  1. "I believe that you can have non registered adults participate on boards of review. These people are considered to be representatives of the community" That was the case long time ago, now the Advancement P&P book specifically states that boards for Tenderfoot through Life are made up of members of the Troop Committee. For Eagle, you may have people on the Board who are not registered.

  3. "A President who lets 10 soldiers die and does not care is arguably preferable over a President who lets 1000 soldiers die and breaks down in tears over it." Really, what if the President who let the 10 soldiers die should have sent more soldiers and better support so civilians wouldn't get killed?
  4. Bobalou said, "Neil up talks about a scout being an active member. But There is no requirement for advancement that calls for the scout to be an active member." Let's see . . . let's actually look in the holy Handbook of Irvin. Requirements . . . advancement . . . oh, yeah here it is . . .page 444, "Star Scout Requirements. . . 1. Be active in your> troop and patrol for at least 4 months as a First Class Scout." Sound like active membership to me. Maybe "membership" isn't stated but "your troop and patrol" carries with it the implication of membership otherwise it would say, "
  5. Quite often the low quality and high price of BSA uniforms are defended by proclaiming that they are "made in America by union workers." Keep jobs in America, that is a good goal and one that we should strive for whenever possible. You betcha! Imagine my surprise when I looked at my genuine official Boy Scout "vittle kit" (knife, fork and spoon) and saw that not only are they marked with the BSA seal but they also proudly proclaim "Made in China." I guess that the crappy uniforms must be American made but everything else may be made elsewhere. BTW, did you know that our gr
  6. "They require a BSA uniform. You require a purple shirt and plaid pants. " You are thick, aren't you? I don't require anything, that's not in my power. BSA is the one that said that a uniform isn't required.
  7. "It would be one thing for the guy to not know what the law is; it's another thing for the prosecutor not to know what the law is," It seems that the prosecutor does know what the law is.
  8. "If the CO wants to require a full uniform they can. Many do, many do not." How can a CO require a uniform when BSA has said that a uniform is not required? That sounds like adding to the requirements to me.
  9. "The president of IBM can be removed, you say he is not in charge?" Ulitmately, he isn't. The President answers to the Board and the Board answers to the stockholders. The SM is in charge of a limited aspect of the troop. The committee is in charge of another part. The SPL is in charge of yet another part. All have to answer to the owner of the troop.
  10. How can uniforms be mandatory for Wood Badge when they aren't mandatory for participation in Scouting?
  11. We often hear that the minimum number of adults to have a troop is four. The SM, CC, and two MCs. Thinking about advancement made me realize that this could put you into a situation where Scouts might not be able to advance. If there are exactly three members of the committee, what happens when the son of one of the committee members needs a BOR? Maybe this is a good example of why the troop committee should be recruited from outside the parents of the Scouts.
  12. Ah, Bob White, doing the classic oversimplification bit again. 11 year olds are completely different animals than 15 year olds, that's why 15 year old can effectively lead other 15 year olds.
  13. I don't see how being a Jr. Fireman applies here. Maybe it does for the "Scout Spirit" part but not the "active" part. The requirement says, "Be active in your troop." If you're off being a fireman then you aren't being active in your troop. Why is this so difficult to understand? I'll tell you why? Because we are afraid to say "No" to kids because they might quit. Baseball coaches, drama coaches, debate coaches, and band directors don't have any problems saying "No, if you don't come, you don't get the rewards." Heck, they say, "if you can't give me 110%, you can't even participa
  14. " Id be willing to vote for a Republican like John McCain " That would be a big mistake. As I've said before, I've been told by both Senators and staffers that McCain is a small minded and vindictive person. Evidently, if you oppose McCain on any issue, you have become his enemy and will set out to damage or destroy you. He really would have made an interesting Prez.
  15. "And for those of you who believe that the scout uniform is of poor quality, I would like to see what you are comparing their quality to, these uniforms are made in the USA and are of great quality. If you don't like the uniform you buy read the fine print, your satisfaction is guranteed by the national scout supply division." However, if we take our pants back because they fit like . . . well, like cheap pants, they can only be replaced by pants that fit the same way. As for what is being compared to BSA uniforms, let's look at simple work pants, how about Navy dungarees and Army BD
  16. Alpha Centauri said, "As far as male Girl Scout volunteers, I think that part of the resistance is that girls simply behave differently in female-only groups, and part of the idea of Girl Scouts is to encourage those behaviors." Interesting, when a similar argument is made on the Boy Scout side, we're called barbarians and out of step with the times. Korea Scouter, don't you find the GSUSA's policies to be the same as "profiling" and assuming that a black man in a sports car is likely to be a drug dealer and that a man in a turban on an airplane is a threat?
  17. "Is part of evaluation of Scout professional job based on the growth in membership?" From what I've read here, yes. It's grow or die.
  18. "I think myself lucky that I don't have to make the decision what is and what isn't "Avowed". I would however think that anyone wearing this patch with full knowledge of what it stands for would make my deciding real easy." Howszat? Unless I missed something, wearing the patch doesn't mean that you are light in your loafers, you're just showing that you support those that are.
  19. "And it's obvious that FOG's insult about atheists drew no response," I don't recall insulting atheists.
  20. "Meanwhile, FOG implies that all atheists are liars" When you walk around proclaiming untruths, what else could you be?
  21. Eamonn, atheists hate anything to do with religion even more than Arabs hate Jews. Why? Because they are desperately trying to convince themselves that they are right. They work as hard as they can to not believe in a supremem being when the evidence that there is a supreme being is all around them. They are much like the flat Earth folks, working very hard not to believe the evidence so they can cling to their erroneous beliefs.
  22. "Since you won't bother to actually FIND a government-funded program " Unlike you, I have better things to do with my time. I have a wife (a real wife, not a man in a dress like yours) and a couple kids that take up my time. If I didn't have anything better to do, I'd spend my days in the library looking through the paper for the news stories that I've read in the past.
  23. "If a boy is only less than 50% of the time, would the scouts even consider him for PL or SPL? I would think not. Would your SPL make him Scribe if he's seldom at a troop meeting. Again, I would hope not." In an ideal world, you'd be right. However, all too often the PL is "elected" because no one else wants the job and he needs it to advance. The same is true of other positions, "Who wants to be Scribe? Okay, you're the Scribe." Bob White said, "The ability to be active comes from a variety of personal characteristics. . . .Talk with the scout and come to an agreement of the level
  24. "Get rid of the 50 percent requirement, you will find no supporting BSA literature that says a troop may do this." On the other hand, there is nothing to say that a unit cannot come up with their own definition of active. I guess that an important consideration is that there is not "activity" requirement until Star so you really can't require a certain level of activity for T_foot or 2nd Class.
  25. If I had the time and reseources that liberals have, I'd do some research but since I'm a conservative and I'm responsible for saving the free world, I won't. That said, why is it that no one complains when the government funds programs for "at risk" black youths?
