  1. I was once contacted and told that I had been scouted for Nigerian investment opportunity. Does that count? Juris, I have read all eight of your posts since you logged on last week. Collectively they aren't worth the bits of memory they occupy on the Scouter server. Individually they are just bad posts.
  2. My understanding is that the girl scouts pretty much did away with any real uniform. That the GS's have gone to a class 'B' style t-shirt for all occasions. Perhaps the uniform is only needed at (blank) and all other times the boys could wear matching T-shirts. What I like about the GS approach is that the t-shirts are better for crafts, outdoor activities and physical activities. But when would we wear the uniform, only at pack meetings and ceremonies? Can I expect my families to buy a uniform that will sledom be worn? And add a $10 tshirt to the uniform budget.
  3. Good advice but I must add that this is at the den level. Our pack is not particularly serious about wearing uniforms. But I would like my den to be. So keep the sugustions coming.
  4. You show up in uniform and your kid shows up in uniform, but the others are in varying degrees of scout clothes. What can be done to improve uniform wearing? (This message has been edited by Its Me)
  5. I would say that most cubs are joining scouting because they want to go camping. Now the family that has something going on for all four of our campouts, misses the day trips too and only shows up for one indoor den meeeting a month, soon discovers that junior has lost interest in scouting. Gee I wonder why? Maybe because he wasn't really doing too much scouting stuff. It slieghs me when a parent goes out and buys all the equipment, then has one sleepless night on a cheap air matress then never wants to camp again. How difficult can it be to to spend a night out in a tent e
  6. Our pack has three campouts a year. One is council cub world all activities are programed by coucnil on council property. Another is a district dad/lad mom/me on council property The third campout is just for our pack and its held at an approved county park. Same place every year (although as the BALOO I would like to mix it up a little) The council has pre-approved ~14 area campsites, mainly county and state parks for cub camping.
  7. SemperParatus, summed up the difference quite well. I don't think they will merge; there are too many differences in chartering and organizational philosophy. I do think co-ed scouting is near, ~20 years or so.
  8. With a son of my own and a den of 8 boys, I am always prepared for foolishness. Cooking?
  9. I am just thinking out loud. Could a photogragher be hired/arranged to take pack photos, den photos and individual photos similar to soccer. Maybe a parent could do it with some prep. This would be a great keepsake and could be used to encourage uniform wearing. Any experience with a photo night?
  10. No. I simply reported to our CC which boys had completed their Conservation Patch and she had them ready at the next pack meeting.
  11. I will soon be having an adult leaders meeting to plan for the up coming Webelos program. So I would like to have an idea on what my intentions are towards a den chief before then. I plan to inform the parents that the boys will pick a patrol name and elect a patrol leader to serve a two month reign. That the boys will begin to feel some of the weight of being a boy lead unit. I have not requested a den chief nor is there an available sibling waiting in the wings. My question is in regards to your experience with a Boy Scout Den Chief at the Webelos I level. Will he aid in developing t
  12. Eddie Bauer is not a brand name perse. It's an outdoor image factory for mallies and retailers. That may be a bit harsh but outside of Sears and Target I really don't see Eddie Bauer tents. To really upgrade your tent you need to upgrade your supplier. I would suggest looking at tents available from www.rei.com and www.campmor.com. I own a four man Eureka with fiberglass poles and a five man Kelty with aluminum poles. They are bothe well made. Both companies have brandlines have design tents to cost whatever I am willing to pay.
  13. What if they make that silly rule and the unit still decides to skip the camporee? Would that satisfy him? Probably because he sounds like a vindictive person. Scouting, as is life, is about choices. If a unit requests the use of a site and the resources needed are available, they should be allowed to go.
  14. Are you hoping that the parents and Scout don't show up this weekend? I think you should tell the parents before this weekend. You could have asked How should I approach these parents and how do you think they will react? Its likely that this child has problems all over the spectrum and his parents could be thinking, "why doesn't he just cut us." The family knows better than you, I would expect, what they are faced with: They are faced with the dad not being fit to do the hike, maybe to the point of injury The kid will have to abandon the hike and wait or worse be flown ho
  15. I am not over weight. I usually work out 5 times a week and do a few triathlons and some running races every year. I would want a leader to be in good shape and I would not turn down a volunteer but would steer them as you have self segregated into tasks more agreeable to their level of fitness.
  16. I gave a copy of the DVD to my son for his 9th birthday. I hadn't seen it prior to buying it. When it arrived I looked at the picture and thought oh-boy this won't hold his intertest. I was wrong he loved it. He has wathced it several times and when a boy, especiall a scout stays for a sleep over, he puts it in. He loves the part about the tank.
  17. The ultra light guys really like these and swear by them. I have built one of these and it works fine. I have never used it for packing packing relying instead on my cannister stoves. I have not seen one using perlite before.
  18. I will suggest to look at relationships. Maybe on the outside he apears to enjoy the company of others in his patrol but on the inside he doesn't care for them. Maybe consider a different patrol.
  19. Lynncc's, experience was similar to mine. In SR-676, (the spirit of 76) a patrol apparently forgot their patrol flag outside and another patrol found it. The Patrol that lost it came up and asked for it back. It was not returned. A few hours latter the patrol without the flag came up and made a sincere apology to the troop and promised to be more cautious with items of significance. It was then produced from behind a curtain. The SPL asked the patrol that found it if they accepted the other patrols apology and indeed they did. The end. I can't imagine the incident you describ
  20. I live in Florida and my kids and I use 15F mummy's. In the late fall, early spring when we do most of our camping the bags are fine. Varying the zipper does wonders to regulate the temperature. I have a very light 40F bag that I have used on May campouts. It still got too hot. When it takes untill 4:30 Am for the temperature to drop below 70F there just won't be enough relief. And I agree with the other poster, too warm is just a fact of sleeping on top of what ever bag you brought. Too cold and its misserable on the cold muscles.
  21. Sometimes the other parents act as if they are a vacation when the den leader plans, organizes and does the meal plan/shoppoing for a campout. Divide up the responsibilities. Have each family be responsible for a meal. Give someone the responsibility to plan and run a morning activity and another to do a afternoon activity. Put an adult incharge of the fire. Delegate, delegate, delegate
  22. In my humble opinion, I think being a Webelos den leaders is the perfect time period for taking Woodbadge. The timing is right, as you can prepare the cubs for the transition from adult led to boy led activities. Also when shoping troops with your cubs you can look with a more critical eye the troops that meeting the program goals of scouting.
  23. I agree with wingnut. Your troop has reach its functional capacity. You are right on with the priotity for outings: scouts, leaders and then parents. Maybe you are at an equilibrium. Five souts leave, five scouts can then join.
