  1. Anybody else notice how quiet this topic has become on the board? http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_24593942/board-strife-colorado-exchange-far-behind-projected-enrollment
  2. Since pictures aren't convincing you, let's try function. (Hey, I argued vehemently that a Thieve's Knot http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=thieve%27s+knot&id=FB66B87C963177DB87845E008DD748C72E64429E&FORM=IQFRBA was just another Square Knot, until I was show how they functioned differently.) A clove hitch only stays tight if tension on the working end stays in the direction that it leaves the knot. If you pull the working end of a clove hitch perpendicular to the knot, or back against the knot, a clove hitch comes untied. Don't believe me? Using a nylon line, tie a canoe bobbing in the current to a round steel post with a clove hitch. Don't be gone longer than five minutes! Two half hitches, whether tied the regular way or with the second hitch reversed for a neater appearance, will not loosen with tension from any direction.
  3. Eh. No. http://www.sailingcourse.com/videos/clove_hitch.htm http://www.bollweeviltroop99.com/content/images/two_half_hitches_web.jpg
  4. ≠looks like a clove hitch to me.
  5. ._ [_] = Square Knot (I know, you could have figured it out, but I needed characters to post.)
  6. Our Pack usually did the Veterans' Day Parade. Walked at the head of the line with our banner, and passed out candy provided by the VA. Enterprising little Cub Scouts started throwing the candy to kids sitting on the curb. Then they started throwing candy AT the homeless people panhandling the event...
  7. Do bears like their burritos cooked?
  8. Hammock in cold weather: Update. 25 degrees in a steady 15 MPH on Mount Yonah. I knew the hammock would be cold, but I couldn't justify investing in an underquilt for one trip per year in Georgia. Hiking up 1000 feet with water for 2 days made weight a big concern. Cold shoulders: Usually a single Thermarest under me in the hammock keeps the cold out, but my shoulders push against the sides of the hammock/sleeping bag and make a cold spot. This trip I took two scraps of minicell foam (actually scraps from the interlocking soft flooring you see at home stores) and positioned them next to my shoulders against the wall of the hammock. It took a little bit of wriggling around to keep the foam in place and zip up the mummy bag to my nose, but my shoulders were just fine! The added weight of the foam was negligible. Wind: I didn't want to listen to the rattling of my cheap nylon tarp in the constant wind, so I left it at home. Instead, I used an army surplus canvas shelter half. (Half of a pup-tent) It worked great! The ends of the shelter half were the same length as my hammock, so they attached to the same biners that I use to attach the hammock. On the foot end, I attached the two sides to each other under the hammock with a bungee cord. At the head end, I clipped a carabiner on each side, so that I could get in and out; but the weight of the biners was enough to hold the canvas down. The wind did not penetrate my cocoon. The second night I had to un-zip some because I was sweating. Caveat: the shelter half weighs about 3 times as much as a small tarp.
  9. I think that any bureaucratic restriction on late fundraising is just red tape. Organizing an Eagle project doesn't give a Scout the ability to forecast how much money donors will give. If parents are willing to advance funding to keep a project on schedule, what is wrong with them expecting some reimbursement? To assume that parents' loans are automatically a donation is nonsensical, and a burden on less wealthy parents. We want our Eagles to stay involved with the troop, right? If they have to continue fund raising to pay off their Eagle project, they have a financial interest to hang around. To say that "Your Eagle project is done. Over. End of story. Quit. You can't work on that anymore!" is to drive the boys away. Some of the projects that we're writing up now include a maintenance contract asking the scout to re-visit his project after a year to assure that it's holding up as planned, and to correct any failures. (Raised gardening beds for a school.)
  10. "EDGE Training is valid for three years." In typical BSA 'redundant training is required' mode, after you have three years experience using EDGE; your brain suddenly forgets all your experience and you need to be re-trained.
  11. I'm with you, TwoCub. How can you extend a snappy acronym like EDGE? For even 20 minutes? E - Enter the room X - X-ray your students brains. P - Puff up your tail feathers. L - List your credentials A - Affirm the value of repetitive training. I - Inform the class of your objective, (Alternate: Inflate your ego.) N - Now you can move to the Demonstration... Y'all take it from here.
  12. And if you really do care about the numbers: "Did HHS estimate that 93 million Americans will lose their insurance plans?" http://hotair.com/archives/2013/10/31/did-hhs-estimate-that-93-million-americans-will-lose-their-insurance/ "The HHS analysis of the markets and the impact of ObamaCare on plan offerings was not limited to just the individual markets. When the employer mandate gets enforced for the 2015 enrollment, as many as 93 million Americans may find that their job-provided coverage will go the way of the individual plans this year"
  13. Rick: I paraphrased the headline: "Health Insurance Losses to Get Worse: 51 Percent to Lose Employer Based Insurance", and did some rudimentary math using a percentage value dead in the middle of the CBO high/low estimate. I never wrote: "not having insurance". You did. Is there a 'Reading Skills' merit badge?
