  1. I believe you are referring to the WoodBadge course, our council charges $175 if I recall correctly... If you are referring to a different course please specify and I will try and help... InsaneScouter http://insanescouter.com Webmaster webmaster@insanescouter.org
  2. What pack is best for a growing Scout... Shouldn't this be the Scouts decision since he will be the one carrying it? We can analyze something all we want but what it comes down to is what is right for one Scout won't be right for another. Let me give you a real example. When I was just getting into Backpacking maybe 12 or 13 years old my parents got me a very nice external frame backpack - it was awesome... then I went on my first backpacking trip and almost never went again... the pack just did not fit my body correctly... the trip was miserable, parts of the trip I was even in tears. I never used that pack again ... my dad then rented a few different packs for me and I tried each finally deciding on the internal frame. My parents then bought me this pack for another birthday or Christmas or something and I am still using it. Yes the pack was fitted to me in the store, but a loaded pack for 5 miles is different from a empty pack for 90 seconds. I often make the recommendation to new Scouts try several packs, barrow, rent, whatever be make sure you are comfortable with it. I don't care if its an internal or external as long as it works for you. Usually once a year or so the Scouts are taught by the older Scouts the differences, befits, care, etc of the backpacking gear. 3. As Sheila mentioned the Webelos may wear the Tan uniform but only if they are wearing the blue loops. When the cross over to Boy Scouts they go to the red loops. What I did as a Webelos leader many years ago was made it optional for Webelos 1 to wear the blur or tan .. so yes I had a mix that was as they out grew the Blue they went to Tan. When they become Webelos 2 they had to wear the Tan uniform and use the Boy Scout Sign, salute, etc. This is just how I ran my den and what the parents of the Scouts wanted. I hope this helps. 8. I would suggest several things... but for the most part it sounds like you are doing all the right things... 1. 1st and foremost usually the best thing to do is keep them as involved as possible. 2. Get the individual to go through training 3. Make sure the individual understands that Scouting has been adventurous for almost a 100 years and that you as leaders (I hope) have been through training and thus know how to keep activities that could be dangerous safe 4. Listen to what the individual has to say and have that same individual suggest do-able fixes 5. Don't give up - remember we are there for the boys not the BS... have faith and it all will work out I don't know how much this helps, as this is probably my weakest area. I may be way off the dot - take this as ideas from a fellow scouter. Good Luck. InsaneScouter http://insanescouter.com webmaster@insanescouter.org

  12. I guess i better clarify something... I am not saying I wont and dont follow the book... I have just found that the book doesnt always give the whole story justice. I am just looking for what others are doing right now in their postions - not quotes out of the book. I hope this makes more since.. if not let me know and I will try again... InsaneScouter
  13. Various members of the District committee have being trying to talk me into being a UC. I have seriously been considering it. I was wondering if other UC's and other commissioners could give me a run down on what they actually do - not what the book says. Thank You in advance. InsaneScouter AKA. 15. As a Boy Scout many years ago, I participated in a Toys 4 tots type program and what we did was get bikes donated, clean them up, fix-em, etc. It was lots of fun. InsaneScouter http://insanescouter.com
  16. My thought here is a bit weird... and may has already been tried.. or is to far is left field.. don't know but will throw it out any way... What are the boy being such a problem? Are they board? Are they being challenged mentally? A saying I leave by when working with scouts is "Control through activity". Why if you give a boy a few seconds you have a fight.. you have to keep thing going non-stop for the entire time of the meeting if you have to stop to figure out what to do next - bammm you have a problem. Has any one sat down with scouts, other then to get them to calm down and behave better, but actually talked to them to find out what is up, what they want to do, what they think should be done different, etc. I realize that these are young wolf scouts, but there answers might surprise you. Also you may have to use unique forms of punishment... such as putting a scout in time out... also on the same line of the candle I used a Mascot with a Webelos den a stuffed bald Eagle. The den, or should I say Eagle Patrol instantly grew attached to the Eagle and they know if I, any other leader, or Den Chief put that Eagle in my box it meant trouble. You may also what to try to find a way to provide greater leadership for that den. Such as extra Den Chiefs or maybe no Den Chiefs, also maybe more Assistant Den Leaders are needed. The correct solution for you may not be what worked for other members of this group. So be creative, don't give up. Remember that old Boys Town saying "There is no such thing as a bad boy." I hope this helps. If you would like to pick my brain in more detail post them here or email me. InsaneScouter http://insanescouter.com webmaster.insanescouter.org

  18. In my Troop uniform inspections are held usually once a month, and are set by the PLC and ran by the PLC. At random times we may perform special inspections where the Scoutmaster or some other adult does the inspection or maybe even the District Commissioner or other "higher up" who the Scouts don't know. The benefit of using someone the Scouts don't know is it is more impressive to them, and gives them a greater feeling that others do care. This is just my ramblings take them for what they are worth. 20. I personally perfer the Internal frame packs. I have had trouble in the past being unconfortable backpacking becuase the pack kept sliding down - do to my lack of hips. However as you noted internal frame packs can be more diffuclt to pack, usually have less pockets, are sometimes harder to find things in, and don't allow your back to breath - but I have found that my comfort on the trail is more important then these problems and the fact that it stays snug to my back has come in handy more then once. It is also important to note that although I love my internal pack and will necer go back to an external - internal frames are not for everyone. InsaneScouter http://insanescouter.com
  21. In our Troop we require the Scouts to use the Troop tents, becuase in the past we have had probloems such as tents being slashed at summer camp, or even scouts getting mad at other scouts so they do their business on the tent (yuck). Anyway these were only one-time problems and have been handled and solve, anything can happen - afterall kids will be kids. InsaneScouter http://insanescouter.com
  22. In my 8th edition Scout handbook the 1st Aid Skill Award cross is Red in my 9th edition handbook the 1st Aid Skill Award cross is green. Glancing at the requirments, the green cross one has more requirments which seem to relate to the current tenderfoot requirments. Hope this helps. 23. I am a Bobwhite. I just recently completed my ticket. I am still in process of actually setting up the ceremony to receive my beads. I can't wait to have them at last. InsaneScouter http://insanescouter.com Webmaster webmaster@insanescouter.org
  24. I really like your list, and totally agree with it. Sometimes we all need remembers. With the two Troops I currently work with, one running, one being re-started, I strive to guide the Scouts through the First Class Trail in about a year. Admittly some do it in less time and others need more time. My exeperience has been if the Scout is activiley partispating and enjoying what the Troop has to offer, especially the monthly campouts, they will earn First Class in about a year.
