  1. Some Scouts hate the whole process and thinks he is too rigid. But in the end we have never had an application or project write-up returned or questioned. Never had one returned ever? And this benefit's the Scouts how?
  2. A Board really asked this? "Who will take care of your project if you end up in an accident and are in the hospital for three months?" Yeah this is really morbid! I would have answered "No one. The project will be there when I get out of the hospital."
  3. You let this go by and the kid thinks filling in the college app is the same way. Wanna bet mom and dad are very involved in filling out the college app so the likelihood of major typos and grammatical errors won't happen.
  4. Maybe dad needs to stay home and see what happens. I'm not as psychologist either but I wonder what would happen if the next time this Scout has one of his tantrums, everyone ignored him and went about their business as if nothing happened? I'll defer to the real psychologists on this one.
  5. He informed the scouts to "keep it a secret." Isn't this a violation? I've been trained through three or more different youth protection programs and they mention the secrecy as a red flag. No it isn't a violation. Keep what a secret?
  6. Ed, what you are describing is a raffle, not a real auction. Anything that includes people buying tickets for a chance to win something is a raffle, and against BSA policy. Auction, raffle, Call it what you want. It is known as a Silent Auction and Chinese Auction.
  7. He is quite strict with them that they should type their project on a computer There is no requirement this be typed.
  8. I'm not sure there is a problem with the contact with the Scouts. It sounds like this was visible to all. What seems to be suspect is what was said.
  9. My 1st year as a Cubmaster we had a Chinese Auction at our B&G and our DE and a couple other district folks were there. They told me afterward that type of fundraiser wasn't allowed but they wouldn't say anything. We never did that again!
  10. Well, there are many different types of silent auctions. There are the kind where you buy tickets and put them into a jar for the item you are interested in. So you ARE paying for a chance to win. VERBOTEN! Good enough for you Al.
  11. Well, Al, just because it's in Scouting Magazine doesn't mean it's condoned by National.
  12. silent auctions are fine -- really! You tape a bid sheet next to each item and pray. Raffles and other games of chance where you pay an up front fee are not so fine Silent Auctions are a form of gambling therefore forbidden.
  13. The first thing that comes to my mind is. What is he or his wife going to think about such errors when he pulls it out of a file in 20 or more years and they read it over? Will he be as proud to be an eagle with these errors on his original paperwork? Do you think he will wonder why he was allowed through with errors like this? Will his wife still be as impressed with his boyhood accomplishment? These are just a few thoughts. Obviously these are not simple errors or you would not be asking this question. Seriously?
  14. I'd tell him what I found & it's up to him to change it. I don't think his application should be turned away because of grammatical and/or spelling errors.
  15. At Station Square? Yup. There are a bunch of good place to eat there. Just Ducky Tours runs outta there. Take the incline up to Mt Washington and enjoy the view or dine in one of the fine establishments! Take a ride on the Gateway Clipper!
  16. Tradition should never be more important than why we are in church in the 1st place.
  17. Interesting take DeaconLance. I disagree. The Flag Code which is a law should be followed the way were are commanded to follow the laws of the land.
  18. Assault and OUI What is OUI? In this case it appears the requirement worked. I'm surprised the CO signed the app knowing about these charges.
  19. It ain't Pittsburg anymore and ain't been for a lotta decades!
  20. 1. My patrol's choice and stayed on a table in our campsite. 2. Only used one on our hike. None were required. 3. Only at the closing dinner. 4. For what? We took up a collection at a chapel service but nothing more. 5. Yep but a lot cheaper and in a really neat venue!
  21. The amusing part is assuming atheists care about Scouting!
