  1. After cutting the PVC into 2 inch lengths, I drilled a few random holes in the sides, and had my Cubbies do the sanding. Then they used brown and black sharpies to color bark onto the PVC surface. The great thing about PVC slides is THEY DON'T FALL OFF like the official slide...
  2. 441: Thanks for you answers above; you've convinced me that you can play. But you haven't convinced me that you are qualified to teach the MB. Defining the word 'en passant' does not tell your students anything about the move and the conditions under which it can be used. Good luck.
  3. That describes the various Baden-Powell Scouts associations, except they are based on B-P's more rugged Patrol System and badge requirements, with the specific year of either 1938 or 1965. Schiff: Super Scout? http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=290790&highlight=Scouts
  4. To wit: I'd like to see a Scout's written explanation of 'en passant' for chess. Or a knight's movement range. Somethings you gotta communicate in person.
  5. I'm trying to figure out what the boy will do to participate in two packs. Does he do everything twice, once in each pack? Does he use two books to keep straight what he's done where?
  6. Piling on 441, could you help us feel better about your credentials by providing some basic MBC information: 1- How many years have you been teaching Chess? 2- How many classes a year do you teach? What is the average size of your classes? 3- Have any of your students placed well in competition after your classes? 4- How many tournaments of what size have you personally played in? 5- What's your highest finish? 6- Who was your Chess mentor, and what is his playing history? Thank you for your help.

  8. KDD's point is that YOU will be the adult they associate with. Despite your ability to observe the 'big picture', those scouts will not benefit from association with a seasoned chess master.
  9. If when you say: " kill a wild boar with their bear hands " you're talking about 3rd grade Cub Scouts, I like your pack! Sorry, double entendres are a special interest of mine...
  10. What would they tax? Popcorn sales? Dues? Ad Valorem tax on tents? Ain't no money anywhere...
  11. Won the Governor's Honors chess tournament in 1971. It wasn't because I was smart; it was because I was sneaky! I really enjoyed deflating those perfect SAT scores.
  12. Taught the square knot and two half hitches. Finished with a group activity of tying the instructor to a chair. The young ones enjoyed that.
  13. In defense of some posters, it's not immediately apparent that 441 is a youth. Some of his other posts on other topics imply an adult perspective. BUT, once he revealed his age, we should have been more sensitive to his position. Thank you SR540Beaver.

  15. I got the big honking multi-tool from the Scoutshop: http://www.scoutstuff.org/bsa/camping/knives-accessories/knives/four-inch-multi-tool.html It too big to carry, so it rides in the car. If he doesn't have a good Leatherman, this one with the belt clip lives with me: http://www.leatherman.com/product/Sideclip
  16. Matt, What part of the country are you in? Need help? I think you're traveling the right path.
  17. Hey Merlyn, I'm still trying to figure out what you're trying to accomplish. Do you think you are convincing anyone to come over to your point of view?
  18. Wolf Achievement 11: DUTY TO GOD (Page 94) Complete the Character Connection for Faith Know. What is "faith"? 19. Father has resigned ? Good. Don't let him come back. Promote an adult oriented ASM to CC. Son no longer has his father around to enable his abusive behavior? Be nice or be gone! Life is too short to put up with nasty people.
  20. I don't see anyone advocating DUI, with or without kids in the cars. Or advocating drinking in the presence of children and then setting the very bad example of driving. Does anyone think that's okay? Anyone?
  21. Some of the judgmental comments in this thread are depressing. I'm disappointed that some of my forum buddies are so intolerant and quick to condemn. Makes me want to have a drink....
  22. "We've been told we are not allowed to hold scout meetings at all until this gets sorted out." - I'm a scofflaw. So don't hold Scout meetings; invite his former den-mates over for a little 'Bean-Counting'. Don't wear the uniform, but you can do things in the book (that you may want to sign off on later). Adult incompetence should never be allowed to penalize the program for the boys.
  23. There are so many other names that a youth group of 'hackers' could use. Why choose 'Scouts' if they weren't trying to get mileage from BSA's brand? (Note: This is probably the first and last time that I'll ever agree with Irving on something!)
  24. Visit the other pack, and then ask your son what he wants to do. It's his scouting experience. You may consider visiting as a group with your total 6 boys. If 4 of your 6 boys are all in 5th grade, then you really don't have a pack. The 5th graders aren't gonna hang with the 1st grade Tigers. The Tigers will have no Wolves and Bears to emulate, so they'll either drop out or go to the active pack. Listen cautiously to your DE. His compensation may be based somewhat on keeping your pack alive (numbers!) and taint his vision of what is best for your boys.
  25. Merlyn, I'm just curious. What drives you to carry the atheist torch so passionately? Here's why I ask: I associate passion more with religious folks (emotional need to fill an unexplained void), and I associate reason with atheists (cold hard facts that God exists?). But you seem to be passionately atheist, and I have trouble wrapping my mind around that.
