.html Try this site. I hiked the Boulevard trail years ago and the only overnighting is the three sided bear shelters. Chain link fence in front. Trails may be too difficult for your younger scouts. It has beautiful views if your not in a cloud like I was. It has been at least twenty years since I was there.
  13. The only elected positions in the troop are SPL and PL. Each should choose their assistants. Some one they feel will be able to do the job and can work with. If they were elected, the PL or SPL might find himself trying to work with someone he can't get along with or can't handle the job. It might be a good time to start this practice. This problem would not have occurred, but it could still occur from the patrol members wanting the APL position and bribing the PL. The APL position, not being a required leadership position for advancement, might keep them from doing it. As far as the APL being

  15. Being raised here in the South, I was taught to say Sir and Mam. I would even say Sir? and Mam? to my kids when they were very small when I didn't hear them. It taught them that they should do it also. "What?" is considered to be bad manners. Our leaders are referred to by Mr. and Mrs. First names are not appropriate. Some of you who think Mr. or Mrs. makes you seem too old, need to get over it. You are trying to teach respect in Scouting. Scout troops are the place to make sure it happens. A kid saying Mr. or Mrs. and sir and mam, means they have good manners and doesn't mean your too old.
  16. You can look at this website www.usscouts.org/aboutbsa/bsfamous.html Who is George Bush II?
  17. Gardyloo As a BSA leader I was once repremanded for referring to Girl Scouts as GSA. So, I've been waiting on a chance to do the same to someone else. Girl Scouts are the GSUSA. Maybe the lifeguard patch could be placed on a bookbag that they take to the pool or lake. You know, the bag they carry their CD player and CDs in.
  18. emartinez Was your son in the Tiger Den last year or the Wolf Den? If he was in the Wolf Den and started late he may not have finished his Wolf rank requirements. He could have finished in the summer, but now that he has started the new year as a Bear Den member, he can't go back and get the Wolf Badge. Check with the Cubmaster and Den Leader from last year. The Pack awards the rank badges.
  19. I guess it would help to add the website address. That's how excited (or how old) I am. http://www.hikinghq.net/honor.html#Tom%20Hennessy
  20. I found one of the best websites on outdoor adventure around. It's not scouting related but a great source of knowledge. I especially enjoy his AT through hike planning page. Well thought out and many neat links to other sites. Check it out.
  21. Really gunked up dutch ovens are easily cleaned by just throwing them in the fire and burning the mess out. Remember to reseason the oven using the manufactures instructions. The more you use it the more seasoned it becomes, then the inside surface is almost stick free. A hint for not burning the top of breads, cakes or cobblers is to add the top coals about ten minutes after the bottom ones. This allows the food to cook more from the bottom. I prefer not using foil because the oven never gets seasoned the way I like it.

    Who can help?

No, this is green and gold world crest patch on the front. It is wool and well made. It certainly looks English. This is a 6 and 3/4 size.

    Who can help?

I've received an old scouting cap from a relative and need to know the origin. It's a wool dark green beanie type constrution that comes down lower in the back. It has a short bill and gold color beading around the bottom and six gold beadings down from the top button to the bottom beading. It has a green merit badge-size patch on the front with a gold world scouting crest. It reminds me of the old baseball style cap from field of dreams. Made by Philip Joseph and has a place on the inside label for a name and school. I'm thinking it's probably English but I don't know from what era. The name

One of my scout's Mother is very good with a sewing machine. Does anyone have a good pattern for a kilt? The ones I find on the web are pretty vague. Has anyone found good wool MacLaren tartan?
