  1. Yes, I have. I sent him home. Why keep him at camp if he is not enjoying it?
  2. I'm a Health teacher. I teach the nutrition class. I can see the increasing rates of obesity, diabetes, etc. amongst my students. It is truly alarming. A single solution that meets the needs of everyone is never easy. In fact, it is impossible. I wish the bureaucrats in Washington (and Irving) could understand that. My point is that we all, at times, fail to meet the needs of the kids because we must follow idiotic rules and regulations set by uncaring, self-promoting bureaucrats who seem to know very little about how to run a good program.
  3. I understand that. The problem is that about half of this food ends up in the trash can. They don't eat it.
  4. I would imagine that he can content himself knowing that he is the kind of clergyman who follows the directives of his superiors. I can relate to that. As a teacher and scout leader, I have often had to follow rules and directives that I personally felt were less than helpful to my students and scouts. I think we all have. Take, for example, the federally subsidized school lunch program. I understand the good intentions of the program, but it upsets me to tell a hungry child that he/she can't have any more food because a bureaucrat in Washington has decided that every child needs to be on
  5. Does this mean that if the scout is affiliated with an organized religion, then the parent cannot write the letter? I know some people who are members of an organized religion who would not feel comfortable asking their clergy to write the letter. I also know a clergy member who always refuses to write anybody a letter of recommendation. He says that it is a new policy from his superiors. They don't want to be put in the difficult position of having to explain someday why one of their clergy members wrote a glowing testimonial for someone who was later accused of sexual misconduct.
  6. Even when treated correctly, a wound can still become infected. The Scoutmaster should always be notified about accidents and wounds incurred on a scouting activity. Boys will not always do this. They don't want to get in trouble for messing around or behaving in an unsafe manner. Back in the day, when I was a Scoutmaster, it would have been nearly impossible for a boy to keep an injury like this a secret. We would have spotted it when the boy was in the showers. With YP guidelines (and the emphasis on protecting a boy's privacy), it is entirely possible that a boy could hide an inj
  7. Welcome to the forum. Yes, you should state how he fulfills his duty to God. My concern here is that he was very active in his church back when you were very active. He stopped being active in his church when you stopped being active. In the letter, you should avoid using the words "we" and "our" when discussing his duty to God. Just focus on how he fulfills his duty to God.
  8. It is not unusual for factions or cliques to form within a unit. It is almost unavoidable in a larger unit of 40 or 50 scouts.
  9. They can't be completely inflexible if they were willing to try it in the past. What motivated them to try it? What happened? Was there a problem? Was somebody injured? Did they have complaints? One thing about us old duffers is that we love to talk about the past. A friendly, non-confrontational conversation might reveal a lot about what they are thinking and what motivates their decisions.
  10. I understand your frustration and agree with you that this is not the best way to demonstrate leadership. It sounds like he needs to be more collaborative with his colleagues. I think you should try to understand that he is not breaking any rules. The COR actually does have that authority. He is accountable to the IH. So he does need, if asked, to provide an explanation to the IH. The IH is accountable to the Chartered Organization. The Chartered Organization owns the unit. I am wondering if this is his personal leadership style, or if this is the leadership style of the Chartered O
  11. Those would be the methods of last resort. It's sorta like expulsion from school. Expulsion is the last resort. You only expel a student after all else fails, or if the offense is so egregious that no other action will suffice.
  12. Troop 666? I think I will stay away from that troop.
  13. This is where an active CO can help. Maybe a friendly lunch between the two IH's could calm things down. When I started up my unit about 40 years ago, we had some similar feelings from some of the old-timer leaders. They didn't want a competing unit in town. The CO's didn't feel the same way. One CO is unlikely to tell another CO that they can't start their own scout unit. The CO's usually want to get along with each other. This is particularly true if the 2 CO's are churches, since pastors don't usually like to squabble with other pastors. Anyhow, the 2 IH's had a friendly lunch and
  14. After 5 pages of discussing movies that mention or portray Boy Scouts, we really shouldn't complain about being characterized as nerds.
  15. The Chartered Organization owns the unit. That's a fact.
  16. In my experience, when the Chartered Organization intervenes during the early stages of planning an activity, it is usually because it sees a conflict with another activity. This can be avoided by checking the master schedule in advance. If this is not the case, and the Chartered Organization actually objects to the activity, this is a failure of leadership. The unit leadership, both youth and adult, should already be aware of the CO's policies and practices, and should be doing their level best to conform to them. The Chartered Organization owns the unit.
  17. It is right. The CC, COR, and IH should all be given a copy of the unit's calendar of events as soon as it is available. You should make this a routine practice (from day one) when you start your new unit.
  18. Yes. Meet on a different night. Also, if the old unit has an established fundraiser activity, choose something different for your fundraiser. When starting a new troop, the leaders should make every effort to build a good relationship with the existing unit(s) in town. It is important to remember that your new unit will still be working with the old unit(s) at district and council events.
  19. I looked it up. There appears to be a brand of pressure cooker called Ninja Foodi that can crisp foods, including bacon.
  20. This article was from 3 years ago. Why bring it up now?
  21. Hopefully, they swim at the bottom of the waterfall.
