  1. In our area OA activities suplement but never replace. If there is a conflict the troop activity wins. james
  2. I would ask the boys who are not supporting the SPL what parts of thier scout oath and the scout law they are breaking. If you want to be scouts you have to live up to your promise or at least make a real effort to live up to it. A scout is friendly -> is teasing the SPL friendly A scout is courtious -> is begin disrespectful to other scouts courtious A scout is kind....... when you joined scouting you promised or your honor you would obey the scout law. If this is an example of your honor.... The kids need to know that honor is real. If you never call them on it they will never gain it. James
  3. " If those problems exist with female leaders in other troops, those are training problems, not gender problems. " Now we have the real problem identified "Training" JC
  4. Thank Bob By the way there is a typo the bucket has over 1000 feet not 100 as I earlier posted. James
  5. In my troop women can come along if there are 2 of them and there is some privacy for them. (this is for their and the other male leaders protection) just like SM's don't sleep in the same tent as the boys. Our problem is that the mom's don't know that they can go. We have one mom, that when she comes to any activity makes it abotu 100 times better Jc
  6. People are people. No matter where you go people have the same problems they had in 1200 BC. You can only control you. In my short time in scouting I have seen more people problems than I would care for. Now back to SPL issue Some suggested requirements are Rank (Life) attendance at least 80% in uniform. And example of how to follow the scout law. At least 1 scout camp using requirements like these, have the boys vote on the boys who meet these requirements be the canidits. jc(This message has been edited by james_clegg)
  7. training particularly for the adults was a key. I agree Setting tradtion is also key
  8. Isn't there a camping requirement for the quailty unit patch? jc
  9. Don't forget things that allow people to stand up about very 40 min. Songs, or a show and tell what we did since the last COH jc
  10. The Differences I Like most in my wife are. Multi Tasking (Doing 10 things at once) Able to type as fast as she thinks Remembers Birthdays etc. Doesn't over pack for trips Can Identify most rocks (she is a geologist by training) James
  11. We prefer propane because the boys are not temped to poor some of the fuel on the fire. james
  12. My impression haveing only read the first couple of pages is that It is a great resource. Perhaps we can use it to add to the JLT kit. Or to our arsonal of tools to help the boys. james
  13. Try http://clipart.usscouts.org/library/Baden-Powell_Portraits/index.html James
  14. Get 3 ASM's That way you will never have to cancel when one gets sick. Get all insurance and driver lic stuff from all of the parents. Use the merit badge councilers to teach 50-75 % of the classes Remember it is a game with a purpose Good luck jc
  15. I let my son know that when we are with the scouts he is just another boy, (one I expect alot out of). I think that I didn't hit the right mix with him. He wanted to be just another boy but with me there it was hard to do. He has enjoyed camping with the varsity more than he did with the scout patrols. I have another son about to join the scout patrol he is in the new scout patrol now. I hope that I can get the mix of dad vs scout leader better. I like bob's suggestion of 20 min. So my suggestion is dad's look for the signs and give your kid more slack than I did. JC
  16. The above site is the best I have found. Smaller catapults seem to be more accurate than the real big ones. jc
  17. In my opinion the GSS is well founded. Most of the baned activities have been the souce situation where a boy has been seriously injored or died. I feel that the GSS is my oportunity to learn from others mistakes. So good bad or ugly I will follow it. JC
  18. great thread Bob, If any of you have other stories where training saved you or lack of training caused problems please respond. I need all the ammo I can get to help my fellow volunteers know why. James
  19. sometimes you can fix a ziper on a tent. I the part that moves get bent out a little bit it will not force the teeth to engage all of the way. So squizing the outside pats of the moving part of the ziper may return a broken ziper to functioning. I have found that a Bit of carpet inside the tent near the door makes the floor last longer and a piece outside the door cuts the dirt by 800% James
  20. 1st be in uniform your self. Have other adults in uniform. I have found that my scouts were one less part of the uniform than the least dressed adult. Give candy for each part of a uniform that a scout is wearing. Everyone wears the shirt of thier favorite teem. you unit needs to be worthy of admoration before pride can motivate uniform wearing. Dont give up James
  21. laninated morse code cards. So even those of us who forget can signal. Printers loop (10X magnifing glass) Look at plans rock and bugs through it and gain a greater appreciation of God's handy work. Buddy Berners I haven't done this yet but I am planning on taking my digital camera out to our favorite camping spots and take pictures of all the different plans, then go to the local university and have someone identify them all, then put them in a booklet and give to each new scout. thus we will have a book of plants that we know we will see. Tine in a bucket. cut a hole in the center of the bucket lid and put the spool of twin in it. (a spool of twin cost between $10-15 and has over 100 feet in it) makes pioneering happen. give the historian film or a disposable camera and have him take pictures. with the rule that every picture has to have a scout in it and every scout needs to be in a picture. on trips with travel time of more than an hour bring a merit badge counceler along and work on the lecture part of the merit badge. Create traditions. james
  22. Here is my .02. The program works, I was able with the help of a district sponsored webelos woods and webelos day hike to make available every pin. I recommend assigning boys to teach each other. Pick one part and have the boy prepare to teach it. This worked especially well with first aid. I also found that having them make a video of how to do a skill was great fun. The hemlock maneuver will never be forgotten in our house 3rd treat webelos as optional if a scout doesnt want to be there and is disruptive send him home. It is amazing what you can do if you dont have to say johnny, johnny, JOHNNY 300 times in one meeting. 3 strikes and you must not want to be here. James
  23. $14 per boy, leaders free. No t-shirt 1 patch leaders have to pay for the patch if they want it James
