  1. The test allows for shades of choice that can lead one to believe that he has included those "other moments" but in reality it is a forced choice. None of us are always one or the other. But, I suppose we have tendencys towards the poles that makes us look like one of the types. I started reading some of the definitions, famous people like me, and some of the careers. FB
  2. I was reading and found this interesting. Sometimes on rainy days I am an INFP and then on sunny days I could be an ESTP but then on grouchy days INTJ So with two Is and two Ns and two Ts and two Ps, I am an INTP-60 % of the time. I then took the test and came up with ENTP. FB(This message has been edited by Fuzzy Bear)(This message has been edited by Fuzzy Bear)
  3. How about a woman action figure, Angelina Joline? FB
  4. As a youth, I was too young to know any different. As a young adult, I had had grown to enjoy the program and wanted to continue. As an older adult, I didn't care to learn new tricks. and today, I am glad I didn't. What value for recruitment? Good program is essential. FB
  5. Rich, Your tour of the Chin-Be-Gota camp captured me. I would enjoy and volunteer (If I could) to walk beside you to take pictures and record your memories. There is something so tempting about a place like that. It seems almost alive. I stumbled on an old camp once and spent the afternoon taking pictures and feeling memories that I never had at that camp. It was on private property and I trespassed out of complete sympathetic curiosity mixed with a weird excitement. I couldn't help myself from doing it. To this day, I have deeply mixed feelings about what I saw and experienced. From what you wrote, I have an idea you may have had a similar experience, especially since you left most of your emotions out of the review. Your Dad was silent. I would encourage you to get an audio recorder, go to your Dad's soon and get his reactions to the existing camp and then his past experiences. Afterwards, ask him to take out any mementos and/or patches to recreate his memories. You appear to write and think, so you might want to write in Word your chronological memories of those months, weeks and years. Document your experiences with any paper items or camp patches the exact dates. Memory tends to take a vacation from dates, so don't let it confuse your recall. I am looking forward to your thread. 6. I vote against a high profile action man as Chief Scout. I would rather have a Dan Beard. But, I certainly hope the choice works for the UK. I am not sure my vote counts anywhere but this little space. FB
  7. ASM59's problems are well understood and have been shared by at least one other here that I personally know. When the symptoms of despotism are recognized and the tedium of censorship is endured, it is time to understand how the system works. Power is shared in the BSA on most all levels. There are votes to be counted and the people that have a vote can change the way things work. As a SM, I worked with a large committee. I wanted help. I asked for help and I got help. There were enough people to go around and to assist on every single project the Scouts requested and then some. It was not always that way. When I accepted the position, I also had a CC as the power broker. Once I requested help and once people took control of their votes, it didn't matter who was the CC. He soon left on good terms, although the smell of the incident still remains with me to this day. It was unfortunate because I still think we could have gotten along. FB
  8. I apologize for using political terms but in fact that is the point. Governance is the rule used all along the way. The Troop Committee, the PLC, the Scouts, the SM, all are involved in the process. It is important to know how it works or there will be disorganization resulting in authority reverting to the few or to the one. The PL's represent the Scouts in their patrol and do not represent their own personal interests. The PL's come to the PLC to present the issues that have been discussed and agreed on in the Patrol meeting. The issues move up and through the SM and through the Troop Committee to find resolution and support. The Committee is there to support the issues within their wealth/poverty of resources. It is a democracy and power is shared. I hope that is the process we share. FB
  9. I agree the agenda is key but it should be set based on input from the SM based on input from the ASM's, and input from the Pl's based on input from the Scouts. It is a method that supports the Scouts in their program. Power is centered on those governed and issues forth. Regressive parliamentary measures to thwart a policy by limiting debate may be successful in a few instances but continued use will constrain fair representation and lead to either repression or use of aggressive tactics from the minority. A time limit on each item is necessary but it is also important to have a fair hearing. The members must be aware that debate needs to be held to a minimum and each speaker should be coached to speak concisely to cover the main points. Dissent can curtail initiatives the same as time constraints, so work outside the meeting needs to be completed to understand and to include the oppositions view and/or to find common ground. As much as people like to believe in the one hour per week Scouting job, it simply is untrue. The system of governance is one of spirited cooperation and not one that is conducive to an adversarial stand by a few. It takes the whole group to support the program and to effectively assist the group in arriving in a timely manner to their goals. FB
  10. I just got to thinking about pirates and their gold earrings and their funeral's being paid for and such. 1. Since their death would most likely be at sea, then their earrings were probably small. 2. Pirates most likely were not finicky about purchasing caskets and burial plots for their brother pirates, so the earrings most likely paid for their wake. (*a good time was had by all!) 3. If a not so bright pirate just happened to wear a large earring in hopes that everyone would feel sympathy and give him a nice "Cristin" burial, most likely his matey would knock him in the noggin and make off to the nearest Grog shop for a evening of hearty laughter, spirited grog, and a wench. 4. Real pirates probably made believe that death would sidestep them and they would quietly retire in the Bahamas with a treasure chest of doubloons. Maybe if they did die, someone would take the last bit from the treasure, extract the small earring, and bury the poor guy in the chest. (*Aeee matey!, one eye winked and the other with eye patch) FB (This message has been edited by Fuzzy Bear)
  11. Do they still throw their old worn out boots over the entrance gate posts? FB
  12. So, some might not hire you due to wrongful placement and some would be stopped in their tracks due to wrongful thinking. Knowing that should alert you to something else about yourself. Know your abilities and interests. Know what you have that is important to offer. Speak well, and positively, gain the respect of the interviewer with your personality. Wear long pants and a long sleeved shirt, tie is cautiously optional. FB
