  1. Went to ScoutStuff today to order merit badge books needed for summer camp and blue cards (100 pk). Well blue cards are now a restricted item. Why? This is silly to me but maybe someone with some wisdom can enlighten me. Pretty sure I ordered a pack last year maybe not. Thanks
  2. At most of the camps we have went to scouts are preregistered by an adult within the troop on what merit badges they wish to take at camp. Just part of the registration process. Have done registration as soon as we arrived at camp with the list. Could the failure to notice the age requirement fall upon the scout and adult within the troop? The scout should have at least looked at the requirements before they sign up for a class. Had a 11 yr old first year scout wanting to take Climbing MB however camp has 14 yr old as a limit to attend the class. Worked with the scout to select someth
  3. I went through one of our State Senators to get the Presidental letter. Took about 8 weeks. He is a scout friendley senator. Got his letter within a few days of email request. Just requested his office forward a request to the Presidential Office.
  4. I carry an Energizer Hard Case my hubby found at the local auto parts store for around 15.00. Takes my clutzy abuse and lots of bright light. fits in a pocket. Model number is TUF2AAP. It depends on wants/needs on what is good for you but I love the above.
  5. As a wife a nice shiny piece of jewelery is always welcome. LOL
  6. My older son was den chief for younger son's den and worked quite well. All the scouts loved him especially calling a 6'4" 260lb scout "Marshmellow" lol. That was his nickname. Oldest was a den chief for 3 years along with holding other positions within the troop. I think how well it will work depends on the Boy Scout.
  7. Thank you for what you do. Great story. Sounds like you are doing a Great Job.
  8. We take the overall from "manned" sales and give the scouts a share of the total. There are great and not so great slots that need manned. It depends on how many shares/hours they worked. The scout that works 6 hrs will get 6 shares while the scout that work 1 hour will get 1 share. Take total scout hours worked and divide that into total profit to get share/hour. Profit = Retail - cost.
  9. If a scout is ill a phone call needs to be made to his parent to come and get him. We always get 2 phone numbers from each scout. If a scout needs Dr/hospital I think I would let EMS transport/ give him care if it is that serious. Commom Sense
  10. Youngest son's Eagle book on the way to Texas!! He has worked especially hard to complete the Eagle requirements for the 100th Anniversary. So proud of him. Now I will have two mom's pins.
  11. We use the duty roster. It keeps those who are good at duck and covering to know what is expected of them. We have a few scouts who are just plain work horses and don't mind doing it. I think it shows them as a patrol they all need to pull their weight. Patrol leader on the campout takes care of keeping everyone on track.
  12. Back at cubs sign up we were asked to volunteer for an hour a week. They neglected to tell us that this was the time we have to our selves.LOL I have 21 yr old Eagle and 15 yr. old Life. Hubby and I have been involved since cubs. I am the paper pusher of the troop for lack of a better term. I just love the added paperwork and my time to recharter. NOT. I see the added assessment form what ever they choose to call it in a given year as a pain in the rear. How is this going to make my troop better? You turn in the form and no one ever speaks to you about what is on the form. My dist
  13. "Because he has a summer birthday we held him back a year before elementary school, so consequently he started 4th grade as a 10 year old and will start 5th grade at 11 years old." I am sure you had very good reasons for this and do not wish you to have to defend that decision. " But also, I sorta want him to get a "head start" on boy scouting, since he will only have until the end of his junior year in high school to complete all eagle requirements. Effectively he would have 6 months to a year less time than most boys." He has until he turns 18. If he is motivated 6 months will not ma
  14. In our troop as leaders we pay what it costs the scouts with the exception of summer camp where there is a discount for adults. We (adults) like to eat good. Love dutch oven meals. We do tack on $1.00/per person/campout for things like propane and etc. that gets used. Have in the past given gas money out of that to the only person that had a big enough pick up for the campout as we knew they were having a hard time absorbing the fuel cost. It all depends on your unit and what they have the funds for. Hubby is SM for our troop. We eat alot of gas him diving pick up and me a van. It'
  15. OK this morning have an adult who cannot do YP training because of a ERROR CODE 4 message. I have sent an email to National. Such bad timing for their system to take the time off. LOL
  16. "AFAIK, this should not affect you, as your recharter thru your council." emb021, My council's instructions tell us to go through MyScouting to recharter so I'm pretty sure this affects others as well. Pretty much sucks to be us. LOL
  17. Trying to get on National's website and have been unsuccessful. Anyone else able to get on? Trying to finish up the recharter and check YP training. Heck of a time to take a vacation. LOL
  18. As a member of a troop we do like to get them Feb./March to get used to relying on themselves at campouts. Every boy is different. It's nice to have the time to get to know the new scouts and their parents before we take them to summer camp as we do not go to our council camp. Some parents have doubts that their son can make it through a weekend without them. We don't doubt it but they do. Another plus is parents get to know the scouts and leaders in the troop. Our troop trys to do things with the Webelo den prior to crossover such as they came to camp with us last weekend on Sat
  19. I think what needs to to be answered if this is best for the scouts and adult leadership if this family returns? You not only welcome the scout back but also the parents. Sounds like a toxic mess waiting to happen. My two cents.
  20. What I am confused about the Individual National Outdoor Badge is where is this worn on uniform or is it placed in a box? I am looking for some guidence to pass on to our scouts who have earned a part of this award as to what they are allowed to do with it. I may be missing something in the printed materails that I have but I do not see where they can wear it. The National Outdoor Challenge Award is a troop award and different from what I am asking about. Bart since you see nothing confusing please point me to the printed materail that says what scouts are allowed to do with th
  21. I would have to vote no to the question. Have you ever tried to find an answer to anything on the National website? What a nightmare!! One question I have right now is where is the Outdoor Adventure patch that replaced the National Camping Award to go in a box or on the uniform? Waiting patiently for my DE to get back to me (sent him an email last Friday) checked National site, that was a waste of my time. If someone knows please post the site where it is available.
  22. Chippewa29 we utilize out Chaplian Aid every week to give a closing prayer to signal the end of the meeting. It works out very well and gives them more to do for their position. If the Chaplain Aid is absent we never have a shortage of scouts wanting to do the prayer.
  23. Have a talk with your District Executive (DE) he/she maybe be able to help those in true need with registration fees. Have you thought about another fundraiser? Don't know who sponser's your pack but maybe if they knew of the need they may help. Talk to your Charter Organization Rep. It is important to assess need on a case by case basis and to keep the information confidential. Only the leadership who needs to know does and keeps it confidential also. Not something I would broadcast at a committee meeting with names. Do not embarass anyone. Have you thought of maybe breaking th
