Same reference: Select the Indian name and its English equivalent for the candidate...from the Lenni Lenape language. Me: Although the name is honorary, it is symbolic in nature, it is functional, and it belongs to that person as a suitable representation of the distinguished work accomplished. It is not a matter of "getting" another award. It has more to do with who you are. When the VH committee struggles to find a name, then it is reasonable to assume that the person has little to reference. That is a principle that should be known by all. FB

A defense of the Commissioner's Corps: The latest figures on the average weight of a Scout Commissioner was reported to be at or under 250 pounds. They were only able to find four subjects for the study. One of them had been inactive for the last two years. One had not been assigned any units and the other two were ADC's that had not started recruiting. Some scientists thought that this study was skewed but later findings confirmed the accuracy of the initial findings. It was determined that weight had little to do with the efficacy of the person and their job. Several rounds of cake and coffee were had by all. So, don't start here! FB

If it is protection you want, then open communication is a good start. That even goes for the daughter that may be sleeping in somebody's tent. How did she get here anyway? FB

OAHB, 89/89, pages 120-123. Once per year, the Lodge Chief appoints a VH nominating committee (*about 5 to 10) composed of youth (*who can be VH) who are approved by the Lodge Advisor and Scout Executive. Then an adult Advisor Consultant is selected by the Lodge Chief and the Staff Advisor. Open discussion is the preferred method to make the selection. The approval is based on general consensus. If a vote is taken, only VH committee members age 21 and under are eligible. The selection is then sent to the National Committee for approval. 1. The selection is made from a list of Brotherhood members who are actively registered with the lodge and the BSA and HAVE BEEN BROTHERHOOD FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS. 2. A person is nominated according to the Quota system. It is 1:50 based upon total lodge membership. 3. The selection is based on distinguished service relative to age. 4. 50% of the nominations should be for candidates younger than age 21. 5. Professional Scouters do not count against the quota for total nominations but is counted for the total number of adults selected. These adults must meet the 2 years service as a Brotherhood member requirement. ...the National office then reviews the petitions for VH. That is the procedure, hopefully everyone followed it. FOG, Haze-fog not FOG, just for a laugh. You are right haze does describe those sports that are played competitively. It describes the all- out play that intends to hurt a team or an individual anyway that they can simply to win. It is play that takes the rules to the edge of fair play and remains during the entire time allotted. Underneath the thin surface of gaming, it has none of the elements found in a game. Therefore, it is not really a game but something designed to inflict hurt or injury to reduce the competition to a level that the objective of winning can be obtained. Winning by any means is closer to a war than a game in intent or motive. FB

What a big bunch of galoots. Everybody here deserves a hug. I am not sure how the BSA dispenses such things but I am sure there is a policy. Once it is expounded upon, just line up. FB

I believe that nicknames are a symbolic gesture to express the worth or the depth of a person. The Indians used names to give reference to sum up who the person really is. The American culture, as I know it, tries to distance itself from others by not using nicknames either out of respect or lack of familiarity. If we were closer knit, a large family, a tight neighborhood or a small town, then we would be named by others for our deeds or lack of them. To use a nickname means that there is support as part of the relationship. The abuse comes from using the nickname without the bond of friendship. FB

I don't want to move the old camfire ring. I am not worried about those that left. I am just complaining about the stew that boiled over and made a mess. I don't mind the mess because it is part of cooking. I just want there to be another meal. FB

As a Scout, my SM wore his OA sash and went to the Summer Camp OA ceremony. I was intrigued. I began to ask him questions about the OA. He later helped us start an Indian dance group. We made costumes and danced during one COH. As I got older, there were a few interested adults in the OA. I was not sure what the OA was or what we were doing. Some of the adults talked to me. I appreciated it even though I didn't understand how important it was. They made me feel comfortable and involved. As I got older and learned to drive, the adults were not as important for transportation. But something else happened, I wanted to expand my interest in Indian dancing and didn't know how. Some interested adults stepped forward. They arranged a meeting place, began to help with resources, drums, costumes, and later teepees. They were always in the background and always helping. I will forever be grateful to them for their time and efforts. The adults didn't run our program but they were essential in every aspect right down to just wearing the OA sash like my SM did during that first Summer Camp. FB

