Stosh, It's the culture clash of cubs and scouts. Just remember that, just like the boys, the adults need instruction too, moreso than the boys. Better plan would have been to have a scout table and across the room, the adult table with you there explaining the whole boy led thing. It sounds like you need to get more out in front of the adults. I'm sure the scout's parents would have been more than happy to help him with his rope making.

KDD had it right. He doesn't have to join....just invite him to come to pack and den meetings. He joins down the road, credit for time served, and move on down the scouting path.

You wouldn't cut down any live trees for the Merit Badge requirement. Use what has already fallen, then distribute back what you've taken for your shelters. Tell them for the badge this is what we are doing, to respect the LNT principles. Explain to them that in real survival situations, You have to do what you need to survive.

I was looking(hoping) for more advanced Scoutcraft. Did not expect the classroom work or the leadership seminar or the patrol project or the ticket. My bad for not researching hard enough I guess. My experience wasn't bad, just not what I expected at all. I guess that colors my recollection, that and the fact I didn't get my beads the way I wanted to. I'm not sure I'd spend the money and go if I knew up front what was coming.