  13. Ok, what was on Billy Jack's license plate on his motorcycle?
  14. I offer you my solution knowing it does not match your wish. Our Pack had a similar decision. We needed a cheap resolution to PWD awards. Another woodworker and I cut out small PWD car stands. Basically there is a base, a mid-post and a top. The base and the top were cut from 1 X 4's. The edges were quarter rounded with a router. The top was about two inches longer than the length of the car and the base was shorter than the top. The mid post was cut from 2 X 4's at an angle. The base was secured to the 2 X 4 with two wood screws and then lightly sanded, stained-varnished. The top was screwed to the angle of the 2 X 4 with one screw, lightly sanded and stain-varnished. The stand was then ready for a car. The back wheels of the car hang over the top edge of the top and can be displayed or taken off and enjoyed. For a small expense, you can purchase trophy strips that read, 1st place, Pack number, date, etc. that has a glue backing to be attached to the top part of the stand below the front of where the car would go. Total cost- wood was donated, cutting and finishing were donated. The trophy strips were donated. The boys can help to lightly sand and complete the bases and put on the tops. We made enough for three places in each division, including the adults. My trophy is my car on a base that I built myself but my car was too slow to win. I don't have a trophy strip, mainly good memories of a fun event and an enjoyable project with a few good friends and Scouts. FB
  15. If you remember Billy Jack's Jeep, what did his license plate say?
  16. Sparkie, I tried the same tactic one year as Cub Day Camp Director to get parents to volunteer for Staff. Nobody stepped forward. I got angry, mad, then, I finally simmered. Later, I tried a more rational approach and found my staff but not where I had been looking nor how I had been trying. My all new and improved approach was developed as a Scout selling some kind of product every year door to door. I developed a kind of joy for selling after taking my Dad's advice that 10% of the people that I would personally contact would buy whatever I had almost at any price. I won every contest we had in our Troop with that little bit of knowledge. Now then, what did I find out? 1. If I had a poor product and ran to one house and knocked on the door and gave my little speech and nothing happened, I just went to 9 more houses. I would make a sell. (By the way, I used to count the number of houses because I didn't believe my Dad. As the idea proved itself, I would increase my contacts. Sometimes I would go to at least 500 houses.) 2. If I had a good product, I didn't have to run so hard. It began to sell itself. 3. If I had a great product, people came to me. 4. If I had a great product at a great price, I had to take orders and make deliveries. That was in the good old days, I am sure they are over. But as a Scout leader serving in many different positions over the years, I have been privileged to have recruited many great staffs. (Thanks Dad, you were right for once!) Fuzzy Bear
  17. Hi! I'm Scout Bob from your local troop. This year it is popcorn and beer but only national brands. How many cases can I sign you up for? (Note: This was meant to be consumed in small doses with your breakfast to bring only a smile, belly laughs not included.)
  18. Let me see, the BSA program hinges on the yearly sale of popcorn? Maybe, maybe not, what about: Registration, The sell of the most expensive uniforms and patches, Selling of the largest supply of literature in the world with yearly updates, Boys' Life Magazine, Scouting Magazine (nobody says anything about the revenue from the sale of ads) Selling of equipment and other supplies, Summer Camp-registration, patches, hats, belts, patches, soda, food, tee-shirts Event registration, patches, hats, and tee shirts also they usually have all concession proceeds Jamborees with all of the many associated costs to Scouts and Scouters, the Camping, Canoeing, and Sea Base Camps that generate money from all of the above mentioned ways and then Friends of Scouting Campaign that is well entrenched in many communities, Income from the United Way Campaign, Income generated from people setting up their wills to give to Scouting upon their death These are but a few of the ways that money is made in the BSA. I don't begrudge the BSA making money but I do like an open and honest accounting of where the money is coming from and where it is going. Making me feel bad because I dont want to purchase expensive popcorn just seems out of balance with all of the other areas I spend money in Scouting. FB
  19. To stand alone and to ask, Is there a God?, is to be everyman from the time before written language. To say it out loud in a group or to write it in a public forum without threat is a modern concept, especially when the answer is different. To debate it publicly and to divine the width and depth of the question is something unheard of but was done here, in some fashion. The question of True Religion is exactly that kind search. It is not an easy question to find answers for and I would challenge anybody to begin reading the tremendous number of volumes of literature on the subject without the kind of pain and problems that we found and although 20 some pages in length was only a surface scratch. We tend to guard our answers or to minimize the outside interference by closing our doors to other answers as a daily routine. But, when someone does knock on our door with another answer, it is a matter of character as to how we treat that individual. So, we must understand that, Our answer and how we answer defines who we are. By sorting through the garbage and the wisdom, I have found some nuggets of pure gold. I am appreciative of the time spent here by everyone. FB
