  1. Anyone that would say Uniform rule violations are truly petty stuff. Really is living in an ivory tower. Picture a small scout, his family living in poverty really loves scouting, but the one troop in his neighborhood has a rule that a Full Uniform must be worn at all meetings and BOR. This scouts has no recourse but to drop out of scouting. Pretty petty is it not! Just like the poster on this board that wants to make uniforms mandatory, cannot see the forest because of the trees.
  2. Weight is not an issue for me, I could gain 30 pounds and still be within the weight limit for Philmont. So for you knife is required guys. What would be the minimum size knife you would require?
  3. If you have a scout that is assigned as troop instructor and than have other people do the teaching, you have just told the entire troop that we do not care who selected as troop instructor, we are going to do it our way! But now if take this eagle and have him work with the troop instructor to help him prepare for the training, you are utilizing your resource's and not telling the instructor he is not needed.
  4. Seattle Pioneer Have you ever carried a 50 pound backpack over mountains? I felt the same way as you, until I carried a 50+ pound pack for 6 days over a few mountains. If I tried to carry an item for everything that might come up, my pack would weigh 300 pounds! Where should the line be drawn on be prepared vs overboard. Dug Last year was my first real backpacking trip, I used Philmont/Double Hs' guide on what to take, I took out lots of thing that they said where the minimum, and I still had lots stuff that never came out of the pack. We have 2 crews going this year one is doing
  5. I would have him helping teach the new boys. What would you have the troop instructors and troop guides do if a person without the POR is doing the POR for them? Would you count the POR for the real troop instructor?

  7. I never leave home without my wallet, and a place to place it, a pocket and a pair of feet coverings. Other than that, it depends where I am going and what I am doing. I just do not see how a pocketknife will make me any better prepared for Philmont. Last year I hiked through Double H ranch, my pack was at 56 pounds. This 50 year old ex?smoker could keep up with the scouts on the first part of the trip, but by the last couple of days, the mountains really got to me. My goal for Philmont is a pack under 40 pounds. I will not be carrying my wallet through Philmont. I was surprised that
  8. I want to know the rule and where it is found. Not sure why anybody would not, unless they do not want to follow the BSA program.
  9. Okay I guess I should have said. Every scout will bring a lighter, but I will also make sure they are carrying hurricane matches also. The hurricane matches will be for emergency only. Each member of the crew will carry waterproof matches to light the stoves. We have 11 people in the crew, 11 knives is overkill. Being prepared does not mean to over pack. I will also be carrying my little ELP camera and 7 rolls of film. The crew will have 2 sets of maps, the scouts not the scouter's will be carrying these.
  10. National Youth Leadership Training has a training session on how to use a GPS, but it is not only a session on how to use a GPS. Double H ranch has every crew use a GPS. Philmont can give you all of the way points for your camps. Maybe the BSA is already using GPS technology?
  11. DugNevius Reading your post here and on other boards, I had thought that you where involved in a rogue troop. I no longer think that. I think you are in a Borg troop. YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED.
  12. Why does it not amaze me that you would try to hold a scout to higher values than adults.
  13. Where was the SPL? Why was he not working with the PL and the SM? was? How come the SPL did not go over and rip the hot dog off of the stick and throw it in the fire? Not a patrol method troop?
  14. I knew I was missing something! I will be carrying 3 nalgen bottles. I will be wearing a hat. I will also have a emergency blanket. I will not carry a lighter, but I bet every scout will have one, so I do not need one. The hurricane matches are for an emergency. Much better than a lighter. I follow the scouts, they have the maps. I will not be carrying a knife, every scout will have one! If you use Philmont tents, you need to bring your own tent stakes. Plus stakes for the rain fly. This list is crew gear will be split up among the crew First aid kit Sunscreen tooth
  15. Not Much. I am going to Philmont this summer, I am planning on taking 1 pair of zip off pants 2 short sleeve shirts (one to sleep in) 1 pair of thermal long johns 1 rain suit 2 pair of sock liners 2 pair of wool socks 2 pair of underwear 1 compass 1 roll of TP 1 small bottle of aspirin toothbrush dental floss sierra cup spoon 3/4 length air mattress sleeping bag 8 tent stakes 1 fleece jacket Pair of sandals a few hurricane matches 12 of the little tea bags of coffee. mole skin My goal is to be under 40 pounds after crew gear. I have
  16. ASM? Lets put this the blame where it belongs, the Scoutmaster, followed by the CC, than the Advancement Chair. This scout has done nothing wrong!
  17. Pants and shorts are lightweight, fast drying. I have had the same pair of pants now for 9 years. they have held up well. I have even wore them on campouts. One pair of shorts I have, are 6 years old, no problem with them either. If you want to know what the worst part of the uniform is it is the socks, Yes I know they have new socks made with better material, but I have 5 pair of BSA socks already.
  18. Ed Did you read what you typed? Here it is my zero tolerance doesn't work It was a joke. I am really disappointed that a scouter could not come up with a better work than stupid. But I should not think that eveyones ethics are the same as mine.
  19. Ten 3.5 inch nails in his pocket. That is a lot of weight not to notice. There has to be more to this story than what is written. Wow Ed! your zero tolerance policy! Good to hear you got on the PC band wagon!
  20. "Burn'em Bash'em and Bury'em". I thought that is what we do to each other in this forum! Hey, Eamonn started it!
  21. What is boundary waters? A group of lake and rivers that boarder Minnesota and Canada. It is a beautiful unspoiled area. Go to www.ely.org for an idea. BSA also has a high adventure place there, I believe it is sommers.
  22. FScouter I guess I am dense. Why would a SM deny a SM conference? If a scout asks for a conference, should not the SM go ahead and have a conference, and explain to the scout why he is not ready for the BOR?
  23. The reason I asked was if he did not earn his eagle and it was because of the merit badge he earned but a eagle BOER denied him, he should contest the BOR. There are a few posters on this forum that can tell you how to contest the BOR if you wish to. One of my beefs with posters on this board, is that they will not tell the scouts, if they think that they have been unfairly judged at a BOR that there is a process that the scout can take, to make sure that all is on the up and up. The would rather leave the scout and parents in the dark and run the program as they see fit. Welcome to Bo
  24. Isn't a earring required with a Class C unifom?