So now the Forum has censorship to delete, the squelch button to ignore, and we have the right to look the other way when somebody offends. Shouldn't all of those controls make this a nearly perfect site? Out of the hundreds that pass this way, only about 20 take the time to post. Recently, there has been an abrupt change in the postings and even fewer engage. I think the management will need to install some other buttons to bring about whatever it is that people are wanting. I am not sure what that is. Maybe it is to be left alone to think without being disturbed. Now, that would be a button worth installing on a Website. That should make the news. It would read: Scouter forum has installed a button so that people could be left alone. A Scout is friendly wasn't worth the time and effort, nor was the Freedom of Speech. People first wanted to throw those out that disagreed with them. Then they didn't want to hear anything that would offend there personal values. They squelched some and then censored others. Even after all of that the few that stayed still didn't like it and wanted more controls. It continued on until nobody would or could say a word. They were all left alone with their personal thoughts. We think now they are finally happy but we will never know. FB -
I can only tie this knot when in front of a crowd, what is it? (*answer below) When moving, I tie a loop knot and back pull the line through to secure the merchandise. Upon arrival, the end of the cord is pulled and the line loosened. The first knot is then easily removed. I call it a moving knot. (terrible explanation but great knot) Nobody has mentioned the fish knot, when a line is broken, you take the first line and tie an overhand knot onto the second line and then use the end of the second line to tie an overhand knot onto the first line. Then you simply pull the two knots together and it secures the fishing line that was broken! Try it, it will be the easiest knot you will ever learn and is useful. (*answer- my stomach) I should get a Scoutbook from BL for that one. FB

There is a line, very narrow in width and most can't stay on the safe or sane side. Suzzie could be a fun game if used wisely and it could lead to a great camp tradition but most likely it will be used to humiliate and use somebody for a laugh. My first Summer camp experience made me the butt of a joke that I was trying to pull on somebody else. I was embarrassed and I deserved it but none of it should have happened. After going to Philmont a few years later, I learned what a camp can be like and what traditions are about. As an adult leader, I tried to make camp meaningful and fun. As a Camp Director, I enjoyed a great staff that brought an amazing program to several groups of Scouts. There just isn't time or space in the camp experience to lend pain to another human being. FB

My Mother used to have these judgments about right and wrong. I used to kid her about hiding the Book of Answers. I told her I wanted a look at it sometime. She would laugh and say it was right because she said so. These days, I try to supply the reasons as well as the judgments. I wonder what my boys will add to the Book in the future. FB

There is one memorable scene in the Muppet Movie where Kermie is sitting alone out in the desert. He is talking to himself out loud while the others are sitting and talking around the campfire. It goes something like this, I am not sure about all of the people that came here or why. I am not so sure even what they are, just look at Gonzo. He continues on providing himself with reassurances about his trip. (It was scripted, as we found out in the next scene) Well, anyway what are we doing here in this forum and what brought us together? As of late, it has been kind of quiet, kind of like Kermie in the desert scene. just thinking out loud, FB

I studied gambling and then gambled. I have been carefully lucky and won on most occasions. It is one great feeling and highly enjoyable. There is absolutely nothing like it. On the other hand, I would rather dig a ditch for the same amount of money. Since I have dug ditches for a living as a youth, I know that it does not compare in feelings of joy. Study the odds. You will never have that 51% in your favor. All you have is your little pot of money and time. All three things work against you. If a person wants to make money, then work for it. Work honestly, pay the government their share and stash the cash in the bank drawer. You will get your 83% with that 6% or 9% interest. You will not be drawn and quartered emotionally and financially by the one armed bandit or the game of choice. 'He desperately longed to see and hear the beautiful Sirens along the coast. He told his men to pour hot wax in their ears so they would not hear him scream orders to untie him and so they would not be seduced by their song. They tied him to the mast and on they sailed into the nightmare ahead.' So if I have a choice, sail the long way around. FB
