  1. Actually, being in the back country would seem to be preferable to being in the city when civilization fails. At least you won't have to be immediately concerned over your neighbors trying to kill you for your food and gasoline.
  2. You're probably tempted to ignore the situation since the boy won't be your problem after January. But you have to consider the example that sets for the other boys in your den. They know what CM's child has and has not done... "Also, your Webelos Den Leader will now sign off your activities (your parent or guardian does not sign off the activities as they did when you were a Wolf or Bear)." http://usscouts.org/advance/cubscout/webelos.asp
  3. More like you've gotten $14.1 Trillion worth of hamburgers YESTERDAY and are refusing to pay. And have the gall to ask for more hamburgers...
  4. "I'll gladly pay you tomorrow for a hamburger today..."
  5. Tidbit: Obama in 2006: "The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure." At that time the National Debt was a mere $9 trillion. Have you heard any Dem say by how much they want to increase the debt ceiling? One trillion dollars to get them through the 2014 election cycle (I rounded up from $988 Billion...). Are we going to let Obama double the debt before he's out of office? ($9T in 2006, $14.4T in 2013, add $1T for 2014, $1T for 2015...) Frustration: This is like arguing with a teenager who refuses to believe that their bank account is overdrawn: "I can't be out of money! I have more checks!" Liberal members of the media, congress, and this forum are all relying on emotion to make their argument. All emotion and personal vitriol, no ability to face facts. "It's never been done before!" Wrong - 27 times since 1976. "Federal workers are going without a paycheck!" Yes. I feel bad for them. But many of them really need to start looking at the private sector and adjusting their long range plans. Hopefully they're smart enough to realize that, mathematically, the Fed cannot keep spending money at the current pace. There are not enough rich people to punish to pay the bills. To my fellow conservatives: I'm pretty sure that we're not going to change any minds in here. They're not thinking.
  6. KDD. Tea Party rallies were never violent or hateful. The one time that a black congressman alleged that he was spit on by Tea Party members was blown out the water by the absence of proof from any of the 20 recordings of the walk and NO witnesses. I participated in a Tea Party rally in Atlanta, and nowhere else have I seen nicer more patriotic people (of many colors) so genuinely concerned about the future of our country. Your 'Teabagger' slur is ill-informed and reflects poorly on your Scout Spirit; and eliminates you as a credible participant in serious discussion. To other forum members: I apologize for bringing political comment to the 'Program' forum. My sense of decorum was overcome by my outrage at ignorance.
  7. FWIW: I don't toss and turn at all in my hammock. And I also don't need to use the CPAP to not snore in the hammock. I think it's the elevated airway/head position. That doesn't mean that I don't still stop breathing, but I don't snore and sleep better in my hammock than I do my bed at home.

    VIRTUS

Yes, required of everyone. And you have to update it like YPT. First time we had a take home video. The last time it was an online presentation that wasn't so long. If you let it run in the background with the speakers turned low, you're still trustworthy when you sign the statement saying you watched it...
  9. No my dear Moosetracker, I do know what's going on. It's that slow drawl in the way I talk that has convinced you that I'm stupid. We Southerners have been using that camouflage for many years to take advantage of those that underestimate us.. I don't have time to hunt down the actual quote, but roughly paraphrasing the Dem talking head that said it: "The battle over raising the debt ceiling coming up in two weeks. We may as well have that fight now." And to quote Obama "I will not negotiate with Republicans over paying our nation's debt." All this from a man who hasn't signed a budget in five years. How many votes did Obama's last budget proposal get in the senate? One? Don't let the calm in this echo chamber convince you that the US can continue to spend until our debt is twice our GDP. How do you propose we ever wean congress from the borrowing teat?
  10. Oh yeah, asking for an extension on the debt ceiling BEFORE you'll even talk about the shutdown is really an attempt at compromise. If we don't stop routinely raising the debt ceiling, the international community (China?) will do it for us. The fed cannot keep spending money that we don't have. But the Dems don't want to talk about that...