  14. Rick: Lemme help you with the numbers: “The Departments’ mid-range estimate is that 66 percent of small employer plans and 45 percent of large employer plans will relinquish their grandfather status by the end of 2013,†wrote the administration on page 34,552 of the Register. All in all, more than half of employer-sponsored plans will lose their “grandfather status†and get canceled. According to the Congressional Budget Office, 156 million Americansâ€â€more than half the populationâ€â€was covered by employer-sponsored insurance in 2013." 51% of 156,000,000 = 79,560,000 "Another 25 million people, according to the CBO, have “nongroup and other†forms of insurance; that is to say, they participate in the market for individually-purchased insurance. In this market, the administration projected that “40 to 67 percent†of individually-purchased plans would lose their Obamacare-sanctioned “grandfather status†and get canceled, " 53.5% of 25,000,000 = 13,375,000 79,560,000 + 13,375,000 = 92,935,000. Is it scare mongering to round up to 93 million? Not scare mongering, facing the fish (ACA) monger.
  15. Interesting numbers coming out today: 6 - Excited Obamacare devotees enrolled on the first day. 39,000 per day needed to reach critical mass. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18563_162-57610328/obamacare-enrollments-got-off-to-very-slow-start-documents-show/ 93,000,000 - CBO estimates that will have lose their Employer provided insurance in 2014, despite the prez promising otherwise: http://townhall.com/tipsheet/katiepavlich/2013/10/31/health-insurance-losses-to-get-worse-with-employer-mandate-looming-n1733796
  16. "serve actively 6 months in one or more of the positions of responsibility..." I think the troop gets to determine when that service begins and what constitutes serving.
  17. dcssimmons: Libby did NOT out Plame. "No evidence has ever come to light that Mr. Libby disclosed Plame's CIA status to Mr. Novak, or anyone else." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerie_Plame Go after Richard Armitage (never punished) "Mr. Armitage have has confirmed that he was the initial and primary source for the columnist, Robert D. Novak, whose column of July 14, 2003, identified Valerie Wilson as a Central Intelligence Agency officer. " http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F00614F93A5A0C738FDDA10894DE404482 Try to keep it factual. please?
  18. " Make a fair wage and pay a fair price for medical care IF you can afford it. If not, the market and life will make the correction" .Agree.
  19. High drug costs in the US = money in lawyers pocket. Other countries don't have the litigation habit of the US, so the same drugs can be sold for less.
  20. Did Moose sell anybody on the ACA with that carefully worded reply? I'm not trying to scare anyone - I'm the one who is afraid. If the results produced by the US Govt's effort to run healthcare so far are not scaring you, you are not paying attention. Since I'm sure to be lumped into the 'Smuckka head' category and 'someone wants to spew falsehoods', please reconcile just one provable fact: Obama 2010: "if you like your insurance plan, you will keep it" http://newsbusters.org/blogs/matthew-balan/2013/10/25/cbs-horror-story-discredits-obamas-reassuring-phrase-about-keeping-he - vs - "8 million people will be dropped from their employer's insurance plans" http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/finance/2013/February/CBO-Millions-to-Lose-Insurance-Under-Obamacare/ The latest estimate was 18 Million will lose their plans.
  21. Hzn: You forgot the lawyers and defensive medicine costs...
  22. [h=2]CBS Uncovers ‘Serious’, ‘Incredibly Misleading’ ObamaCare Website Price Quotes[/h] The CBS journalist soon detailed the grossly inaccurate price quotes that came out of HealthCare.gov: http://www.nationalrighttolifenews.org/news/2013/10/cbs-uncovers-serious-incredibly-misleading-obamacare-website-price-quotes/#.UmgjePmsjTo
  23. For Hammock, I use web runners and carabiners. To adjust tighter I'll make extra loops around the biners. For longer spans, I can add loops of rope. The key for hanging a hammock is to be able to UNTIE your ropes after hanging your weight on the knots all night.
  24. Logic paraphrased form another site: Obamacare 's financial success depends upon: 1. Healthy young people with part time, minimum wage jobs, 2. buying something they don't see a need for, 3. and can't afford, 4. with money they don't have, 5. while they're still eligible to remain on their parents' insurance until age 26, 6. through a website that DOESN'T WORK!!! Ponzi or Pyramid?
  25. 'Taking the country hostage' is LiberalSpeak for having a position other that the Dems. 'Gutting the ACA' is LiberalSpeak for delaying the individual mandate, if Republicans ask for the delay. Did you call it 'Gutting the ACA' when PrezBo delayed the business mandate? What are you going to call it when PrezBo delays the individual mandate? "A badly needed repair for lingering 'Bush's fault'"?
