  1. Merlyn_LeRoy, Please explain your comment "And I will continue to call the BSA dishonest for their actions." I don't understand your position. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1

    Pack vs Pack

Thanks for all the suggestion, folks. The Cubmaster of Pack 1 hsa "thrown in the towel" & I have informed my DC of the problem. He is in the process of trying to work something out. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
  3. I have 3 ASM's & only one has specific duties. He is the Advancement Chairman. He does other things as well. I alwas thought the ASM was to do what the title states, assist the Scoutmaster! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
  4. My Troop usually has 2-3 fundraisers a year. We sell popcorn, hoagies & pizzas and will hold car washes in the spring. Normally, we try to gear the hoagie & pizza sale around an event like the Super Bowl to help boost sales. My Scouts do a good job. Most earn their way to summer camp. If a Scout transfers to another Troop, his portion of the fundraisers can go with him if he asks for it. We will make a check payable to the Troop he is transfering to & deliver it (if it is local, registered mail if not) to his new Troop treasurer. The key is the Scout - not mom or dad - m
  5. I was born & raised Catholic and now am a Presbyterian. Same with my wife. The thing I never liked about the Catholic faith was they prayed to statues & for the dead. Prayer can do neither any good. I was a Presbyterian before I became a Christian. I for one am glad I switched for the Catholic faith. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
  6. You might want to check with the district commissioner in your area & find out if there are any adults in other Troops that are unhappy. They might be willing to sign on with you. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
  7. Good time! Great place to meet & greet!
  8. eisely, Click on the link in OGE's post. I had a great time last night! FYI ... my ID on Yahoo! is troop1_pgh. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
  9. Its Trail Day & OGE, Thanks for the efforts! My daughter has a b-ball game tonight so I woun't be there until late. How long do you plan on chatting? Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
  10. Yes we are very proud! Thanks. I wasn't telling that story to brag. My point was anything can be overcome if the correct attention is given. Sometimes it is tough to know when to back off & when to step in. And sometimes just standing back to see what happens. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
  11. OGE, Troop 1 has been chartered by the Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church since 1912. Since I have been involved with the Troop, we have had 3 senior pastors. We have had a good working relationship with the church. My district is holding it's district dinner in the social hall for the 2nd year in a row. We are blessed to have such a good chartering organization. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
  12. sctmom, WOW! As a Scoutmaster, I make a special effort to interact with visiting Webelos & their parents. My Troop always puts on a special meeting when the Webelos visit. They make rope, set up tents, etc. I spend hlf the meeting with the Webelos & half with the parents. Then I spend the other half unwinding from the 1st two halves! It sounds like your talents might be better served as a leader in a Troop. You could be the ASM in charge of Webelo Transition! Good luck! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
  13. I can relate. My son is deaf. He joined Cubs with my wife as his Den Mother. He really enjoyed Scouts. He crossed over to Boy Scouts when he turned 11 & earned his Eagle! He finished his 1st quarter of college at RIT on the dean's list! My wife & I have been very involved in his Scouting career, but we made no special exceptions for him. He was expected to do what all the other Scouts were doing. He did & did it very well. He was elected SPL three times! It sounds like thie boy comes with alot of baggage you might never know about. This can be tough to deal with.
  14. It's sad when these things happen. Does the SPL need the position for rank? I wish I had 6 ASM's! I think the best thing the ASM's can do is set a meeting with the SM & find out what is going on. Having your CC their would be a good idea. Do this in a neutral location & make sure the SPL or any other family members are not present. The issue is between the adult leadership of the Troop. This way, you might find out what's going on. Good luck! Ed Mori Scoutmaster (wishing I had 6 ASM's) Troop 1
  15. I'll try to make it. I have a meeting tonight with the Rev of the church where my Troop meets to discuss Scout Sunday. That plus my daughter chatting with her friends makes it tough. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
  16. Run by or allowed to meet in the school - same thing. In most public schools, both must be approved by some form of school administration. If the approval is given, then the school is responsible for the group. By allowing a group to meet in a school building doesn't mean they endorse the group's beliefs. By chartering a Scout Pack/Troop doesn't mean they endorse their beliefs! Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
  17. No such thing as a stupid question! No such thing as a stupid answer! If a question is not intelligent then it deserves a not intelligent answer!
  18. "When you have a school running a "no atheists" youth group, that violates the establishment clause." What about public schools who have bible study groups along side of gay rights groups & Wiccans? Wiccans, atheists, Jews, Christians, crystal worshipers, etc. - I have no problem with them meeting at my daughters school - as long as my daughter has the freedom of choice to join which group she wants as long as she meets their membership requirements. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
  19. "Nowhere in the entire constitution do you see "separation of church & state." " Just like "freedom of religion", the concept is there, but not the exact phrase. I don't see the concept anywhere. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. By not letting a religios group, regardless of the religion, meet in a public school is prohibiting the free exercise thereof. Letting a group use a facility isn't endorsing the group. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
  20. Whya are we removing God from everything? What's the big deal? I personally feel attempt to remove God from our everyday lives is one of the reasons this country was going to he** in a hand basket. since 911, people have returned to their faith or have gone seeking one. This is a good thing. If the boy doesn't want to say the oath the way it is then I say don't let him in! Has anyone noticed that Congress starts every session with a prayer? Ed Mori Scoutmaster (who will be celebrating Scout Sunday this month) Troop 1
  21. Merlyn_LeRoy, You will notice the 1st ammendment also has "freedom of religion" in it. Nowhere in the entire constitution do you see "separation of church & state." What you do see is the state is not allowed to demand a religious belief nor are they allowed to hinder a religious belief. Ed Mori Scoutmaster Troop 1
