  1. It won't matter to the Dems. They are hell-bent on this health-care mess and are not going to stop. They will do whatever it takes to force this down our throats. We can only hope it will give the Republicans some spine if he wins.
  2. Wow, infoscouter, that's a great collection. Thanks for posting that.
  3. "The BSA commissioned a series of studies and developed an updated program to modernize Scouting in a manner similar to the changes of the British Boy Scout Association in 1967." At the 1969 BSA Jamboree, Lady B-P said what the Brits had done was "rather silly." She then proceeded to give the BSA all her B-P memorabilia. Turned out she was right on the first and wrong on the second because we followed with Urban Scouting shortly after that.
  4. I'm more concerned about the "rouge Scouts" mentioned in the park ranger thread. I wouldn't let anybody like that in my troop.
  5. It was a really bad idea and went along with some other bad ideas that came up about the same time. It took bringing Green Bar Bill out of retirement to write a new Scout Handbook and show them how to fix some of the problems. Personally, and I always hate it when old farts like me say this kind of stuff, but I don't think the BSA has ever completely recovered from that era. If you don't recall, that was the same period as pressure for membership growth generated by Boypower '76 caused professionals to create paper units and paper boys.
  6. I am constantly amazed. As a long-time Scoutmaster, I made a lot of judgment calls, some better than others, but I never worried over interpretation of requirements. Of course, there were a lot less of them in those days and no G2SS.
  7. I'd say the Scout Handbook is just expanding on what the site says in brief. Feel free to use your own judgment if you're the leader.
  8. Skeptic: From what I read on the Jamboree listserve, it varies from group to group. I contacted my group leader before I applied and we have stayed in touch all along. If you haven't already, I would suggest you sign up for the National Jamboree 2010 group at Yahoo by going to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Nationalbsajamboree2010/ In their files you can find most of the general information you need. You can also post your question on the list and perhaps get the specific answers you need. There are many people who are in the same position as you from what I have seen. Lots of complai
  9. "Let me get this straight, you have to pay to be on staff at the Jamoroee?" LOL, yep or any other Jamboree. We do the work and pay for the privilege.
  10. "I took that to mean that George Witton had one point of view (which was used for the script) while the incident may not have really registered on the historical radar." Certainly Witton's point of view would have to be considered biased. I have found very little about the incident in all the histories of the Boer War that I have read. From what I know of the British Army in those days and the Boer War in particular, I find the movie story very credible. Of course, the men could not be considered innocent, but seems to me they got a raw deal, especially in view of the fact that the Eng
  11. "Would it be appropriate to wear the Eagle award Silver Medal as an Adult Scouter in uniform at say an Eagle COH?" Yes, it would, at an Eagle Court of Honor or other Eagle related event. Normally, no. Incidentally, I wear my military miniature medals more than most because I go to Scottish dress events where they follow the British tradition, and the occasional military formal event. I don't think the cost of making miniature Scouting medals would be within reason for the numbers of people who would wear them. I can't think of any event where I would have ever worn them.
  12. The movie Breaker Morant was originally a stage play. The script and most of the background was based on the book Scapegoats of the Empire, by George Witton, the third Bushveldt Caribineer officer tried and given a commutation by Kitchener. A reprint of the book is available at Amazon.com. The movie is pretty true to the facts of the case (apart from the fact the "The Breaker" was not quite as likable as Woodward's character), which was well documented at the time. There is, as far as I'm aware, not much argument that the three officers were in fact guilty only of doing what Kitchener w
  13. "If my faith is based on a reverence for the earth and all things natural, it is not a true religion because it doesn't focus on a single sky god" That isn't the definition of religion. Merriam Webster: 1 a : the state of a religious b (1) : the service and worship of God or the supernatural (2) : commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance 2 : a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices 3 archaic : scrupulous conformity : conscientiousness 4 : a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith I a
  14. Speaking of Christmas presents, a former Scout sent this link along. Now your Scouts can carry their handbook and study the Scout Law while texting their friends (yeah, right). http://www.appstorehq.com/theboyscouthandbook-iphone-68344/app(This message has been edited by kahuna)
  15. July Zogby poll: 52% against, 40% for the bills as they were at the time. Zogby is no conservative.
  16. I think you can get kind of carried away with this stuff. The Y is a public place. The dressing room situation is what ever it is, but there's no reason that I know of that adults and boys can't change clothes in the same dressing room in a situation like that, as long as the other guidelines are followed. I think biggest concern I'd have would be protection of the boys among other adults and older boys who aren't Scouts or Scouters. Seems to me it's just a matter of supervision. I don't have my copy of G2SS handy, since I don't work directly with boys anymore, but I don't think there's a
  17. "Wow, what could anyone possibly add to that?" LOL, the man is SO eloquent! No wonder he's the Imperial Klaxon.
  18. That's amazing, but it's interesting to note the hecklers apparently far outnumbered the Klan people. "The Klan said it was protesting over lost Southern symbolism at Ole Miss, which has been rocked by racial strife before." Boy, has it. I was a student there in 1962 when James Meredith was enrolled. That was unbelievable. Incidentally, in my research I noted that the National Capital Area Council was among the first to deal with "colored Scouts" in a meaningful way. The council had hired a Black professional before WWII. Like everywhere else, the Scouts were segregated in
  19. 2)Does someone who is a Sea Scout Skipper wear the Venturing Seavice or the Sea Scout Device? The Sea Scout device would be appropriate, although I think technically you could wear the Venturing one. But why would you want to? 3) Can someone who earned it as a Venturing Adviser earn it a second time as a Sea Scout Skipper, since Sea Scouts falls under Venturing, and Vice versa? Yes, you can. Then you can wear both devices.
  20. "Someone at national screwed up as #1 they left out Sea Scouts ( although an argument can be made that they are included under Venturing)" Agreed they screwed up and while it's a kind of insult, Sea Scout Skippers ARE part of Venturing, so whatever applies to them applies to us.
  21. Stupid is as stupid does. Forrest's mom is right again.
  22. I don't have any old Scouting magazines, but I'll keep my eyes open. Our public library has a lot of them on microfilm, so when my research takes me there next, I'll have a look. Actually, I don't need any more info for my research, because so much of Adams' booklet is about the Jamboree. But I find these little events interesting. Thanks again, skeptic.
  23. Actually, the Scouts themselves reflected the culture they were raised in. Scouts in the South in the early Sixties did not want to camp, eat or socialize with black kids. I'm sure there were some exceptions, but in general, they felt the same as their culture. That was the reason that the councils I was in during that time had separate camps, even though the camping season didn't overlap. The kids would not have wanted to use the same tents and bunks as the black kids. It sounds crazy, looking back on it, but that's the way it was. In fact, they used the same stuff, which was moved over
  24. Watching that would be too much like watching one of those Titanic movies where you know the outcome is hitting the iceberg and sinking and not being able to do anything about it.
