  1. Packsaddle writes: "So what is the motivation for pursuing a career in scouting?" In my case, the best I can tell you is the movie line relating to the man who stripped naked and jumped into a mess of cactus: It seemed like a good idea at the time. The real question is why it took me five years to start pulling out the spines.
  2. Well, problem solved. I did a search on eBay - should have thought of that first - and turned up a couple of pair identical to these which are advertised as 1970's vintage. Thanks for all the input.
  3. The label doesn't say what they are, but the washing instructions are standard wash and wear. Certainly cotton, but maybe something else too.
  4. Hmmmmm, ljnrsu, you may be right. I must have some photos from that era someplace. I have handbooks from that period, but they didn't use photos, just drawings and the details of uniforms are hard to make out.
  5. Eagle92: They're not poly wool, definitely. I own a set of those and you're right, they do have that kind of closure, but these are cotton and the buttons are not even close. Nor is the color for that matter.
  6. Okay, this is for those who know more about uniforms than I: I've come into possession of a pair of shorts that purport to be BSA, but are not like any I've seen. They do have a BSA label on the inside, sewed at one end into the zipper flap. They resemble the normal ODLR varieties I've seen, but the color is almost the shade of the 1950's - 1960's uniforms. Really odd to me is that there is no cargo pocket on top of the main right and left pockets and the back pockets are almost square, have rectangular, not V-shaped, flaps and buttons that say "Boy Scouts of America." However, unlike the
  7. "I would shadow a DE if possible" I definitely would ditto that. Good luck through the whole process.
  8. From what I understand these are primarily sales events. That doesn't mean they won't make interesting looking. There are some really major sellers of Scouting memorabilia scheduled to be at these. From what little I know of staffing - this is my first time - you can go wherever you want on your day off or whatever time off you have. I'm sure other staffers will be going into Fredericksburg during the Jambo (those who have cars stored where they can access them). According to the ad in the ISCA Journal, the one at the Eagles Lodge will be open Friday, July 23d, from 3 p.m. until 1 a.m
  9. Enterprise has an office in Arlington and you can rent a car for about $40 for 24 hours. The problem you'll face is rush hour in the morning, unless you go on a weekend. If you leave around nine a.m., you'd be pretty much clear and would have the car until the same time next day. Just a thought.
  10. I can't speak for others, but my district was the Wekiwa District before the original breakup and then became Wekiwa again after the second redistribution. Now we're Seminole Trails because everybody on the District Committee except me at the organization meeting wanted that name. Seemed to me that since the Wekiwa River, park and Wekiwa River Basin covers most of the district, it should have stayed Wekiwa and add Trails if you want. I have no idea why they wanted that, just sounded good, I guess.
  11. Great thread. I'm always amazed by the fact that 20 years ago, there were always kids roaming around the neighborhood where I live. Now, you rarely see any. Lots still live here because I see them en route to school and home again. Part of it is parental fear of letting the kids out of sight, I think. Part is due to video games, music and computers. But I suspect some of it has to do with the fact that kids just don't know what to do with themselves if they don't have some definite goal in mind.
  12. "I'm in Seminole Springs District myself." Yeah, me too. You're right about Harry Potter World. I'd like to see it and one day I will, but out of season and definitely out of this season.
  13. UCEagle: I did look at the website, but didn't see that. It's a great deal for CFC Scouts. That was my first visit down to that store, since I live on the North end of town (Seminole County) and avoid the tourist areas like the plague. My car had to go in to the dealer which is near the Millenia Mall, so I killed two birds with one stone. It's always interesting to go down there to I Drive and watch tourists. eaglescout1996: I can see why you'd miss Central Florida living in Atlanta. I haven't been out to La No Che in years. I know it's changed completely in the last 10 years or
  14. Well, I got my charcoal 8-pocket Redhead shorts for $14.99 at Bass Pro Outdoor World. They are close enough that I don't think anyone would ever question them. Of great interest was the place itself. Being located in the International Drive discount Mecca of Orlando the place is big enough to sell airplanes (I didn't see any). You could spend an hour just looking around the store and probably several hours people watching. I didn't have several hours, but I did spend an hour both store and people watching. Thanks again for the advice.
  15. Thanks guys. I'm going to be in the neighborhood of our local Bass Pro Shop tomorrow and will look for some of those shorts. Results to follow.
  16. Well, I blew it again. I didn't get "old" Venturing shorts at $16 until they were down to the really skinny and the really obese. I seem to recall some posts about alternative sources for cargo shorts that look official enough to pass muster at the Jamboree. Call me a curmudgeon, but I do not, repeat not, wish to wear any of the new shorts at all. Can somebody suggest a source at reasonable prices? Thanks.
  17. Rockers, schmockers! Tell the kids to do whatever turns them on. It's their jamboree. Disclaimer: I'm on the MB Midway, but I don't care if they come get MB's or whatever. It's a Jamboree, not a contest. In ten years, the rockers will mean nothing, but the experience of the Jambo will mean a heck of lot. Speaking from experience.
  18. The majority of my Facebook friends are former Scouts who are now in their thirties or older, and other people I know through Scouting. Kind of nice to keep in touch that way and I've been proud of how well my "boys" are doing.
  19. Although they say dry clean only, the shirts can be washed in cold water and dried at low temps. At least the ones I had could. I don't remember if they pants were ever laundered, but I think I had them dry cleaned. That uniform, usually with shorts, was the one GBB always wore.
  20. I'm glad to see they put this back in the catalog. Those are great uniforms for regular meetings and ceremonies. I had one of those shirts that I bought when the ODLR uniform first came out and wore it for over 15 years. I still have it, but it won't accommodate my belly anymore.
  21. "he had whittled the choices down to either a fleur-de-lis or frog legs" Wow! If we're unpopular with some groups because of God and Gays, just think what would happen if we had a symbol like that? PETA would be all over us.
  22. Why do you suppose that the Big Brother organization, now Big Brothers/Big Sisters, has been around longer than the BSA? Boys need male role models in their lives.
  23. Asked the guy in our Scout Shop today about it. I bought one of the current shirts for the Jamboree. He said there are rumors and they are being careful not to overstock. The rumors seem to run in the direction of a dark green shirt with the same crap the new Centennial shirt has on it. I don't want one, thank you very much. Spent $150 today on stuff I'll probably never wear again after August. And I still have to pay somebody to sew on all the badges. (This message has been edited by kahuna)
  24. Hmmmmm, I think you either have to get a new sponsor or create a 501©(3). Maybe others will have a better idea. Do you have a lawyer among your parents? You can do it through LegalZoom, but it's not cheap.