  11. Horizon, just curious; where do you get your news? Reid and Obama are the ones saying. I repeat SAYING, that they will not negotiate. Not on the medical device tax. Not on the exemptions for congress that were prohibited in the bill, but they took out after it passed. Not on delaying the individual mandate for a year (that Obama illegally gave to big business.) The Obama admin has changed the ACA more than 20 times unilaterally; but they say that they won't negotiate on Repub requests "because it's the law"? Pure power politics. I just hope the Repubs stand their ground for a change and we don't reimburse back salaries to the non-essential federal workers.
  12. Ding Dong: What examples of the Right abusing the Bill of Rights can you share?
  13. 1- How or when is the US gonna stop borrowing money to spend on non-essential services? Maybe this shutdown will highlight just how much we can live without. Eventually our money is gonna be worthless, so the sooner we face that we're spending too much; the better chance we have that our republic will survive. Our grandchildren already have a big enough bill to pay. 2- The Dems had two years, 08-10, when they controlled the government. The electorate became so alarmed at their free spending ways that they elected Repubs to the house in 10 and again in 12. The house is the division that spends money. So, yes, elections have consequences. For the Dems to now refuse to negotiate with the body that is constitutionally in charge of the purse strings is a facetious tantrum, devoid of logic, enabled by a biased media.
  14. True, Right Wing Nuts can be provoked by Left Wing Nuts. The rhetorical vitriol just fuels the insanity. 1- With the debt ceiling approaching... OOPS! Wrong forum. I should have realized that the discussion in here was being too logical.
  15. Over-reach theatre: http://www.infowars.com/barrycades-government-tries-to-shut-down-privately-owned-mount-vernon/ In some cases, efforts to shut down these sites actually require more manpower and resources than if they had been left open, highlighting the fact that this is an act of partisan theater by the Obama administration to pin the blame for the government shutdown on Republicans and opponents of Obamacare.
  16. KDD: Jefferson was Christian. Even though he openly expressed some honest doubts, he remained a practicing Christian: "During the first winter, Mr. Jefferson regularly attended service on the sabbath-day in the humble church. The congregation seldom exceeded 50 or 60, but generally consisted of about a score of hearers. He could have had no motive for this regular attendance, but that of respect for public worship, choice of place or preacher he had not, as this, with the exception of a little Catholic chapel was the only church in the new city. The custom of preaching in the Hall of Representatives had not then been attempted, though after it was established Mr. Jefferson during his whole administration, was a most regular attendant. The seat he chose the first sabbath, and the adjoining one, which his private secretary occupied, were ever afterwards by the courtesy of the congregation, left for him and his secretary." http://www.monticello.org/site/research-and-collections/jeffersons-religious-beliefs
  17. I see your point on the reservation services, especially if this goes long term. Can you give me insight into the logic of having 7 personnel to guard the barricades they set up to close the monuments in DC that usually have 5 police doing nothing?
  18. jps: Proud of you! If we don't stand up to lower standards, it means that we agree with them. With the paper-pushers on top squirting out Eagles like diarrhea, the least we can do is speak up. The best thing is to participate in the board and ask informed questions. Avoiding conflict in this case is not "Doing your best."
  19. I bet it took special effort to turn off the webpages. Recon the employees are afraid we won't miss them?
  20. I've been using the same $4 tarp for 2 years now. It doesn't pack too well; larger than the whole rest of the hammock. I'm thinking of upgrading to a fly. But if you're not sure you want to commit to being a tree-hanger, go with the tarp first. You can always re-purpose it over your woodpile...
  21. We have 3 patrols. Every year we'll split the new boys and add them to the two patrols with the lowest numbers. That way the new guys have some of their friends with them, and we spread the ages. And if the WeebII leader tells us that X doesn't get along with Y, we'll slip them into separate patrols. It's working okay so far, but I don't have a lot of history to report yet. We try to keep the patrols together in every activity that we can, to strengthen their identity. But there are times that we still mix ad hoc to make a game or a low attendance trip work.
  22. I said this: "Besides, females sleep elsewhere in seperate campsites/areas" Um....what is the difference? It's seperate. A campsite can be on the other site of a trail or 15 feet away. And that's how you split hairs.... I'm thinking a sleeping bag might be defined as a sleeping facility.
  23. The best thing about a timber hitch is that you can UNtie it after pulling heavy loads. Most of the other knots cinch tight. When you take the pressure off a timber hitch, it falls apart.
  24. The former 'Hacker Scouts' could do more damage to BSA by leaving their current servers running!
